Make sure your action screws are torqued right. As someone that’s been shooting the .257 for over 40 years, here is a tip for ya. She likes to be hot. When your getting over 3500 with the 100gr, your getting to where she likes to be. Also, do yourself a favor. Drive down the interstate and visit Barnes and pick you up some 100gr TTSX. Use em for everything from speed goat to elk without hesitation. Just remember, Roy didn’t design anything to go slow.

Just my opinion. Move your front shooting bag further back closer to the front action screw. You might have to raise the rear bag or rest position up slightly to see the target. With that bag being so close to the end of the stock, I think it’s causing excessive harmonics that are inconsistent. And try to put it back to exactly the same position every time. This may not work for you, but it’s what I would try

That's exactly what it looks like. I'd grind the screw down or even better would be to glass bed the stock and raise the action slightly in the stock so the barrel is definitely free floating. Good call.

This is only the second video I've watched. I did leave a comment earlier about bullet seating. For powder charge this is what I do to find the best SD and EP. Let's say you want to achieve 3,200fps see what your book says will be just below that and up to that. Now pick the lower one say it is XX.00 gr of powder. Load 4 rounds for each group and keep the bullet the same seating depth. Then load the next at XX.2 then .4 then .6 then .8 then XY. Use your chronograph for every shot and record the results. You will find say XX.4 and XX.6 have nearly the same spread and deviation so I would load at XX.5 knowing if I'm up a bit or down a bit the results are the same and most accurate velocities I can get. I then pick that best average charge and seat my bullet where it will feed well in the rifle. Shoot 4 round groups again, load the first where you want to start and then seat the second 4 a distance of .003 back from the first, then next 4 rounds .006 from the first and then next .009 from the first and maybe one more group back another .003. You will then find the groups will open and then close up and open again. The tight group is your seating node. This process worked well on my Weatherby mark v 243 super varmint master and other rifles. I'm going to be working on my 300 Weatherby soon as I get some time and new brass. Also if it is warm out let the barrel cool down between shots, takes longer but you get better results at least that has been my experience.

As long as other commenters are doling out advice, here's mine: focus on your follow-through. Keep that trigger pulled until well after the rifle barks. Looks like you're very concerned with getting your finger off the trigger as fast as possible.

I tried both 115 Grain Ballistic Tips and 110 Grain Accubonds and the Accubonds shot a great group with 70.5 grains of 7828ssc. Also shot my first deer with it this year and the terminal performance of the Accubonds on a whitetail was pretty impressive. Good luck finding a load because I’ve had a hard time changing to a different gun this season.

The 257 Weatherby is a wonderful high performance cartridge you are not to shoot too much because of barrel wear. Find a good load and save it for hunting. I hear H1000 powder is good . The 117gr. Sierra has been my benchmark bullet for 25-06. May work in the 257 Weatherby. Clean that barrel and polish it up with JB bore paste.

Try adjusting the seating depth, weatherby free bore is .357” but it can make a difference, also make sure your action screws are tightened to spec. All my 257 weatherby rifles shoot best at very close to max, and the slower powders like h1000, r-22, even retumbo. Good luck..

I worked up a load years ago for my .257 Weatherby's, all MK V's, not a Vanguard, with 100gr Barnes ttsx bullets and IMR 7828ssc powder. Just start with 70grs and work your load up until you reach 3600fps. I think you'll be under 1moa. My rifles and two of my hunting buddies rifles love that load and we've shot antelope, deer, wildebeeste, zebra, heartebeast, impala and more with that load!

I shot a buck with my vanguard 257 on monday.I was using 117 sst with about 58 grs of IMR 4350. Nosler book tells me this should be around 3060 at the muzzle, I did not verify that,howerver prior to hunting at the range this load did group excellent out of this gun.I read so many horror stories on the sst blowing up I wanted to be under 3200 to avoid this issue.Monday a nice buck stepped out of some thicket only about 40 yards from me.I took the shot right at his heart.You know I thought I shot a BB gun,I never felt any recoil, I did at the range but again the recoil was very mild. Weatherby's like heat, I always load at near max, or max loads. My Vanguard 2 absolutely loves a max load of 75.5gr of H 1000, Barnes 100gr TTSX, 3.160 oal at 3525fps, with the Federal 215 LRM match primers. Be sure to buy a Lee factory crimp die and use it on all loadings. There's a lot of powder that needs to be burned in ANY Weatherby cartridge and this was told to me by a Barnes bullet reloading tech and a Weatherby factory tech. The crimp doesn't have to be 'heavy', maybe about medium works best for me. Of course, start a few grains under max load and work up checking for pressure signs . This load is absolute money in my .257 Wby and will put 3 shots in a dime at 100yds! I also have a reliable load for the 110 gr Hornady ELDX, and the Berger 115gr ELD Hunter bullet, I don't recall the loads for the Berger or Hornady bullets but I could look them up, kind of irrelevant when the put up against the Barnes TTSX. ANY other bullet is what I call a 'dust bullet' when comparing to the integrity of Barnes!!

If anything remove the stock, and see if you can bed the recoil lug. I’m pretty sure that barrel isn’t floated. I would torque the action screws as well. Maybe just pick a good powder, and then just start shooting groups only adjusting the seating depth. Changing only one thing at a time.

Afterall mama always told me I had a face for radio. I've enjoyed some of our brief exchanges. I'm getting ready to build a new rifle or buy one then modify. To finish when I shot the buck he did not even flinch,he ran into the laurel and I actually thought it was a complete miss.I followed the buck and there was no blood trail anywhere, I went about fifty yards and saw the buck ahead of me another 30 yards. The bullet did enter and exit the deer where I shot and the insides were a mess, still the deer did not bleed.This was a quick clean kill however I still don't know how to evaluate the whole event. I am going to try interlocks and nosler bt and see what preformance these bullets have. I will say the whole event was alot of fun, cheers.

I had the same issues with my groups. What I found with all my weatherby vanguards is bullet seating depth. I have one in 7mm08 another in 257 and another in 6.5-300. All have to be seated a few thousands longer than book. After I started adjusting to a longer seating depth groups shrank to 1” or less.

Two things to consider with both rifles: 1) accurization from a gunsmith or such and 2) Checking the torque specs on your action screws at minimum. The rifles will become more inherently accurate as copper is deposited in the barrel. I'd say give it more rounds, check the torque specs of those action screws and watch the groups shrink. Think about it this way: if everything is out of spec, lets say 2 mm (going by turns of a driver or tolerances) all over the entire gun, that's a lot!! NIB guns from the best manufacturers will have those issues. They shouldn't, but they do!!
@ReloadingWeatherby

Very true about the torque specs. With my 300 WBY the more I've shot it the better it groups.

This dude is just a reloader slapping some components together to make a gun go boom!! First video he talks about taking advantage of weatherbys freebore to gain velocity then he loads at factory length well what the hell was he worried about the extra free bore for then!! I would say it’s safe to say he don’t have any idea what the hell he’s talking about. The same video he mentions weatherby lowering pressures with extra head space well this is wrong too headspace is a sammi dimension all manufactures have to follow and excessive head space would cause case head separations so wrong again pal!! Now let’s get into that nasty trigger jerk you got going on in this video. How do you expect to get groups under half inch when your jerking that trigger like it’s your pecker!! I even saw a few shots where he closed his eye before the gun went off have to look close but it’s there!! You have a lot to learn and a long ways to go to become an actual hand loader instead of a reloader slapping shit together there is a huge difference between the two and it’s easy to tell which you are!!
@ReloadingWeatherby
@ReloadingWeatherby Жыл бұрын
You seem worked up, you okay? First.. I'm just getting started with this rifle. Since this video I've been loading up bullets seated farther out than SAMMI. Second I accidentally said head space instead of freebore or longer throat. Sometimes I mix my words up while making videos. Lastly...I was jerking the trigger. Never claimed to be a marksman on my channel. I'm always looking to improve my shooting. This video at the range certainly shows some glaring issues I still have. Despite my lack of fundamentals I have gotten every cartridge I've loaded for to shoot sub MOA and a few of them to shoot under .5 MOA.
