Wow. Rambo meets Mora. This knife is a winner for sure. This knife was obviously inspired by Mora with the polypropylene molded handle and Scandi style grind plus the poly sheath with mounted ferro rod. The survival kit was well done with useful items. For Bushcraft work including light batoning, this is a good choice and reasonably priced. Thanks for showing this knife. Cold Steel has produced a keeper here. Regards Larry

Good video. My son has one of these and I have a number of Cold Steel knives and they all impress me. There are two reasons for the high polish on the blade. You can use it to reflect the sun to signal, and the better the polish on stainless steel the better the corrosion resistance under conditions like salt water. Your throwing skills have improved!

I caught the orange one on some type of Amazon Prime discount a few years back, and got them for 8 bucks each, without the goodies in the handle. No problem, got 4 of them, have given a couple as gifts, have one in my get home bag and one in the gun safe with the other 80 or so knives I consider 'just in case'. I have a LOT of Cold Steel products, including 3 machetes I use daily in my job as a land surveying crew chief. Great review, very comprehensive, and yes, they are razor sharp right out of the box.

I'm sorry but I can't see this as a good idea: 1. You get a false sense of security thinking it is strong. 2. You lost the storage feature which is the reason for buying it in the first place. A comparatively priced full tang knife would actually be better
@imbadwrench
@imbadwrench Жыл бұрын
the amount of storage lost was minimal. I could feel the blade moving in the handle doing simple tasks. tasks that a mora would do without a problem. the epoxy made the difference between this going in the bag with my pellet rifle or in the drawer with my old rambo knife.

I appreciate the out of the box reviews. I watch reviews to see the quality of the product and the reviewers initial impressions. If the edge needs to be touched up I can do that. If the blade needs a complete reprofiling, that is something different. I keep some tender in the handle. Keep doing what you're doing. Thanks.

I bought this months ago on your recommendation and totally impressed how well it's held up. It's not going to replace my bk-9, but it's not supposed to. Added a mini tube of krazy glue, med and water tabs, some fire cotton and waxed matches, and wrapped the sheath in paracord. It's so light and cheap, you can throw it in a bag, glove box and forget about it until you're stuck. Thanks for doing these hollow knife reviews without any of the "I'd never use a knife that isn't full tang." nonsense. The light duty, cheap tool you have on hand is a hell of a lot more useful than the perfect one ya didn't bring that day.

Much better than expected, batoning with it without breaking it in half, as well as sticking it, really shows that handle is no joke. I like hollow handled survival knives, not for batoning wood! Lol, but they are great as that 1 thing on your belt you could bug out with then fish, cut some cordage, start a fire and SURVIVE! Cold Steel are always razor sharp out of the box.

Nice review. There are a lot of knife snobs who will never give this knife even a basic look. This knife should not be your main camp knife, however it definitely makes a great backup knife with some great survival attributes. As you demonstrated it's sharp out of the box, light weight and a capable survival tool at a reasonable price point. Overall durability is pretty good if its not overly abused. It makes a good option for a day pack, as a backup camp knife, and for boating, kayaking and fishing. The small survival kit that is included is actually decent. Overall I have been pleased with mine.

@@Ballista762 A Morakniv Companion and a Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Hatchet. This combo works well for me rather than a large heavy duty camp knife. For a couple of reasons, the Mora works good for my basic food prep and miscellaneous needs and I prefer the hatchet for any wood harvesting needs. I have also found that some people are put off by a large knife, but don't pay much notice to the smaller knife on my belt or the hatchet that is usually attached to my sling bag when camping or on day hikes. As a backup I also carry a Kershaw flipper which is part of my EDC.

I would highly caution you about recommending this knife. Like you, I am a Scoutmaster and Cold Steel enthusiast. I bought this knife almost a year ago and showed it to the boys as a cheaper alternative. Much to my chagrin, it developed a problem with the short tang starting to pop through the handle with only semi light batoning. If you'd like a picture, let me know.

Good to know! While I do believe this knife it tougher than a Mora, I do think you should probably treat it as you would a Mora (ie - avoid all but the most extra light batoning). If you really like the hollow handle, the CS Bushman are pretty cheap and tough :)

I like cold steel knives I just wish Lynn Thompson what do something about the Tang to strengthen it. When I was at Fort Bragg Fayetteville area a friend of mine own a knife shop on Bragg Boulevard. Gave me a big discount. Rambo 2 it just came out everybody was buying those knives. And those Rambo knives were expensive. I guess myself I'd still take a mora knife in the back pack any day of the week. One good thing we know a lot more now than we did then. Great video Brian, don't let the haters get you down. I bought a $2.00 Walmart Mora knock off because I didn't want to lose my Mora on a canoe trip if gear got dumped, it was really sharp, did well on the trip but just because it was sharp didn't make it good. I always sharpen my knives after use and I still have that knife and carry it in my gear to loan out if someone forgot their Mora, yea it's a POS but it works 2 years later, so sharp doesn't mean its good, or that it will hold an edge, but this $2.00 knife did, but it's like the old joke about riding a moped, it'll get you there, but you wouldn't want a friend see you riding one, this Billybay ? knife works but I always carry my Mora now, and not that I think about it that seems wrong, I guess I shouldn't be worried about name brand stuff if it works, and most of the knives I have are from overseas anyway.

I have a couple survival edge knives. For what they can do they are awesome. And they don't hardly weight anything. The steel is pretty good, and they are easy to sharpen. The 5" blade is just big enough to baton with, and still small enough that I wouldn't mind dressing and butchering a deer with it. A lot of survival knives I've bought over the years are a lot heavier than this, and really aren't any more capable.

Even Cold Steel’s cheapest beats Harbor Freight. But all knives of this type, even the Jimmy Lile custom that Stallone used in First Blood, trade away the strength of full tang or even full length tang. I have owned hollow handle knives. But I’d rather take along something like my old Cold Steel SRK, and carry the survival trinkets separately. Great review, though.

If you want a truly well made hollow handled knife you should consider the old Chris Reeve knives. Since they quit making them they are hard to find and command ridiculous prices (proving many folks have more dollars than sense). Another high dollar high quality hollow handle knife was/is made by Randall Knives.

So a Chris Reece, if you can find one, will set you back well over a grand. And the Randall is still in their catalog at around $500 or so.

Survival On Purpose $1,000! I didn’t know they had gotten that high, that is a really stupid price. I can’t believe people are paying that. I paid $250 for mine many years ago. They are high quality knives that can take anything. But, as I said in my 2nd comment for $30 these Cold Steel knives seem to be the Moras of the hollow handle style - good serviceable blades.

I like that knife I did buy one years ago and put it in my pack and left it there I didn’t know it came with a ceramic rod. That’s cool! I have to dbl check mine to make sure before I bet on it. And I messaged you on FB about those 2ways I wanted to know if the ones on Amazon are still the same as yours

Thank you for introducing me to this Cold Steel product. Certainly as many pros as cons. For $28-$30 I couldn’t resist and purchased one off the link you provided. Like a good inexpensive Mora - why not own one. But, not selling my 25 year old Chris Reeve hollow handle knife just yet. 😀 Good review Bryan.

Survival On Purpose I have the Ubejane. I also had the Special Project that Chris agreed to cut down to a 6” blade and a Shadow IV, both of which I sold long before he stopped production on these hollow handled knives. All were fantastic, but the Ubejane fits my needs more than the others - it is similar (if only in my mind) to a Nessmuk pattern knife. I added an orange plastic heat shrink coating to the handle as the bare steel got a little cold in very chilly weather. I have had no problems with this coating.

You are correct this is a much better knife. Schrade makes the best hollow handle survival knife(s) I have seen they are one piece handle and blade of good quality steel funny thing is they always come with a screw driver bit set in the handle I guess you could take it out and replace it though. I would be surprised if you had not reviewed one of these in the past I have seen several reviews just can’t remember if one was from you. Great vid this looks like a value knife worth checking out.

Not as big as some of the other rambo knives. Has quite a bit of stuff in it that would come in handy. No saw on it. Cuts wood pretty well. Feril rod better than matches lasts a long time. Good balance. Could be larger though. However good knife.
