I built this 270w DIY CFL Grow Light for just $52, and I've made a little tutorial video to show you how to build it yourself.
The parts list:
Old bathroom Cabinet = Free
6 x E27 (edison screw) light sockets = $6
A Survival Blanket = Free
One junction Box = Leftover/free, but otherwise about $1
Electrical Cable = Leftover/free but otherwise about $3
Electrical Tape = $0.10
6 x 45w, 5500k CFL Grow Lights = $7.30 Each
You can also see the 96w DIY LED Grow Light I built here: • 96w DIY LED Grow Light...

WOW. This is great. A lot of light box tutorials look like electrical fire hazards. I plan to use 6 SHO 101W bulb that are 2700K. (over a 150 gal fish tank) I have a can of mirror spray paint so that will provide reflection. This tutorial is just what I needed to build it safely. Thanks.

OK Wow, that will definitely make a good grow space. 5 rows of 6 lights, evenly spaced. I would plan to switch from the internal individual led drivers, to an external driver. I'm doing a video on this shortly, its a bunch of soldering but well worth it. If you surface mount them like I have, you should be fine with passive cooling. I hope you take lots of pictures.

Outstanding tutorial. The only thing I would do different here, would be to mix those CFLs. 6400K and 2700K are better ranges IMO. For most plants, it's a 2:1 (6400K:2700K) ratio for vegging, which is reversed for flowering/fruiting.

I will definitely do a comparison soon. The intensity of the LED's is WAAAAY better, but the coverage is much less. I think watt for watt I would go with an LED setup, but its also about twice as expensive.

I love the LED's - their light intensity is awesome. But I'm re-building them because the LED drivers in the cheap bulbs I bought keep failing, so in the meantime I need another grow light, and I enjoy building things even if I don't need them. :-)

I think the only drawback of the LED's is that they are very directional, whereas the CFL's light a larger area. Also watt for watt the CFL's are a lot cheaper if that is a consideration. I think V3 of the LED grow light will be about 220watts.

Matt white paint is prolly better than foil. It actually has a higher albido than Aluminium foil does. If you use foil, don't use the shiny side. Aluminium is aluminium. Both sides reflect the same amount of light, but the shiny side reflects it less evenly. I've looked everywhere for a suplier of the hammertone sheet used in all normal growlights/floodlights, etc, but so far, I've only found people who supply it by the ton. Matt white paint is probably the best way to go.

How much grow space do you think you'll have? I think 16-20 LED bulbs would cover a 1m x 1m space with even lighting. then again, I wouldn't use less than this 270w CFL light for the same area.

@jjbobby830 10 жыл бұрын
i hate to break it to you, but this is not a 270w light. when using cfls to grow, you are concerned with the actual wattage of the bulbs, not the "equivalent to" wattage.
@rbmusic9292
@rbmusic9292 9 жыл бұрын
Actually 45W is the actual output per CFL. The equivalent is over 100W per CFL. (I know 23W CFL gives 100W) So 6 times 45W equals 270W with an equivalent of over 600W.
@ThatDamnPandaKai
@ThatDamnPandaKai 9 жыл бұрын
RR B That's not how it works. He's using 270 watts in total, but he's still only getting the brightness of 27W(100wEq), he's just got it focused onto a larger coverage area so the lumen depreciation occurs at a further distance
@rbmusic9292
@rbmusic9292 9 жыл бұрын
So you can't sum the wattages? My lamp got four 20W with 100W Output CFL and two 18W T5 lamps. The 20W Lamps are 1300 lumen and the T5 lamps are 1250 lumen. What's my total wattage and lumens? Btw thanks for correcting me!
@ThatDamnPandaKai
@ThatDamnPandaKai 9 жыл бұрын
RR B You can for power consumption, not brightness. You can be using four 20W (80) but if the bulb's lumen rating is say.. 1200, and you have a single 40W with an lumen output of 2400, the single 40 will give more light output than the four 20s. In my aeroponic system I run two 400wEq CFLs only because I want the total lumens to be as even as I can get it across my grow-tub. If I only had one right in the middle, only the middle plants would get the full 6500 lumens, and the outter plants would get significantly less- depending on how much light you lose. So imagine if you have a room, you have 1 light in the middle that isn't very bright. It won't light up much of the room. But if you add more lights, more of the room with light up, but it still is going to be the same brightness, the light will just be able to illuminate further from the source. TL;DR: you're total watt for power consumption would be 116watts, but you're maxing out at 1300 lumens in total(assuming the lights are all focused in one spot). It won't be as bright as a true 116watt Fluorescent bulb

Princess Lemmy "That's not how it works." - When calculating light needs for your plants, a general rule of thumb is to supply at least 2000lumens per sq.ft.. With CFLs youre dealing with a problem of low light intensity (penetration) leading to airy bud, so for CFL I would be happier with 3000-5000Lm/sq.ft. as well as placing the lights ~6" from the plant keeping in mind that distance spreads lumens dramatically. optimally you want about 50watts of 70Lpw (Lumen per watt) or higher cfl per sq.ft. of canopy. Your 1x 40watt cfl output ~2600lumens (65Lpw) = Adequate lighting for 1 sq.ft. Lowes 1x 26watt cfl output ~1800lumens (69Lpw) *4 = 7200, placed every 6 inches would give 3600lm/sq.ft.. so basically assuming Lpw are the same it allows you to spread light more evenly over your canopy (or between plants) as well as use different spectrum lights dispersed throughout. other than that there's no difference. Additionally, that many CFLs do create a good amount of heat so a convection vented cab or tent is a huge help, optionally add an exhaust fan for peace of mind. If youre wondering what makes HPS so much better, it's that Lpw number. A 600Watt HPS can put out 96000Lm (or more) making it 160Lpw!!! This light is usually used for a 4'x4' or 5'x5' area meaning it would deliver 6000Lm/sq.ft. or 3840Lm/sq.ft. respectively. TL/DR? More Power(Watts) = More(Brighter) Light. Also, HPS can be more than twice as efficient as CFL.

your logic on 5500k being a good in between spectrum is flawed. while i am not a "spectrum is important" guy i would like to point out the proper way to do both is to use a 10k spectrum bulb if you don't want to swap between 2 spectrums. so you double it to include both not half it to get somewhere in the middle. next time if you unsure don't say anything because wrong info looks worse than missing info in an otherwise nice project. fyi none of this is that straight forward in reality either. it is a balance of lumens/watt efficiency of the range vs benefit or penalty for said spectrum. par values will vary for same wattage of different color spectrums. this si mostly why red for flowering makes ppl think it is the spectrum and while minimally it can have it's effects most of the ones observed are because 2700k bulbs of the same wattage have a higher par rating than the cooler spectrums of same wattage. it's because of this the 10k bulbs are less efficient thasn even the 65000 ones which are less efficient than the 2700k ones. bottom line is par/lumens over spectrum
