How do you kill a multimeter? Well it depends on the multimeter!

Great demonstration! I've seen lots os videos talking about input protection or the lack of it, but actually see it's effects is way better. Thank you for the video.

Thanks for the demonstration, it makes me change my mind, I gonna buy the Brymen 867/9. By the way, it's quite ironic you are killing an UNI-T DMM with an UNI-T equipment =D.

Each multimeter has threshold voltage and it is listed in manual. It is usually 1000Vdc and 600Vac. If you follow this limit, it won’t break.

brymen is top of the line meter and fluke competitors and UL listed cat iv certification, and cost 4 times more. Not a fair comparision. People buy 61e for electronik work for low voltages.

Hmmm, I posted this days before Dave posted anything about his tests. I am supposed to do nothing just in case Dave might do it too? I think not. I think you can ask Dave directly too and he will say even if I did post this after him that he would have no problem with it. He would encourage it as a matter of fact. And even if Dave was upset, too bad for him. It is my right to post what I want on youtube. If he doesn't want these things on his forums he can delete them but I know he never will.

The UT61E is fine. You would have NEVER fried it in real world use. I normally test voltages higher than most anyone else will be testing. 700VDC in Ampeg SVT tube amps. To imply that a static charge from a rug will fry it is complete bullshit. It is a 22000 count meter that will run off of 2.5 vdc supply, thus using all of a 9v battery. In over 20 years of testing high voltage circuits and mains panel voltages with numerous meters, I have never needed even 2500v protection. Go look at Mjlorton for a great review of the UT61E including it's inferior but still perfectly adequate input protection for a $50 meter. The BM869 is over 200 dollars which you also fail to mention. Like racing a new Cooper Mini against a new Ford GT500. Heavy mismatch. And realistically, once again, you would NEVER have fried the UT61E in real world use.

700v is not that much. A simple piezo igniter or a faulty ignition coil will probably fry the ut61e but the brymen probably survives that.

I have a UNI T UT 61E GS, made for German market and I can say that it is of much better quality than the one you showed. It has HRC input protection fuses, much beefier PTC and MOV-s , better shielding etc. All in all, a much better design, and scaled down to Cat III 300V.

I bought it in Germany a few years ago. You can also find it on German ebay. The price was about 80€, I think. Anyway, I've been using it for quite some time now and had zero issues with it. You cannot buy a better multimeter for that money.

I have to point out, that UT61E is a good 38€ meter for low voltage use. Comparing input protection against a 250€ meter is not really a fair "vs" comparison. For a mains voltage at Brymen price, I would just buy a Fluke 177 and keep UT61E for the counts.

Bullsh!t! It says 1000V CAT3 on the front, a very dangerous lie. If that meter is Cat 3/4 I am Elvis. Brymen are a quarter the price of Fluke in EU, and they DO meet their safety specs.

NoName Most sane people already know it's a lie because of the price. If you know the limitations(I set max 24V for chinese meters), it's good value for the money. It's obvious that you shouldn't touch HV with these cheap meters.

look at the ratings - ut61e - catIII-1000V (which is beyond a joke); brymen 869s is cat IV-1000V - and it should withstand 12kV transients.
@christopherjohnson4255
@christopherjohnson4255 8 жыл бұрын
Should go all the way up to 12,000 volts?? Why are you surprised it can make 5,000? cat IV circuits are rated at 1,000 volts. But can withstand 12,000 according to national instruments.. Here is the source. www.ni.com/white-paper/5019/en/
@lesnagy9538
@lesnagy9538 8 жыл бұрын
+christopher johnson I wouldn't say I was surprised. Yes, the CAT ratings call for quite a big energy hit at 12,000V. What it is still in dispute among many people is whether the meter needs to only not cause harm to the user, or still survive to function correctly.The UT61E would explode I think and so it fails both criteria outright. Actually the Digitek shown would also proabaly explode with a proepr CAT tests, but at least it won't die from walking around on a carpet and zapping the input by accident.
@christopherjohnson4255
@christopherjohnson4255 8 жыл бұрын
+Les Nagy a fair point. I am looking at the 869 as my first meter. so far I haven't found any that get as close to what it offers for that price. why would the testing say 1,000v when it can handle much more?
@LightAges
@LightAges 8 жыл бұрын
+christopher johnson What do you mean? A rating of CATIV/1000V has a specific meaning as mentioned. This means that you can use it on up to 1000V without any risk of damaging the meter, and that it will protect you as the user from spikes of 12000V.
@christopherjohnson4255
@christopherjohnson4255 8 жыл бұрын
+LightAges So if i am understanding you correctly up to from [1,000v,12,000v] range is can only handle transient voltage? Is this why is has a 10A shunt? What if I want to measure constant voltages around 10,000? Should I just use resistors to get it down to the safe 1,000V range and do the math of the resistors to see what the input is before resistance?
@lesnagy9538
@lesnagy9538 8 жыл бұрын
christopher johnson I am getting confused with what you are trying to ask. A 10A current measurement is unrelated to the maximum voltage rating. If you want to measure voltages higher than the rated use voltage of a multimeter, the safest way is with a high voltage probe.

Uni t ut61e is just great. What a nonsense you apply 2500 volt while uni t hasnt guaranteed you anything like that. It is more aqqurate than 10x priced flukes.
@LightAges
@LightAges 8 жыл бұрын
+TheRecocebo Actually they do promise it will withstand a few thousand volts when they rate it with CATIII/1000V and CATIV/600V. The tests to certify for those levels of CAT ratings use 8000V and 12000V. There are also the problems of environmental static electrical discharges, like when walking on a carpet. So you say it is more accurate than $500 Flukes? lol
@TheRecocebo
@TheRecocebo 8 жыл бұрын
LightAges ok flukes are durable I agree but in a video they compared it with fluke 87. The result was surprising. Uni t measured better then 87. How come. Find the video and come back to defend flukes.
@LightAges
@LightAges 8 жыл бұрын
+TheRecocebo Do a search on www.eevblog.com/forum about the UT61E and you will see varying opinions about it. Many people have had them fail without any apparent reason. Some have complained about accuracy drift. It would be hard to find the same complaints about a Fluke. You are making the claim that the UT61E is better than a Fluke, I don't need to prove anything.
