In this video we talk about the 257 Weatherby Magnum and how it stacks up to other quarter-bore cartridges and modern overbore cartridges. The 257 Weatherby is one of the flattest shooting cartridges to be produced and completely stacks up against other modern day cartridges. We also take a look at the 257 Weatherby Magnum and how it stacks up with high BC bullets when it is equipped with an appropriately twisted barrel.

I have been loading the 25s since the 1970s . 250 Savage , 257 Rob 25-06 & 257wby . Bullet manufacturers have neglected this caliber & only recently produced high bc bullets . For years I shot the Sierra 117gr spbt or the Speer 120gr spbt ( bc of .480) which is the highest bc 25cal Bullet that reliably stabilizes in a 1in10 twist . My current 257wby load is 120gr Speer spbt & a full case of Retumbo with a federal 215 primer & Hornady cases . Bullet seated out as far as the magazine will allow & feed reliably . Muzzle velocities are 3340 to 3350fps & .7 inch groups at 100yds . Lighting of a rifle cartridge with very manageable recoil . For hunting medium game to 450 or 500yrds what more do you need ? For elk I'd use a 120gr Nosler partition or a Barnes 115gr tsx or the ttsx 100gr . Cheers and good shooting

I've shot the 135 gr Berger Hybrid in my 1in10 twist 257 Weatherby. It only works because I'm shooting at high elevation. I can get up to 3300 FPS. The load that my rifle likes is only going 3150 FPS. I've shot it out to 800 yards. Also Weatherby makes the chamber with a lot of free bore. C.O.L for my 135 gr load is 3.525".

That sounds like an awesome load! Are you using a factory chamber?

@@stienfamilyoutdoors Everything is factory from it. Weatherby makes the chamber with a lot of free bore. I can't fit it in my magazine... but my load is 3.525" Again this only works because I'm shooting at 5100 feet and above.

Dang! That is a heck of a COAL for that round! But I bet you have nearly the full powder capacity to work with that way.

@@stienfamilyoutdoors I hit pressure well before I get close to filling the case. I've only used IMR 7828 SSC. Need to try other powders like H1000

@@ReloadingWeatherby makes sense! I have a few pounds of both N570 and Retumbo for my 28 Nosler I want to try if I take the plunge on a 257 project. Struggling now with deciding between a WBY or doing a wildcat based on the 7 or 300 PRC. Im not sure if I’d get enough velocity with a 6.5 PRC parent case to make it worth the effort. I’d like to be in the 3200-3400fps range with a 133+ grain bullet.

.257 Wby Mag was designed to kill, and it has killed a lot longer than the cartridges that you are comparing it to. Mouse to Blue Whale, a animal can only be dead not deader.

I don't know anything about reloading , so not sure this would even work. But , how about a 257-300 with a fast twist barrel and the high bc bullets? And / or with that set up. could you get reg. 257 performance with a shorter barrel?
