Haolonggood has a magical way of knowing what’s missing from the market, and supplying it even before we knew it was missing. Such is the case again with today’s offering, the hadrosaurid Tlatolophus. An important dinosaur that helped to define the hadrosaurs tribe Parasaurolophini, this is a dinosaur that is pleasantly rather complete.
Haolonggood renders this dinosaur as they usually do, which is to say with good sculpting and really nice paint applications. They are ever improving, and still able to give us affordable models. This is one new and recent hadrosaur that should please most dinosaur lovers (except for certain anatomical misses)

@@isislima8995maybe you don't know many collecta figures... Look at collecta deluxe iguanodon, a figure that you can find for 16 euro here in Europe. Sculpt is stunning. Many collecta figures lacks in painting but sculpt it s really good. And even prices. I like many haolongood figures but also collecta has its great figures at a really cheap price.

It's nice to see another ornithopod from them after some time, and a recently described genus that's been pretty much ignored until now (other then Ancestors but those aren't mass produced).

Do you know of anyone who actually received their Ancestors in hand? But yet, ornithopods are a long-neglected group. I've long hoped for a nice Tenontosaurus, and I'm still waiting after a decade.

@@DinosDragons Honestly I have no idea. I just knew of them from other folks on the Dinotoyforum, but haven't paid much attention to them myself. Also regarding Tenontosaurus, you may be in luck if the upcoming Wild Past kickstarter can succeed. It is intended to be one of the stretch goals (alongside others like Chasmosaurus, Rapetosaurus, Scelidosaurus, Maiasaura, Plateosaurus, and a few more).

Great review as always, I love that haolonggood worked on such a recent species. I think I recall hearing that when you commission a factory to make your figures, you have to agree on a certain palette of colors from the beginning, resulting in repeating color schemes amongst figures. Each additional color you add to the palette also brings with it higher fees from the factory. You can see repeating patterns amongst safari, collecta, and pnso figures as well. So it’s possible that under their current arrangement theres a limited number of colors to choose from
@DinosDragons

Thank you for the information! Yes I have heard same. But I just wish that they could come up with less similar patterns at least, even with similar colours. I would tend to be more forgiving of HLG though, since they are selling these models to us so affordably!

Still unaccustomed to a hadrosaur without cheek tissue. The more derived hadrosaurs evolved the most advanced method for processing plant material of any organism yet known. I am perplexed why would an animal possess such an effective method of eating plants while lacking tissue to keep their meals from dropping to the ground below.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 7 ай бұрын
The main issue lies in what tissue would actually form the cheeks as often depicted. In mammals, the cheeks are formed by the buccinator muscles, which seem to have evolved partially to aid in sucking. Reptiles don't have cheeks as such. So for such a soft tissue to exist, there has to be something else that forms it. However in reptiles, such a structure could only have evolved from a convoluted and inprobably amount of differentiation as well as reorientation of the available muscles in the reptilian oral area. Therefore the most parsimonious assumption would be that reptiles and by extension dinosaurs, were more likely not to have cheeks than to have them. Nabavizadeh proposed a 'pseudocheek' formed from the mAMES ( _musculus adductor mandibulae externus superficialis_ ) , which nevertheless still won't span the jaw the way ornithischian cheeks have traditionally been depicted. I talk more about this in my PNSO Iguanodon (video 170) review.

An excellent and thoughtful review, as always. I'm fond of my hadrosaurs too (not to mention my ceratopsians and sauropods!), so I'm thrilled by Haolonggood's choice here. I completely agree with you that the stark white squiggly stripes are overdone by Haolonggood on several of their models. If they were softer in tone and better blended in, it would present a much better effect. We have a saying, "Less is more"! I'm not too concerned about the repeating colour palette. I had assumed it was a practical production consideration, and it gives the brand's output a certain homogeneity and cohesion, so it's not all bad. When all is said and done, for me this year Haolonggood has been far and away the most exciting of my dinosaur firms, and they have given me hours of pleasure. I ordered both the Tlatolophus variants. And I'm deciding which of the Alamosaurus variants to order - I like them both, so I'm taking my time.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment as always Elizabeth. Yes, quite a few viewers have expressed they are ok with similar colour palettes considering practical considerations of paint, and if that helps keep HLG affordable for all, then I'm completely ok with that compromise! As you say also, HLG has really stepped up to the plate filling in the non-theropod deficiency created by PNSO, and offered several genera I've long wanted, including a decent Pentaceratops! So I am very grateful for that too. As for the Alamosaurus, when I saw the polling images, the blackish *A* was a no-brainer. However the sale pictures tell a different colour, with a lot less subtlety. But with *B* they used a very similar picture, and that one shows more complexity. So I'm inclined to go with B. *C* is too bland for my tastes!

I really want a good Edmontosaurus too! the Wild Safari is nice but the proportions are off. Tlatolophus is relatively new! Described only in 2021. It's surprising how many animals with good fossils don't actually make it to mainstream. For example, I've wondered why no one does a Spiclypeus or, until recently, Zuul.

Well from what I can tell, the actual for sale version A is a much poorer, less complex than the polling images HLG used. If it had been the same quality, it would have been a no-brainer. Well, well, what do we have here? When I saw the news about this new hadrosaur, I wondered which company would step up and give us the toy figure. I never thought it was going to be Haolonggood. This figure looks so beautiful and well crafted. But as I said in that Baryonyx video, it seems like Haolonggood is in a hurry and trying to catch up to its rival companies (I shouldn't say rival, so I'll say other toy figure companies). Dear Haolonggood, we would love to welcome new and obscure species to our collections. But please make them scientifically accurate; there is no need to hurry and ruin the model. I'm seriously dissatisfied with the color schemes in this green one. It looks so pale and pinkish in some areas. And of course, I'm not going to comment on that short face (premaxilla). I think it's time for Haolonggood to change its color schemes and patterns. And those front limbs look so skinny, it looks like this Tlatolophus is having a hard time walking with its huge body. That's why they say, Never skip the leg day 😉. Either way, I think I like the brown version more. And I hope Haolonggood will take some time to rearrange their color patterns and accuracy. And I'm so excited to see that Alamosaurus. Thank you so much, as always, my dear sir. You are the best.🖤

Hey good to see you again! And yes, there was a time when CollectA was the first boy on the block with any new dinosaur, and in a sense, out of the usual suspects they still are. But that was before the rise of the Chinese companies who offer figures all year round now, and so they can be a lot more responsive to dicoveries. Well, the general form of the arm is actually very thin; you can see the skeletals of some are practically spindly! But with regards to the premaxilla, it's really quite shocking as I think even a layman would have seen something not quite right. I wonder what kind of accident led to that happening. In my case, I actually do prefer the green, but the poverty of detail compared to the brown suggests it's just a moulding issue and maybe I ws unlucky. And then I have heard that HLG may actually try to change up the colour pattern going into next year, which is amazing because the interaction they have with the fans is more than I have seen in other companies!

It's nice to see them do a new yet underrepresented dinosaur, but I have to say I'm not a huge fan of it The detailing is very smooth and fine. Which would usually be fine and a good thing. But the paint job is also so... washed out? Everything feels like it was just spray painted on from a distance. It ends up looking cheap imo. I think this one could have really benefited from a darker wash or dry brushing, to add sharpness to it.

So, I noticed the foreshortened upper “bill” in the thumbnail of your review before even watching it. I think it’s easily fixable with a bit of creative sculpt work. My biggest problem with HLG figures is the rote paint jobs. The base colors aren’t bad given some of the better blending they’ve been doing but….excuse me….BUT…the continued out of context addition of white hashes and splotchings have more in common with graffiti or a Pollock painting. They can begin leaving out Step #3. I get that’s an opinion and I’ll own it. But, please. Stop with the white “accents”. Having said that, I like this figure. A lot. It’s another step HLG has taken towards bringing affordable and well designed figures to the market place. I will be ordering one. It will fall victim to my paint brush. Also going to preorder their upcoming Alamosaurus. It looks pretty good-stated as a 1/35 figure but I think it might exist on the “smaller” end of that scale. We’ll see. It’s still exciting and under $100! Fingers crossed. Thanks again for a no punches pulled review.

Thank you for your kind words! I try to pull no punches, as sugarcoating everything would make it useless to viewers. Some of you are paying a LOT for these models and deserve all the information you can get, good and negative. I am surprised the length of the skull wasn't caught. I am guessing even people who have no knowledge of anatomy would instinctively feel something looks odd. Good for you if you know how to do your own modding. I'm SOL as I have zero clue about sculpting or painting! Lol Pollock painting is an apt description for some of the splotches. With this one I can imagine with a lot of imagination that they were going for a bit of a dappled look, but being so random just cheapens the whole effect. I believe you are right. That Alamo is definitely not scaled down to 1:35 from the typical larger sizes quotes for Alamo. But if the inhand sculpt is as good or almost as good as PNSO's, just its larger size is going to be very welcome indeed for most sauropod lovers!
@thomasmonroe7947
@thomasmonroe7947 7 ай бұрын
It looks close but, yeah, maybe a little small. However, won’t know until it’s actually in hand. One thing I did notice on Lana Time’s site was a reference photo of a limited edition SOLID figure which, I’m wondering if that might imply HLG will be doing lighter hollow or partially hollow vinyl. The price, before shipping is pretty outstanding. So, all things considered, I will be placing my preorder to get one with the stand and pterosaurs. Even if it is too small, it will fit in as a smaller individual or get referenced as a smaller animal of the same Claude. I’m a pirate and can do things like that🙂 I believe there are 3 or 4 more sauropods planned by HLG and, if I saw correctly, they will be moving up in scale with a couple of larger specimens. Exciting stuff. Good day to you.@@DinosDragons
