I get a sort of satisfaction watching a skilled tradesman like you bring back an old string instrument to its glory days.

What a fantastic job, everything I hoped for and more. The break angle on the strings over the new bridge is amazing, what a transformation. The tuning key popped off the first day I had the guitar, I was so disappointed. I pushed it back on with a dab of suprglue! Your fix is so much better, it only waited about 30 years for you to do the job properly. I can’t thank you enough for your thorough master craftsmanship.and addressing all the issues the guitar threw at you. Seeing you clean the guitar was so helpful, I guess I have always been worried about applying a cleaner and wax but what a great job. .it was a mission getting the guitar from the UK to your workshop but it was 100% worth it. I Really enjoy your videos! I am a musician (Guitar and Bass) and have been for 55 years. 40 years ago I was blessed to make a good friend (Luthier) and I was able to watch him minute by minute while he built his guitars, both acoustic and electric. He schooled me thru building myself a six string electric Guitar and a four string electric Bass which I still play to this day. My friend was as much a perfectionist as you are and you make me feel as though I'm right there with him. He passed 10 years ago and I miss him a lot. I'm glad I found your channel and wish you well. I'll be watching!

Jerry, I was stunned by your story at the end. I have a photo of my best friend at 3pm and he was killed in a car accident at 2am the next morning. That was in October of 1975 and I still miss George to this day. Thanks !

I am a recent viewer and really like watching you fix guitars. Noting the tuners on this Gibson I think I have seen them before on a Gibson Melody Maker I had back in about 1967/8/9 time frame. They too were junk!

I'm planning my retirement. Not the financial end of things, but what I'm gonna do. It will mostly involve some learning to build guitars, and delving into fixing 'em. Got some jigs rigged, and some tools. What has made for a steep learning curve for me is taking old guitars from the local thrift shop, trying to make a learning experience, taking them apart where necessary and seeing how they tick. Seeing how to remove a back or a bridge. In the background, I'm making a dreadnought from scratch! Thanks Jerry, what you have left for posterity is an unrivaled gold mine. Mark

Jerry, thanks so much for the tip on using the other end of the calipers. I had no idea this could be done. Especially with the the SM calipers that have to readjusted to measure depth. Great time saver and just easier.

I know some people just dont look at the big picture when it comes to reparing guitars. It's one thing for someone to sit behind a computer and play armchair luthier and it's another to actually do the work. In some cases it's just not worth the amount of work it would take in order to take a guitar apart. Plus it's always a risk when doing that, that something could crop up that makes it even worse. You just never know. You do exceptional work and always do what's right in your heart. The people that think you should be doing something different really are in no position to be making any statements. It's really difficult to say what should be done without even seeing the guitar up close and in person. I believe you have proven time and time again that if you feel it's not in the guitars best interest or in the customer's best interest, to take a guitar apart then that is good sound advice from someone who knows his craft and it would be sound advice to follow. Anyway, I love watching your video's, you definitely do great work.

“Just replace”, “just”; what I love about Jerry’s work is the precision and thought he put in his job, what I’ve learned from this video is that sometimes you just gotta replace something and sometimes you got to keep something authentic and functional. What a great craftsman!

I had a guy not sso long ago who's tuners were doing the same and instead of replacing them he asked me to solder the one that was seperating. It worked, there was still loads of play but the back didn't keep pinging off. Your uploads have become a reference point in times of difficulty, you really are the master. Thanks Jerry.

Everyone is an expert instrument builder, Jerry. Very fine work, as always.

That fingerboard is actually much better looking when you clean and sand it off like that. Comes closer to matching that nice bridge you made. And to be honest, I like the look of the grain much better than the dark, almost one color look it had before. Kind of like the ebony that you're starting to see more of with the streaks and colors in it. I much prefer that to the solid black look. Great work putting that neck back on. Carbon paper is a pretty useful material once you realize it doesn't have to just be used for copying things. It's my tool of choice for things like violin bass bars as well as neck joints. You can get a MUCH tighter fit with it. ETA: After seeing your fret wire bender, I made one of my own. It's not as well done as yours, but it sure does the job, and I had all the materials already, so it didn't cost me an additional thing. VERY useful tool. Thanks for that idea! ETA: That is a lovely song, I'm sorry you didn't do the last verse, I'd have loved to hear it. What a sad story. At least they got to hear a good show before she died. I hate it when people lose loved ones in such a useless manner.

Those scars on the back look like possible belt buckle damage. Could be that guy from the Geico commercials with the ever bigger buckles. I fixed a tuner key pretty much the same way you did. It's held for years.

It was a challenge, Mr. Rosa, but you came out with flying colors as usual. By the way. I have a set of Gibson Deluxe Tuners just like like the ones you've been having some strife with on that guitar. There's actually (from what I gather) three different makes of Gibson Deluxe tuners; the ones on that guitar are made by Schaller Elektronik in Germany. The other two makes are Grover and Kluson, which is the original manufacturer. The play you encountered with those tuners is due to either or both plastic washers being either missing or perished. When I bought mine, there was one of them which had some play and after examining it, replaced the missing washer and thus eliminated all the play. A note for future reference: to remove the cover, place it on a small machine vise with the "wings" sitting on either jaw (don't tighten the vise to hold it). Then tap the two bradded lugs gently with a small screwdriver. The cover should pop off. Then replace any missing or damaged washers. Cheers Mr. Rosa.
