Thanks man! Very happy to hear it. If you'd like, you can enter your collection for a review (all videos beginning with #R are reviews, and you can get of idea from them) and possibly win a watch. (Check out Video #A2 for details.) Also, you can vote in the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (See Video #A1 if you get your vote in before November 10-- --two days after that other election.) Please include your suggestions for anything else you'd like to see/discuss on Watch ArtSci. Kindest regards, Bill

i am surprised this is the first time vulcain has been featured in your channel. when i see someone's got a cricket or a doxa's sub, i consider them as a serious collector. those two brands are sort of my standard when it comes to serious watch collecting.

Great video as always as always Bill. Zenith and Seiko are my favorites so far. Tag 1887 movement is basically a hidden Seiko to my knowledge www.europastar.com/magazine/highlights/1004071591-tag-heuer-addresses-the-1887-movement-controversy.html Now, you are right about Omegas with Co-axial movement. They are absolutely great in precision and reliability. I believe more manufacturers will be adopting it moving forward..

Hi Amintas! Zenith and Seiko seem to have been doing a lot of things right for a long time. TAG Heuer, on the other hand, as been all over the map from its early days as Heuer to a slew of low-horology watches to the climb up to higher horology. Check out this article from Calibre11: www.calibre11.com/tag-heuer-movements/ (Note: I disagree with the author's conclusion that ETA and in-house movements are equal; but I y I think I'd rather have a Tag Heuer with a Zenith El Primero than an TAG in-house!) What do you think should come up in next week's final 5 of the top 10 under $5k? Great hearing from you! Bill

Very nice article Bill! Well for the next week maybe a GP or an IWC Portofino would be nice ;)
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Amintas! All of the suggested watches had in-house movement, and while GP and IWC have in-house movements; their watches that do are higher than $5,000 new. IWC has a lot of ETA types of movements. For example, their IW3265-01 is based on an ETA 2892-A2, and their in-house movements tend to be over $5k. Maybe I missed some GPs, which I like a lot!! Check them out and let me know. Kindest regards, Bill

Hi TheWatchAficionado! I felt the same way--here's this cool watch that presidents wore, and I hadn't seen it until recently. Then I found it was one of the finalist in the Petite Aquilie of the Grand Prix. The Cricket was an early wristwatch with an alarm, and the President Cricket is an update of the classic. Glad to hear you liked it. Kindest regards, Bill

Hey Bill, This video was made before I came upon your channel. I hope you will entertain my question. Just when I thought I understood what "high horology" is, you identified these three as being in that category. Is it the relationship with GPHG that puts a watch in high horology? You've said many times that Rolex has never entered, and you list Rolex as strong horology. Yet, Tudor has won and you say it's high horology? Finally, if the 5 watches you have here are high horology for making the short list (or winning), if a different watch (of that brand) has the same movement, is that watch also high horology? I am a beginner, I hope this is an intelligent question. Thanks.
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 6 жыл бұрын
Hey RP, just because a watch company enters and/or wins a Grand Prix prize does not make it high horology. Neither Eberhart (which won the Sports Watch Prize in 2016) nor Tudor are high horology. Eberhart is Standard Horology and Tudor is Strong Horology once it teamed up with Breitling to make its own in-house movement (which Breitling claimed in-house as well). Take a look at the videos on the tiers and the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie's criteria for 'Fine watchmaking' to get a better idea. Kindest regards, Bill

Hey Mr. Sanders, good video. I have owned a Zenith El Primero for sometime and I have complemented it with an Elite Dual Time, so you can say that I am a brand fan. Anyway, El Primero is indeed a classic; however, Zenith has received some criticism for not updating the movement (I am not talking about adding modules as in the case of the Captain). For instance, why Zenith hasn't added a hacking mechanism? You would think that El Primero's high beat rate and column wheel mechanism could only benefit from precise time setting. In my opinion, Zenith needs to make sure this great movement doesn't become a dinosaur.
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Luis--excellent points. Let's see if we can find out why Zenith hasn't upgraded it--besides the financial resources involved. Do you know who is heading up the Zenith movement design department? Kindest regards, Bill

I too, find the Vulcain interesting. Looking to track one down. What makes a watch sell for $5,000 (new) and one for $10,000? If they are both stainless, in house and have the same complications? Just by winning a prize? Does it 'really' cost that much more to make a watch?
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 6 жыл бұрын
That, John, is the mystery. Watch companies can spend more on marketing than on the actual manufacture costs. Compare the price of a Habring2 Felix (around $4,500) with an in-house movement and almost no marketing and only two shops in the US and the price of a mass-produced IWC watch with an ETA movement for double that price and paying big bucks for marketing. Kindest regards, Bill
