Here is my tip. Make sure to wash your sealing ring every time to help eliminate smells. Then put the sealing ring in the freezer. The freezer also helps with the smells but also keeps the ring from getting too stretched out. Something to go along with this is keep one ring for savory dishes and one for sweet dishes.

TY for this tip. I want to make yogurt but heard the rings can hold odors and affect yogurt specifically. I’ll eventually get another ring.

Lisa, another important tip is to check the well around the liner that the lid sits in for any food particles or stray grains of rice that could prohibit the sealing ring from being properly seated. Sometimes that can cause pressure to escape and the pot won't come to pressure. Rice is most frequent offender here. I also wanted to mention that I take the 3qt on camping trips, I scramble eggs on saute for breakfast, boil water for coffee, make oatmeal for breakkie on saute, dump pasta/meatballs for lunch. I bought a small carrying case and I'm rolling to hotels, KOAs (Kampers of America chain of campgrounds) and tents. Last thing. Don't be afraid to teach your older kids how to use IP. I told my now 13 and 15 year olds that that's one and only appliance I'm giving them when they go to college or getting married. They already know how to cook basic stuff and most importantly aren't afraid of the pot. You did a GREAT job on the video. You are my favorite IP personality.

I'm new to Instant Pot myself, and I actually learned about the lid and side handle from a fellow commenter in one of the 1st videos I watched, maybe, I'm not sure. It could even have been a review I read on Amazon before deciding which pot I was going to get, so I knew about it before my pot was even delivered! Lol

I never knew you could proof bread dough in the IP! I'm definitely trying that next time I make bread. The steam function is perfect for cooking corn on the cob: 1 cup water, steam for 6 minutes, then quick release the pressure. It's perfectly cooked every time.

I saw that too when I got my first pot back in 2018! I opened mine up and when I tried that found that my lid had no tabs and my handles had no slots because I bought a Lux. That's when I learned that there were different models of the IP! My 3-qt. Duo and 8-qt. Duo do have the tabs and the slots but by the time I got them I got used to not having them so I still don't do that when I could!

I’ve had an Instant Pot for 2 years and thought I was a fool for buying it. I thought I’d end up getting rid of it. I finally decided to dedicate the time & energy into figuring it out, and your videos have been SO helpful!! I’m getting so many ideas for how I’ll be using it. Wrote down almost all of these tips for future reference. Thank you!!

Another tip, I recommend purchasing extra seals, pressure release valve, and pins. I use colored seals so I know that my red one is used for poultry, blue is veggies/starchy foods, green is for things like egg puffs/hard boiled eggs/etc, and then the white/clear is for fish/seafood which I rarely make because I can’t stand anything fish and the only seafoods we eat are shrimp, crab legs, and lobster tails. If you use just separate seals you lower your risk of possible cross contamination and giving your family/friends food poisoning. You also eliminate the possibility of ruining food due to cooking something like fish/chili/etc and then cooking a cake or yogurt and it having the flavor of your previous cook release from the seal. Every time you heat that seal up and then it cools it’s inevitable that some of whatever you cook will seal into the seal and then it will release into your next cook. Especially if you cook something with like strong curry. That seal is kind of like your plastic Tupperware and you have certain containers that you only store anything that has spaghetti sauce because you can’t get that spaghetti stain out of the container especially if your family member goofs and heats the leftover spaghetti sauce in that Tupperware straight from the fridge as the heat just sets the sauce into the plastic. Hope that makes sense.

On releasing the steam, instead of using your fingers and being too close to that hot steam, use a wooden spoon to rock it from sealing to venting. You still can maintain control and change it back if you should need to, but it's much less scary to change it from a foot away. 🙂

I just got my Instant Pot Air Duo for Xmas and was so excited! I quickly read the not-so-great directions that came with it AAAAAND... of course, the first time I used it... ALL went AWRY! I tried to cook a whole chicken (rather too ambitious for first use!) BUUUUT....I left the vent open while cooking, didn't deglaze, lots of beeping, button pushing, foot stomping, cursing, then cried to Husband, made him order pizza and threw the Pot into the cupboard never to use again! THEN a few days later, I stumbled upon your videos. The first video I watched was your Dos and Don'ts - BRILLIANT! I think I did most of your Don'ts on my first go-round - Wish I had seen your videos prior! (I agree with others below about keeping the music off and your technique is perfectly succinct!) Seeing these tips and tricks is going to help me LOVE my Pot! I immediately bookmarked your website ❤️ I have now taken my Pot out of storage, profusely apologized to it and we have vowed to become best friends! Thank you so very much for sharing!!!

My tip has to do with recipes that have you pressure cook your protein for x number of minutes, then do a quick release, remove the lid, then add your veggies, and then put the lid back on and pressure cook for a few minutes more. I seemed to always have a problem getting the lid back on and turning it to the lock position. I did some research and found that it was because the lid and sealing ring are still so hot. If you take the lid to the sink and run some cold water on the inside of your lid (then dump it out), it will cool your lid down so you can put it back on and turn it to locking easily.

I just had this problem! I cooked one batch of something & then wanted to immediately cook another batch. It was fine until the steam started coming out of the sides. I ran cool water on the lid (and gasket) and it was fine after that. Do you know How long you have to wait for it to cool down? I left mine in the sink for 15 min.

Great video, thank you! Some more tips... Purchase another metal inner pot so you can have two. I use one for carbs (rice or pasta) and the other for meat and veggies. That way, the rice doesn't scorch on the bottom of the Instant Pot when cooking and you can pull out one pot to work on another. I store my second one upside-down on top of my Instant Pot and it fits nicely. If you don't have the silicone top, I just use a large round dinner plate as a cover. I sometimes just cover it, let it cool, and then put it in the fridge to portion out later on if I just wanted to go to bed and mess with it later.

You don't have to use your fingers to open the steam release valve. Use tongs or a wooden spoon. Also, you could wear an oven glove or mitt, if you're worried about the steam.

+1 to the handle of a wooden spoon for release - it wedges in there perfectly and you can control how much steam escapes how quickly by sliding the handle. Spot on Susan Triangle.

I just got my Instant Pot today and watched one of your "don't" videos. Guess I should watch some tips for beginners too! Thanks. Wow! I have a Duo and just made some boiled eggs - I couldn't wait to do SOMETHING with it! I was looking around for place to put the lid because I have extremely limited space. Oh my goodness, the more I watch, the more excited i get. I'll be binge-watching your videos and going after recipes at your website. You just made a new best friend!

Great tips. I never thought about double boiling. I use the steam function to reheat food in the instant pot. This is really good for delicate foods like pasta. Use a cup of water in the pot and a trivet. Put your leftovers in a heatproof container, add a little water or oil so the food does not stick to the container, and cover with aluminum foil so condensation does not get into the food. You will have to experiment with steam time, but you can start with 5 minutes for pasta or rice dishes. Natural release and check food. You can always add m1-2 minutes more steam time if needed. Vegetables may take only 2-3 min.

I've had my IP for a while now and always appreciate learning new tips for using it. I'll have to watch the video again and this time write down the tips that surprised me the most. Like the fact you can delay cooking! And adjust the Sauté feature! I liked the background music in your video and the camera loves you. Thank you for doing this. I am reccommending your 101 video to my FaceBook Instant Pot group.

I studied the IP for months before buying... but the 35 year old microwave died, then the crock pot died 3 weeks after. I announced to my husband that the time for an upgrade had arrived. And now i am an ipot head and I love it so much! I even bot one for each of two friends as a xmas gift. I use my Ultra every day. Next up, tempering chocolate!
