I take an in-depth look at the 27 or 6.8 caliber. Specifically, I compare the 270 WInchester, the 270 Winchester Short Magnum, and the 270 Weatherby. But I also talk about the 6.8 SPC, the 6.8 Western, the 27 Nosler, and the 277 Sig Fury.

If you check the specs on the Browning X-Bolt Speed LR and the X-Bolt Hell's Canyon Max LR, you'll notice that you not only get the 7 1/2 twist instead of 10 but you also get a 26" barrel on both versions, as opposed to the standard 24" of other .270 Winchesters. Yet another game changer for the .270 Winchester.

Very nice comparison of 3 excellent hunting cartridges. As an old dog, I've seen many cartridges come and go. But I feel that the ones that stay around the longest and remain popular have to tick a lot of boxes. In the game getting calibers, shootability is so important. Because of its moderate recoil the 270 Winchester is very shootable and with 150 Partitions can be a "do all" cartridge. I love them all but, 98 years of popularity says something special about the 270 Win. For those who want to stretch the old girl out a bit, Browning now offers a 7 1/2 twist barrel for those heavy for caliber bullets that are being introduced. The 160 Partition sounds very interesting.

In 1989 while I was younger on my 2nd Moose hunt with my family. I was armed with my Ranger 30-30WCF backed by the 170gr Nosler Partition accuracy load developed by myself assisted by my grandfather while he was loading 50 150gr Nosler Partition for his M70 in 270WCF for our Holitna hunt. We set up camp then headed out to the field then set out piles of rock salt at known ranges. I called out, a group of extremely large cows came out to the 75yd salt pile and then 10 mins later a big monster Bull came out to the 50yd salt pile. My grandfather took aim then i heard a crack, the big bull took off with its harem and i was puzzled why they damn cheering he missed big time! I looked to my left and saw this large bull with dinky antlers clean headshot @90 paces. I asked why didn't you shoot the one with the 9 tines? He said those 6 cows will produce its offspring and he is tired of tough meat he perfers these over the big monsters😂

There’s several cartridges that interest me a great deal. I handload, but I can’t rationalize marriage to a cartridge that can’t easily be found in factory form just about everywhere. The other issue I have is that I generally hunt whitetails primarily, in areas where shot opportunities are not all that long…think 200 yards and under with the vast majority of shots being well under 100 yards. I have no use for the magnums. Most of my game killing and handloading has been with the .270 Winchester and the .243 Winchester, and in the areas I hunt, they’re terrific.

Choice Ammunition usually has a great selection of 6.8 Western. They are sold out of 4 of 6 different types, but they just emailed me back that they’ll be receiving more brass here soon. So they should be in stock once more. Pendleton Ammunition has 6.8 Western as well with 4 different loadings. Both these companies hand load the ammo they sell. Very good quality

🤔 When I compare cartridges now, I have started comparing them in Velocities with what I like to hunt with - which is more "Temperature Stable Powders" (H4350, H4831SC, and H1000)! Of course, published data is not always available for every cartridge doing this, but I find it valuable information in my evaluation of them! Also, I do have more thoughts on the caliber in "General", but can't give them today because I am expecting "out of town" guests to come stay with me and need to do some house cleaning before they arrive! Anyway, other than that spc cartridge (which I personally have no use for), I think that any of the available choices would be great! 👍

🕵️‍♂️ My favorite powder is H4831SC, including for the 270 Winchester! So, when we compare the 270 Winchester to the 270 wsm, which cartridge is more "efficient" using it? Note that it is also listed (in the Nosler Manual) as the most accurate powder in the 270 wsm, for the 150 grain bullets! Your thoughts? 🥳

The first 270 or 6.8 was the 6.8x57 in 1907. It’s not very clear if the Chinese developed the cartridge or the cartridge was developed at the Mauser factory. The Chinese had their test trials in 1907 and ordered the rifles in 1908 from the Mauser factory. To my knowledge, China was the only country to use this cartridge. Also, by the 1930’s, China had switch to the 8mm Mauser. This information was out of the book, Military Mausers of the World.

Don't forget the 270 Titus - been around, what, maybe 3-4 decades? Just a 7-08 necked down to .277 or a 260 Rem necked up. Sweet round and very accurate AND you can use Lapua brass.
@leifhoklin2681
@leifhoklin2681 Жыл бұрын
Already forgot it. Why would I want that when I can get more performance out of the ‘06 case, and just as easily load it down if I want a lighter woods round. I have no problem getting accuracy out of the .270 Winchester. Hell, even my pre-64 model 70 (original; no free floating) will shoot 130 grain SSTs over a full charge of IMR 4831 to the .8s with boring regularity.

Well then the same rationale should apply to the 308 v 30-06, 280 Rem v 7-08, 6.5-06 v 260 rem
@leifhoklin2681
@leifhoklin2681 11 ай бұрын
No, it shouldn’t. The .308 was a problem solving cartridge developed by the military. It duplicates the ballistics of .30-06 m2 ball in a more compact profile with a case head that played nice with belt fed machine guns. Hunters didn’t initially like it because it didn’t do anything the .30-06 couldn’t do better. They came around because the rifle manufacturers stopped chambering the very popular .300 Savage and began chambering the .308 instead. The .280 Remington tried to be a better .270 and failed because Remington chambered the .280 in pumps and automatics at low velocity with the wrong bullet weight. It’s a dead cartridge for all practical purposes. 7mm-08 was created to solve a problem…it was to be a lower recoiling high-power target cartridge. It succeeded and it caught on with hunters because it takes all the game you would with a .308 with a flatter trajectory and less recoil. The 6.5-06 technically gets a free pass since it’s still a wildcat, but it has a purpose….25-06/.270 like speed and flat trajectory coupled with high BC bullets to maintain that speed across wide valleys or open plains. The .260 has the same purpose as the 7mm-08 and I can think of several cartridges (including the 6.5-06) that should have been legitimized far before the .260 Remington. The .277 Titus will always be a wildcat because it’s a solution in search of a problem. It does nothing a .260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, or 7mm-08 can’t do. The difference in recoil between those cartridges is negligible. The only application would be hunting because…get real…nobody is shooting .277 bore in dedicated target rifles. Also, the .277 bore diameter is just not that popular when compared to the .308s, .284s, and .264s. There is no value in adding .277 to the .308 cartridge class because there’s a ton of legitimate and commercially popular cartridges available that do the same things. No reason for it other that to have something different.
@derekmcmurry
@derekmcmurry 11 ай бұрын
@@leifhoklin2681 Yes it should. The 277 Titus is not and never was a solution in search of a problem. It was designed primarily for competition to see how it would perform, then transitioned to a handy short action hunting rifle. Like the other short brother cals, it uses less powder to get the same job done inside of what most would agree is within reasonable hunting distances but you had a short action. Like many cartridges, it never took off commercially. We can agree to disagree

Why get buried in ballistic tables. 100 or 2 hundred velocity difference is only academic in real hunting. 270 can take care of everything in North America, use right bullets and put them in right places. I seen a guy shoot mulie buck 4 times and it continued to run, found it after a long search. If you can't kill your game with 270, you should practice and brush up your shooting skills, end of story!

I have a 270 win that my dad used for deer hunting before me, and I took it over when he passed away. I still have the original speer 150gr bullets and the load data him and his good friend decided was the best for whitetail deer hunting with that gun. I to this day have never seen a deer do anything other than drop on the spot when hit by it! I have used a lot of different calibers and weights of bullets and I can say for certain it has the best knock down of any of my deer hunting calibers. 338LPM is a bit overboard for any Edible Game, it's best use is in Modern WarFare Weaponry, giving Snipers and Long Range Cover Operations a break from the super heavy and bulky 50BMG rounds and The Big but also bulky Barret Tactical Long Range Rifles, but providing the Same Range and guaranteed Lethality against high ranking Terrorists who are always surrounded by 2miles of either Blockades, Security, Constantly Perimeter Checked with Technicals, Surrounded by Close BodyGuards Indoors and Outdoors, Hiding, Disguised, Hopped up on Speed, Painkillers, whatever else, and Cowardly Tweaker stuff... like picking up children at the slightest feeling of danger or threat knowing Smart NATO Military Snipers either won't shoot or are Order Not to Shoot in those situations, or they COULD be Court Marshalled. Now I've never Shot a .50BMG so I might be wrong here, but im trying to make an Educated *guess* that maybe 50cal might not be as Flat Shooting because of the "overpowering" pressure as 338LPM? And maybe accurate follow-ups are why Tier 1 or 2 Special Forces Squadrons have the CHOICE between 50cal Barrets or 338LPM Rifles, which I believe Barret makes a 338LPM that looks the same as their classic 50, and maybe there's a conversion kit for them they can carry? I'm guessing again that 50BMG can penetrate armor or some reinforced hiding spots at a further distance then 338LPM. But both are top dogs and 50BMG is probly very accurate which is why it's the most used lol but 338 would be good for Polar Bears or Large Adrenaline pumping Aggressive Large South American and African Predators

It’s a good rifle and I’ve taken plenty of deer and hogs. But I’ve never been impressed with its power like the 270 WBY. 270 WSM is well suited for backpacking elk hunts. Building a short action for the task I took a 300 WSM and 270 WSM take off barrel to the bench rest with a hacksaw. Shooting for speed testing my goal was to shorten barrel 1” at a time with factory ammo and when a 100 fps was lost the test was done. Ended with the 270 (my first .270 ever) having a 22” barrel. 5.5 pound work horse. 300 WSM was more recoil and in the field was not as flat shooting by a long ways. Magazine only holds two rounds, more than ever needed on any of my kills.

Love the idea and practicality of the 270wsm its small but it can do great with the copper bullets that need just a little more speed to open well so you can really reach out there and get get great performance out of a smaller weight copper bullet like a barns ttsx. I would trust it past 500 yards on a elk, seen great results at 400 threw a set of ribs then exit threw a shoulder on a elk with only a 130gr barns. and i got good grouping with a 150gr accubond interested in trying to see if my gun will fit the 165gr but if I need that i would just use my 7remmag

I've posted before, shall do again: 270 Winchester, once fired WW brass, Fed210M primer, full case Superformance powder, 130 Barnes TTSX, 3380fps 24" barrel, 1/2" or better in 5 rifles. I just looked at the Barnes website loads for 6.8 Western. Their data for the 150 grain bullets are all under 3000fps. I'm getting 3010fps with 150 Berger VLD in 3 different 270 Win rifles all 24" barrel. I'm considering a 270-7PRC reamer. Yes, 7PRC necked down to 277.

@@hopefulballistics Not sure. I have no experience with the 6.8 but can review available load data. Nosler's fps, in my experience, is always (ALWAYS) inflated. Barnes is pretty spot on. But when you are getting nearly 3400fps with a 130 Barnes TTSX in a regular 270 I have to really ponder the utility of any form of 270 mag that are currently available. I would never consider a Weatherby version simply because ol Roy felt like his ammo should not be priced less that $25,000 per round - embellishing I know but really, that factory ammo is beyond ridiculous. Looking at case capacities with available cartridges in the forms of 270 mags, I'm just not feeling fuzzy about them. Also, I'm getting nearly 3505fps with the 110 Barnes TTSX So 2 reamers/rifles are in my future, well one reamer already exists but I want a rifle in both: 1. 270-7PRC 2. 30-7PRC (already exists, just waiting on my Terminus Zeus QC long action). Other cartridges may “beat” it in terms of speed and competition-level accuracy, but in a hunting rig, the .270 Winchester is the winner. In terms of terminal performance it is satisfactory (Dave Petzal said 150 grain bullets from a .270 Win killed just as well as 180 grain bullets from a 300 Win Mag), and it can work just fine in a trim rifle with a 22” barrel. If that rifle is a Mauser-style controlled-round feed (Winchester M70 or Ruger M77/Hawkeye) it feeds remarkably smoothly. It is a rifle hunter’s dream!

@hopefulballistics Right?! I was seriously considering getting a stainless Model 70 in 6.8 but it seems to be a non event. If they (Winchester and Browning) ever pull their heads out and do a proper decent marketing push raising the popularity enough... I'd revisit the idea. But not now with the lack of rifles and ammo in that caliber. What's the story with that anyway? It's a good cartridge. Did the other rifle and ammo manufacturers freeze them out to kill off the 6.8 as a competitor? If so, it really must be a good cartridge to cause such a reaction. Fear it would be too good of a competitor against their product? Maybe. Just spitballin'.

With 7828 and some other powders , the 270 Weatherby out runs the Winchester by 300 fps.

.284 inch is when converted will be 7.21 mm when we called 7mm bullets. Same way .277 bullets if we convert into mm it will be 7 mm though we call it 6.8 mm which is approx .270 inch

Always compare weatherby cartridges with weatherby data

It is senseless to compare one powder against another in different cartridges. Also, Nosler does. It do any updates or just to Weatherby Cartridges. Interesting they do not show either RL 26 or MRP. Are the primers and brass the same. Was the WSM using Nickle Cases vs Norma Bass in the Weatherby. Also, different barrel mfgs and reamers. The reason for my points. I make the Universal Receivers as well as the pressure and velocity barrels. The data is pointless unless they are publishing their working pressures.

I loved my😢270 in tikka s/s but had to sell it cause would not penetrate fully grown bull head or sholder. If there is sutch athing as a FMJ then I'd only have 270 for ever. Flat n ft shooting. 😢

all the good 6.8's get awful releases. 6.8 spc ll, and the 6.8 western. 6.8 spc ll might be the best hunting chambering for an AR, but with the confusion over the name and the fact that no one with a rifle chambered in 6.8 spc can shoot it, its dead in the water. 6.8 western. how do you not have lapua or norma roll out brass for this release, or at least get federal or tikka on board? hell just show up at ranges with a 6 lb rifle in 6.8 western and 7 prc? which do you want to put 20 rounds down range off your pack in practice..
