This week I challenged myself to do an Extreme budget week of lunches for my kids. 7 days, 4 lunches per day for $1 each! Can I do it? Shop with me, cook with me, and see what's for lunch at our house this week. This will also probably be our cheapest Walmart grocery haul 2020.

Jennifer, thank you for touching on the fact that you had leftovers at the end of the week. That’s my biggest problem with most of these extreme budget challenges. If you have hard times it’s not usually for just one week. If you purchase off brands, so they are cheaper, or can buy a larger item, that costs a few cents more, you can stretch those items into the next week and be able to use some of the next week”s budget for different things. Also, Walmart has a wide variety of seasonings for about $1. If you just use $1 of your budget, each week, to buy a different seasoning, before long you’ll have a good collection. Most anything can be tasty if seasoned well! I’m very blessed not to have to worry about my food budget any more, but, I’ve been there! You’re doing a great job of teaching others how to shop smart and stretch their food budget, all while making it fun!

The Prices of these are quite strange as where I live every thing is just a bit more expensive - but the I suppose here in Australia we have Tax or GST (whatever you want to call it) all-ready added on when we look at the price. I find it strange how when you see the price you have to keep in mind tax, I think it would be easier to shop over here because it would be easier to work out the price of an item inc. GST/Tax (bc you get it). Like when you shop at Aldi it seems quite different to the Aldi over here.

Most grocery food items are exempt from taxation in the majority of states in the US (including Florida, where I believe they were shopping). Candy, soda/bubbly soft drinks, chewing gum, alcohol, prepared food that's ready to eat like grab-and-go salads or sandwiches, and dietary supplements ARE taxable in many states where other groceries are otherwise not taxed.
@bsidethebox
@bsidethebox 3 жыл бұрын
Many of the items she bought today are "loss leaders" i.e. items that are sold at less of a markup or even below cost as a way to get shoppers to choose their store vs competitors. Milk in some stores costs a DOLLAR per GALLON in my state--which is less than the store usually would pay for it and honestly less than it should cost to produce. They hope that the cheap milk/eggs/meat/whatever will bring shoppers in to do all their shopping...including items that have a larger markup so the store still profits.

I mean most people already have Mayo or miracle whip or some kind of condiment like that on hand, and if you don't, a little container of it is super easy to get. And if anything you don't HAVE to have it for a sandwich. I've had plenty of sandwiches with just meat and cheese because we were out of mayo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most "off brands" are actually name brands sold to stores under private label so the store can sell them as "store brand" for less. (I worked for a food broker for several years and private label branding was part of our contracts)

This is my first time to watch. You did a fantastic job providing healthy lunches on a budget. I don't know why you couldn't do this every week with a tweak or two. It seems like for the most part, your children ate the food provided. Also, love the plates and muffin cups. Great video. Thanks for sharing. ❤

it's me a phone isn’t something purchased regularly and often by a single person nor would you get away with paying 68c for one. Where I live for even unethically sourced eggs your looking around $4-5 so if they’re able to produce and sell eggs at 68c that’s a lot more concerning as people are clearly purchasing them often enough that it’s allowing supply and demand for such a low priced item

It's frustrating for sure to think of how broken the whole system is. I'd love for it to all be sustainably produced and priced, but yikes there would be a lot of poor people hung out to dry if that happened. The whole economy needs a revamp. Vote with the dollars you have, and make the choices you can affors to choose, and vote the people who profit off this ridiculously unbalanced system OUT.

i feel like it’s weird how you would buy stuff that’s like two dollars and then just make a little bit of it and say it’s like 16 cents like how can you just get an individual part of that whole box or bag of something hope you know what i mean sorry i’m being weird
@janstickles3035
@janstickles3035 3 жыл бұрын
@icy hot-. It is simple math. Price per serving can be easily calculated. Box will list serving size and number of servings per box. Take the price of the box and divide by the number of servings in the box and you will get the cost of the price per serving. Example - the box states that there are 12 servings in the box and each serving is say 6 crackers. If Jennifer paid say $2.00 for the box then you divide the cost of the box, ($2.00) by the number of servings ( in this example 12 servings), this will equal .16 cents per serving of 6 crackers which is what the stated was a serving. So when Jennifer gives her children 6 of the crackers it is .16 cents for each childs serving. Hope this helps.
