A wonderful and beautiful video. Thank you very much. This problem occurred in my radio 7100. I disassembled the chip and cleaned it using electronics cleaner and it came back to work perfectly. The cause of the problem is dust collecting under (I think it is a sensor) at 6:44 Greetings to everyone from HZ1MW 73

With the protective plastic on the display, I guess that the defective encoder bypassed Icom's quality control testing. Nice repair and thank you Peter for starting my Saturday with an interesting repair.

I have heard that sometimes it is the little chip on the encoder itself that succumbs to ESD damage. I believe it’s simply a two-channel comparator. Keep that in mind if you ever don’t have a spare Icom encoder available. Great video as always!
@TRXLab8 ай бұрын
I know that.

Hi Peter, that looks exactly the same as the 7300 encoder, mine done same thing on my 7300, i tapped the knob and it started to work, then stopped again, i took the top bottom and front off the radio, and i tapped the back of the encoder hard with a screwdriver handle and it started to work again, and its been ok ever since and that was about 3 months ago, i think those encoders have a problem...Fred g4vvq Uk.

Well that was easy! I must say that encoder is bigger and more complex than I expected it to be. I've built several devices using Grigsby optical encoders, which are very nice military spec equipment. But these Icom encoders are much bigger and more expensive looking. Odd that an almost completely solid state device would fail though.

Hi Peter, thank you very much for your videos, they are helping me to remember my electronics knowledge. Could you please make a video about what is the minimun equipment that some one needs to start to fix electronic devices? Like iron solder, multimeter, etc. I am particularly interested in a radiocommunications tester, like the CMS50, but something cheaper, do you have any recommendation? In my case, is to repair my own transceivers (one ICOM 706 MKI, one FT-817 and one President Lincoln) Thank you very much!

Good that you had a spare, might have helped us folks by showing failure on a scope, then scope of the working one..this would also have allowed an explanation of how the encoder works… but as usual, nice video Peter.

There are older videos here on the channel where we show how it looks like on the scope..

Brilliant. Peter can you show how to test/check an encoder with a scope some time. EI6DP

I really wonder what happened to the original encoder? I am sure you opened it up and checked, I know I would. Can you share your findings here?
@TRXLab8 ай бұрын
No, we did not open it as we simply have no time for those investigations as exciting it would be...

Nice video Peter. A question for you and everyone having a 7100. I have a less than 2 year old 7100 that mostly work fine, but I have a fast build up of heat when transmitting on 2m and 70cm. In less than 3 minutes the temp reaches high and the radio reduces power output. The radio has always been like this. The swr are fine. Is this a symptom of something wrong or is it just the way they are?

Hi Peter, another great job and video. I am most interested in the rotary encoder and why it has failed, I wonder if there is a part number on the 8 pin SMD IC? As you say there is no information regarding this encoder, not to mention who who manufactured it. If you still have the old encoder could i purchase it from you as this is something I have been looking for one of my projects, I want to figure out how it works and how it switches the rotary detent in and out. Best regards, John M0XFX
@pasqualeiw0hex959 ай бұрын
Maybe you have right ! I think it's need to change SMD IC on encoder to fix it. 73 !
@TRXLab8 ай бұрын
Hi John, thanks for stepping by! I'm sorry we give defective parts back with the radio most times, so I don't have it any longer. On the SMD chip was a code and yes I do believe that it might have been the chip as there was no function at all. If it does work, partially, we would see something. 73 Peter

@@TRXLab Hi Peter, thanks for getting back to me. No problem on the encoder, I will see if I can get one from ICOM UK. Best regards, John

i always wondered how much you charge an hour for the repairs you are doing :). I did watch a lot of your videos and some of the repairs you did where quite complicated, given the amount of experience you have and the time you are investing it is hard to imagine that it is worth it from a commercial standpoint. So are you doing this just for fun, passion or just for friends?
