We had a chance to put a X95 Tavor through a 2G-ACM match. It was an opportunity to get some practical shooting time under the clock with this bullpup, so let's find out how it does on the clock!
Ian shot a not yet completed beta version of his WWSD AR15 DMR build to start testing things out. Ian's rifle has a Primary Arms 2.5x ACSS optic.
Stage 1 started on the mid range bay - multiple target engagements beginning at 175 yards and moving up to 150 yards through conduits, thus constricting our engagement and visibility.
The X95 isn't supremely accurate nor does it have a great trigger, being a bullpup, but how will it fare in this environment?

With some rifles, like the X95, you have to download to 29 rounds to load in a closed bolt depending on the mag. I wonder if Ian tested that with his new rifle yet.

This happened in my first 3 gun match i ever competed in. First mag ran fine, then I did the 'tactical reload' and when i fired my next shot when entering the next shooting area, the mag fell out as I did not download by 2. While I was embarrassed, it was a good lesson learned ;-)

Ian immediately dropping it and not noticing it was better. It must of been a spectacular moment when he fired the round in the chamber, went to fire the next shot, got a click, looked down and had that sudden, horrifying realization of what happened.

Ï dont think its the !gripe! against Tavors, its just that bullpups have more disadvantages than advantages.
@Cthippo1
@Cthippo1 7 жыл бұрын
DudeNumberOnePlus I think how you feel about bullpups reflects what you value in a firearm. If a shorter length and ease of use is more important then you probably love them. If trigger pull and ergonomics are more important to you then you probably hate them. Personally, I think the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages and I love bullpups, but I recognize that other people value different traits more and may not like them. I also think there is an element of fanboism to it for some people where they think the AR or AK is the only right answer and so everything else is measured in terms of how close it is to their preferred platform.

An interesting point to consider: Stone et al did a test of bullpup vs. traditional rifles, having experienced rifle users complete various shooting trials. What was interesting was that the shooters showed a preference for traditional rifles, but the numbers showed they actually performed better with bullpups, in terms of accuracy and ergonomics. Basically, like Karl, they didn't LIKE bullpups. But they actually did better with bullpups than traditional rifles. To quote the authors: 'The bullpup weapon designs were found to provide a significant advantage in accuracy and shooter stability, while subjects showed considerable preference toward the conventional weapons.' I suspect the anti-bullpup sentiment, particularly among American shooters, may be the result of what people are used to (most American shooters grow up shooting conventional rifles, after all). When you're used to shooting guns that feel a certain way, anything that feels different will feel wrong. Here's the actual study. journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0018720813509107

Ian & Karl, you're the best. Everybody regularly doing 2-gun/3-gun has had bloopers like this or worse, but almost none of them would have shared it as a community learning experience. This is the difference between a channel that accurately represents reality, and one that just wants to show some cool stuff and get views.

Having served in the military where quick mag changes could be the difference between life and death, and ensuring proper mag seating the first time is imperative, firm and consistent and non-jerky pressure to guide the magazine all the way in is the best and most reliable way to seat 5.56 mags. both the Tavor and the AR15 platform have spring loaded magazine retention catches which sit in the cut-out on the magazine. When the magazine is inserted, the catch will get pushed out and will not lie flush with the receiver; when it goes all the way home, the catch falls down into the slot in the magazine and holds it in place. That is the best way to know that your magazine is seated fully as sometimes if there is debris or something in the mag-well, it could stick and seem like the mag is fully seated when it isn't. A full magazine is also under a lot of spring tension from the bullets pushing down the follower spring and thus inserting it into a rifle where the bolt is closed, you have to put even more tension on the spring: quick smacks will often not be enough to seat the magazine fully as it can't overcome the resisting pressure. I've seen this happen to too many guys on the range. It is always better to push the magazine all the way in with your hand and feel and hear the click as the mag catch drops into place and you can do a quick visual inspection to see that the catch is flush with the receiver.

Ian got a raw 50s run with a 10 second mag change once he hit the ground. There is a 10 second gap between when Ian and Karl started firing and they were in their firing positions at relatively the same time. I think it's fair to say that without the mag drop Ian would have scored close to 40s.

Appreciate the new editing strategy with the split after the final discussion, would have liked to hear more stage feedback from Karl since the feedback is usually the best part of these videos. I also like that Karl had the "worse" rifle, traditionally it seems like Karl has the best rifle (74 vs FAL for Ian) and with Karl's better skill we don't really learn much. But if a worse shooter can outscore a better one because he has a better setup, you've really proven something (or produced interesting anecdotal evidence, at least).

Coming from experience with the L85, I get why a lot of US shooters don't like Bullpups. The weight is different, the triggers are often pretty bad etc. I suppose it's just never much of an issue from my POV because most bullpups are issued rifles somewhere, and the sticking point of that is, like with the L85, an army trains to overcome the minor details that would throw off someone with a lot of traditional AR experience.

I recently watched a you tube video of a Russian "sniper" rifle which was moderated (silenced), strangely it was a bullpup. Being English you will understand that I fully sympathise with your dislike of them, SA80 yuk!, but do you think that the concept is beyond redemption? Hubris is the word that sprang to mind after the start of Ian's stage 1, "Might be my best chance to beat you," he said. Hubris, definitely hubris. ;-) Great work as usual you two, really enjoyable.

Insert mag and tug to be sure it seated. Sucks to be that guy (I know). I'll also say that you don't need to slam the magazine to seat on a closed bolt (at least not an AR). Insert until you feel resistance, then push up with the magazine while pulling down with the wrist on the hand that's on the grip. Sort of a push/pull operation. It works for me every time and requires surprisingly little effort. I didn't know until an instructor showed me.

Karl can be pretty negative about bullpups. That's fair, and he would certainly know more than I would, but I'd be interested to see his thoughts (or, better yet, a 2G-ACM) on the P(S)90. Reloading the thing can be...finicky (read: bullpup-like), but beyond that it seems like a pretty solid weapon
@jameshealy4594
@jameshealy4594 7 жыл бұрын
It would be interesting as I believe the match rules would allow using it on pistol targets also, though Karl has stated that he has seen the 5.7 round fail to knock over pistol plates even with solid hits so I don't think it'd be optimal. Not debating the effectiveness of the round necessarily, but it's certainly a weakness in this context.

Yes, but remember to ONLY SLAM the mag in on a closed bolt! I was at a range this weekend zeroing in my AR15. I was zeroing it in prone. I already had the bolt to the rear anticipating putting the mag in and releasing the bolt. The guy helping me handed me the mag and I seated it in. He reached down and slammed it up from the bottom and a round popped up out of the mag and immediately caused a problem. So! Only slam the mag on a CLOSED BOLT! Seat the mag if the bolt is open.
