I've serviced electronics for 40 years, it is sad that the electronics parts industry has come to this, bogus fake parts from thieves, and it's only getting worse. Thanks for sharing, I always enjoy your videos.

I've been servicing electronics for about the same time as you have, and this industry of junk and counterfeit parts really makes me angry. I remember back to the 70s and 80s when there were no such things as chinese fakes. They only care about the money - they don't have a conscience.

Forty years ago there were no Chinese fakes but counterfeit parts existed. Well counterfeit marking where specifications were 'stretched' a little and manufacturers logos copied. I was not aware of complete fakes but there was no 'golden age' of honesty. It is out of hand now though.

I have a very old Kenwood 733 VHF/UHF radio. Suddenly it stopped transmitting on VHF, and after a little search on the net, I found that the module like this was the error. I managed to fix the crack in the circuit board, but after a while i failed again. Then i bought a cheap module from China, most probably fake, but I didn't want to pay maybe 100 Euro or more to fix an old radio, so I bought this cheap one. And I have to say it worked very well. I have used the radio for three or four years now, without any problems. So not every fake thing that comes from China is bad. Of course - if this was a new radio I wouldn't do it, but in an old radio it's no problem. 73 LB5JG

There are ways round this. The drive to the PA module is approximately 250 milliwatts at 50 ohms. This could be used to drive a linear amplifier like the microwave modules 144/100 LS switched to 1 watt input, you'll get 30 watts output. All you need to do is remove the module and just link the connections from the PCB corresponding to pins 1 & 5 together, check the alignment of the drive and pa tuning for maximum output on 145.000 MHz. In fact it actually works as a QRP radio without the linear amp, you'll need to hard switch the amp, easy with the 711 as it has a suitable socket available on the rear panel. Hope this helps.

Those beatup-looking Mitsubishi modules from China vendors are often not technically "fake", but they ARE pulled from old equipment. As such there is no guarantee that they were extracted from working units before they were removed. Disassembling scrapped equipment at the roadside to recover saleable parts is a cottage industry near Shenzhen. Soldering on new leads to make the module look new is often done by unskilled labor with little static protection. Even new Chinese devices that fail factory testing are often illegally diverted into the marketplace, instead of being destroyed as the manufacturer has ordered.

I was caught out by fake China supplied parts just last night but they were 48 pin QFN packages. It would be interesting to see a teardown/diagnosis of the Chineese module to see what they have done to "re-furbish" the unit. I may have a used module in my stocks if it would be of use to you. I am sure I have the 10 watt version but would have to look at what I have in the 25 watt. Karl

yeah really is getting quite sad. I don't mind the pulls that some chinese do that are at least noted as such and kinda help keep things that some people throw out still out there to help people... but sadly there is a growing market and its being filled with sadness... while I dont work with the hybrids, more tranditional dip package stuff it is truly amazing how often I find just random logic chips painted with other markings... sometimes cheaper versions of chips, but lately far to often completely non-functional chips.

@SirBeauJangles

Hi Peter, sorry this happened to your customer's rig - and to you. Is there no market in stripping good components out of used radios that have maybe been written off for some reason that doesn't involve such an expensive and hard to find part? A "breaker's yard" for recycled parts that can't be sourced from reliable suppliers any more? It's a principle used in many other spheres of operation, why not electronics? Alternatively - are parts like this one maybe also used in other very different devices? Maybe even with a different part number? Are there equivalence charts of such? Maybe these are silly questions! No matter, wishing you well into 2023!

0.5W is probably what is coming out of the driver transistor inside the module, so probably only the final transistor is bad. Is it possible to change the transistor in the module? Or another similar module? I believe they had a 711 model in Japan that put out 10W, maybe that module can be sourced. I see there are a good number of them on Ebay but all are in china. Its a great radio would be sad to see it in the junk pile because of this.

On the "replacement" part you can see the depression in the base metal plate made by the screw/washer that held the module down. Therefore it's likely that it was a genuine part - it's a pull, and a faulty one at that. The unscrupulous chinese trader who sold it to you doesn't give a shit - he's got your money, that's all they care about. If they sell a dozen parts and only two people ask for their money back, they're still winning. I would love to see these fraudsters shut down, but it's not going to happen. The best that we can do is refuse to buy their dodgy rubbish. I have seen a lot of pulls and fakes packaged in those little sealed bags with the yellow anti-stat labels on. They make you think it's a brand new part, when it's far from it. Would be interesting to pull the top off that one and see what's up with it. The fact that it looks like the top has already been removed before is an alarm bell right from the start. Anyway, greetings from New Zealand and 73 de ZL1SAR.
