In this video I talk about the the crazy potential of the 257 Weatherby. The 257 Weatherby with a 1:8 twist rate barrel can shoot high b.c. bullets with impressive performance.

I have not been shooting for a very long time but I have been shooting long enough to notice one thing in common with all the weatherby guys. Everybody I've run into has been some of the nicest guys you could ever meet at the range. All very helpful and definitely all knowledgeable. When I get some knowledge under my belt I hope to be as nice of a guy as every weatherby fans have been to me. As for the 257, I know this was Roy's legacy round and what a beauty! Do you know why PO Ackley never improved it? Because he knew it would be SUPERFLUOUS to try! The closest thing I can think of comparing is the 6.5-284 Norma and Roy had an answer to that too and that was the 6.5-300W

I noticed the case room also with the 257. I also noticed with the 300 Bee that a compressed load with Hornady cases wasn't the case with Norma, there was still room in the case and the same I found with the 257. I had a Winchester rifle made in 257 Weatherby Magnum. It was a wonderful cartridge but I’m always looking for the next best thing. I didn’t want to spend the money on a Lazzeroni so I had mine rechambered to a 257 STW. It now runs an easy 200 ft./s plus faster than the Weatherby. It is absolutely astounding. But what is really amazing is that after almost 80 years we haven’t come that much farther than the 257 Weatherby Magnum in all that time. Good ol Roy was definitely ahead of his time

You know Reload between you and me....many of these guys are all "steaming hot $#its". Dont you find this to be true? Always looking for faster, better, farther instead of getting their arses out on the range practicing with the Weatherbys they have NOW. Weatherby rifles have killed thousands of game snimals all over the globe with few if any mods. Ok....I'll give you glass bedding and free floating the barrel. I can tell you what Ive seen all these years at the range I go to is hunters not practicing hunting shots they might encounter in the field. Rarely do I see a guy shoulder his rifle stand with legs parted and fire 2 shots as if he were still hunting and an elk ir deer breaks cover to put it in 5th gear. Instead I see the whole line of shooters on their asses, never get off the seat and continue to pummel the target. Then when finished, they all get together to BS how accurate their rifles are, never taking them off the bags or cradle. Unreal.

@@rebelbaron7003 I agree with your comment about people becoming better shooters that’s something that everyone should strive to become. But if the general shooting public was not looking for bigger faster and more powerful then Weatherby would not have introduced cartridges like the 30-378, the 338-378 and 6.5-300 trying to keep up with and or ahead of the competition. As long as there is a cartridge and a rifle to shoot it people will always be trying to make it bigger faster and more powerful!

I have been advocating that Weatherby updates the 257, 270 and 7mm Wby rounds to a 1 in 8 twist and have even asked Weatherby to consider it. I'm not sure they will do it even though it should work fine, my guess is that one day they will come out with 257, 270 and 7mm RPM rounds that will come with fast twists right from the factory. Case capacity would be pretty close to the belted versions as well. I believe a 308 RPM will be the next one out, time will tell.

How is recoil vs 6.5cm and how does it do in wind. Bucking the wind is more important to me than elevation. Recoil just hunting is different than target shooting, wanting repeatable results on follow up shots. Some also, like me, are busted up and high recoil is something not conductive to the hours and days after a long shooting session. Just my humble opinion.

More recoil than a 6.5 Creedmoor. This is all hypothetical, most people wouldn't do target shooting with a 257 Weatherby because of how short the barrel life is.

@@ReloadingWeatherby I have a tendency to load hot. My 140gr ELDM is 2837 fps average and 130gr Gamechanger with a different powder and different magnum primer runs 3038 fps. 5 shot averages here. 147gr ELDM is 2780 fps. Out to 600yards hunting I use the 130 Gamechanger. Especially at close ranges. The 140gr ELDM gets the nod past 600 yards. Target shooting I use the 140gr ELDM. We shoot to 1000 yards regularly 1200 less and 1500 even less. I shoot 308 Winchester 175gr SMK targeting also. I use a Tikka superlite in .243 Winchester and 80gr ttsx @3400 fps and 100 grain Hornady at 2900 give or take for walk hunting because of its weight. In my area .243 is a very versatile little pill. With a good common cup and core 100 gr I've taken whitetail at 425 yards give or take. In heavy brush I like my .308 but have had no issues when I used the 243 and good 100 gr bullets and chose my shots wisely. Given everything has its limits and weather conditions are a big factor, beside terrain on longer shots for me. My buddy and I practice rain, wind or shine. I will not lie here. The little 6.5 creed has throughly impressed me. I have owned 17 Remington, 204, 22ppc, 22-250, 243, 25-06, 7mm-08, 7mm mag., 30-30, 35, 300 Savage, 308, 30-06, 300 Winchester magnum, (what my buddy shoots) and 300 ultra mag. The title was so preposterous I just had to watch the video. @gerry6.8 - good luck getting Weatherby to update their line. Anachronism is sort of the brand identity at this point. Their RPM lineup represents a somewhat modest attempt, at best, to move away from double radius shoulders and belted cases. They're getting passed right on by in the high power center fire game by folks like Hornady, Norma, and Nosler (7 PRC, 28 Nosler, .300 PRC, .300 and .338 Norma, to name a few). At the end of the day, 1000 yd and further competition has been thriving for decades and the Weatherby is nowhere to be found - that really says it all.

@@adamshaw8214 If you believe that any cartridge or calibre is bad, then you simply choose to be ignorant of the concept of trade offs, every tool has it's use and nothing is perfect. Just because 30 cal is versatile doesn't mean it replaces all other calibers.
