The guy who does the butt spins is the definition of a legend. Met him surfing there on a 2-4ft day doing the spins. I’ve never seen anyone else do them before. Glad to see he is well

Same mate. Jumped off the rocks at Whaley, hugely undergunned, there were about 6 of us out. Easy double over head. Got 1 wave in about an hour and is still to this day the biggest, longest wave I've ever caught. Very special place.

Surfed raglan in 1974 when there was no one around and the waved started at indicators which is what we called the outside point all the way to near the river mouth with 4 people out. There was nothing out at the point but a farm and dirt road. As they say you should have been here yesterday...

If you want to get into in the water surf photography, you could borrow a housing and see if it’s for you, knowledge of surf and water conditions helps. A tele photo lens from the shore can work well. Or the axis go for mobile.

When I was a kid in the late 70s we would only drive for 2 hours to Raglan if the wind blew SE.. Anyway the only day we ever arrived to completely flat conditions half a hour later a few small waves came through so we paddled out.. Within a hour it was 4 foot and by the end of the session 6 foot solid sets.. Back then in the late 70s there was less than 10 guys in the lineup.. 😊
