With an aim to decongest Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBIA) in Dumdum, the West Bengal government has decided to construct a second airport in the vicinity of Kolkata, a senior official said.
The state government has started looking for land in neighbouring South 24 Parganas district, he said, adding that Bhangar is among the possible locations.
In a recent communication, Chief Secretary H K Dwivedi has directed South 24 Parganas District Magistrate P Ulganathan to earmark land for the proposed airport, which will have facilities of an international airport, the official said.

The Bengal cannot come out of it's mindset. TMC came in protesting land acquisition in Singur. How would one think of TMC doing the same mistake as Buddhadeb? We need to come out of this populist mindset and also need to set up big metropolitan area like KMDA in Durgapur, Kalyani, Haldia, Siliguri, Asansol etc. Kolkata has too little space to expand. We can follow Maharashtra style of Urban development. They have big airports and cities like Pune, Nagpur. Pune is now the second metro city of Maharashtra.

The state should not miss this opportunity. Kalyani should be a good option and can be easily connected to the city with 8 lane corridor and metro service which should be a part of the 2nd Airport project and the State Government has to proactively acquire land with dialogue and due compensation

There is a common complaint that farmers are not getting money, consumers are complaining vegetables are too costly. Cultivators complain cultivation is not profitable. If so, why not then welcoming this kind of mega project? Go and check there are political parties behind this trouble.

Absolutely. I heard farmers in Bhangar before that they feel farming is not profitable. So as long as due compensation is given for land, there should be no reason to protest. I sense political conspiracy.

I think we should expand and renovate behala airport instead of making another airport. Bhangar location is not suitable atleast according to me. Behala airport will be better for south kolkata people.

Why state government is not taking effort sincerely for new Air Port near Kolkata at Kalyani instead of Bhangar, I think the issue of distance from Kolkata airport should be within 40 km where distance between kalyani & Kolkata airport is 42 km as raised by airport authority may be solved if state government actually wants,,The communication and all other benefits are much more higher than Bhangar,

কি পরিনিতি। দুঃখ করে এখন কোন লাভ নেই । ওই ঘুষ খাওয়া সিঙ্গুরে নেনো কারখানা যেন না হয় আন্দোলন কারি বুদ্ধিজীবীরা এখন কোথায়। জনগনের সামনে এসে দারান। এখন পালিয়ে গিয়ে বাঁচতে পারবেনত।

I think it would be better to build 2nd airport in West side of Ganga...may be in Howrah or in Hooghly district...So that airport can be a mega hub for passengers and Cargo . This will further help to develop west side of Kolkata faster ....

Bhangar plan is dropped for now considering long term environmental impact..Kalyani is on the radar again..but, whatever distance it is, shall never be feasible if it takes more than 45 minutes from the north boundary of the city i.e. Laketown, Chinarpark, Newtown etc. But, what it takes is 1 hour and 30 minutes and thus makes the location unviable as of now..I have failed to understand, why it takes 90 minutes time despite of Kalyani Expressway to travel only 48 km..the road zone has to be 120 kmph+, only then Kalyani shall be fit to hold an Airport, which is supposed to cater the 3rd largest megacity of India..

Bangar is too far to attract passenger who want to come in kolkata.. Better make it in kalyani, highway and railway are well connected...in future metro can get connected to it bcoz of distance

In 2013-14, we have given opinion that, a new airport should be built in Howrah-Hooghly area where land and connectivity doesn't have much problem. Extended Dankuni or say take Singur, where 400 acre readily available.

It's happening in Kalyani or it's not happening... Bhangar was bound to fail from the beginning. Not only is it extremely inaccessible to rest of Kolkata Metro region (including Howrah, Hooghly, North & South 24 Pgs, Nadia and other parts of South Bengal) due to lack of poor road connectivity, that place Bhangar is infested with _peaceful-religion_ people, who despite holding Indian Voter ID cards & Aadhar cards, think they live in their motherland Kangladesh. Forget airport, you cannot set up even a 5x5 sqft tea shop there if you wanted to.

Kalyani can easily be a viable alternative option but, to find more than 3 thousand acre of vacant land is next to impossible proposition there. Bhangore is the best option no doubt. But the Govt. will not go for forceable direct acquisition of land because of political backlash. In West Bengal, nothing gets priority over politics ! If Kalyani is selected, a small airport that spreads around 2.5 acres, can be built up but, that's not going to serve the purpose.

Kalyani has an important spot to deserve an airport to function at full fledge - AIIMS Kalyani. The only AIIMS of WB. If the need of a green corridoring happens, then Kalyani Airport could easily serve it! Other than that, it has the district headquarter of Hooghly district, the Hooghly-Chuchura-Chandannagar area and the important railway junction Bandel stn. to just the opposite of the Hooghly river! The only circumference that is in the range of KMDA area and has some bits of resemblances with proper Kolkata! The other three district headquarters situated in KMDA area (i.e. Howrah, Barasat and Alipore) are so close to Kolkata that they are not able to cater to for a new airport (Barasat is merely 10 km from the Dumdum airport itself!). For these reasons, the most fruitful option for Kolkata's 2nd Airport is obviously Kalyani. Moreover, Kalyani is also a planned city with ample spaces, roads, institutions, industrial and economic plannings, good connectivities, and the brainchild of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray - the same visionary who developed nowaday's Saltlake (also known as Bidhannagar), and also wanted to have Kalyani flourish like the same!! A good boost to the connectivity of Kalyani Airport with the Dumdum airport/core of Kolkata could be the Kalyani Expressway and a well-developed Airport Metro for faster connection (New Delhi model!). The same could be done for the opposite side also, then the connection of the Hooghly's district-headquarter Chuchura and other suburbs of Kolkata, with the core city would develop simultaneously, side-by-side with Delhi Road on this western side of Hooghly river! The two metros on two sides of Hooghly could be also joined at Kalyani side and other one by the East-West Metro corridor; in a Ring-Metro fashion to provide more convenience to travellers and commuters! Surely, a huge and expandable international airport cannot be situated in an area which is exploited with agricultural plots! Land use pattern matters in the output of these development projects.

কলকাতা বিমানবন্দর এ প্লেনের জায়গা নেই এটা কতটা সত্যি জানিনা। আরো অনেক কিছুর মতনই বিগত অনেক বছর ধরেই অন্য অনেক শহরই কলকাতার থেকে বড় হয়ে গেছে, যাত্রী/পণ্য চলাচল অনেক বেশি হয়। দিল্লী, মুম্বাই, ব্যাঙ্গালোর এসব বিমানবন্দরে উঠতে নামতে দেরি হওয়া খুবই নিত্যনৈমত্তিক ব্যাপার যেখানে, সেখানে কলকাতায় দেরি প্রায় হয় না, কারণ কম বিমান চলে। অবতরণের পর যেখানে সব বিমানবন্দরেই প্রায় air bridge পাওয়া যায় না, বা গেলেও বহুদূরে নামায় সেখানে কলকাতায় air bridge পাওয়া যায়নি খুবই কম হয়েছে। নেমে এসে belt এ luggage নিতে এসে দেখা যায় যে আশেপাশের সব belt প্রায় খালি পড়ে, পুরো জায়গাটা যেন এক ঘুমন্ত বিমানবন্দর, এমন হাল পৃথিবীর আর কোনো বিমানবন্দরে চোখে পড়েনি। কারণ সেই যাত্রী কম, বিমান কম। আর কম যাত্রীর কারণেই বহু সংস্থা তাদের আন্তর্জাতিক পরিষেবা বন্ধ করে দিয়েছে। তো এই অবস্থায় জানিনা বর্তমান বিমানবন্দরের সম্প্রসারণ বা অন্য কোথাও আরেকটা তৈরি কতটা যৌক্তিক। তার চেয়ে বর্তমানের bathroom থেকে lounge এগুলো কে renovate করুক। Gate গিয়ে বেরিয়ে এক রাশ দালালের, গাড়ির চালকের দাপাদাপি বড্ড বিরক্তিকর।

ভাঙ্গর অবশ্যই কোলকাতা বিমান বন্দরের বিকল্প হতে পারে। যদি হয় তাহলে ওই অঞ্চলের আর্থিক উন্নতি হবে। কর্ম সংস্থানও হবে।

Rohit selectively deleted my comment. But, what I mean to say that Bhangar is a Muslim dominated area. Wherever these people live they create agitation against government and try to blackmail the system. At times they play victim card. No other communities do such heinous things in Indian Subcontinent. Mamata Banerjee did agitation and Tata left Bengal. Now, she is facing the same kinda agitation. What you sow you reap. Not possible..... agricultural land and water body around Kolkata is very much part of economic prosperity of Kolkata. It is impossible to establish a new airport by acquiring land. Only way out Andal Airport and improved transit train from Andal to Kolkata. Airport Authority is looking for a transit airport for North East and Abdal airport can serve the purpose.

Why damage the wetland? Yes a airport will be built, but this will eventually lead to Kolkata being inhabitable. European Airlines did not leave Kolkata for the size of the airport, it is about economics. Sounds like another news manufacturing shop.

Till now.,What is the greatest size and capacity of airport on the extension of sea - side made in the world, and if the second airport of Kolkata to be constructed is less than that capacity, then why not construct such airport on the sea-side without taking land of farmers but the question is, will it be cost effective.

@@ayush9668 Agree... But who else have you got? Mamata at best deserves to be like a Culture & Communications Minister or at best Women and Child Development minister. That's her aptitude. But the rest under her are even worse who are happy to just be there to tiptoe around her, being all "Yes-Ma'am"s. Lack of qualified people into Bengal's politics and government is costing the state and its people badly. No one is capable of taking bold steps/decisions, and live under the constant fear that any decision towards progress and development may lead to their ousting/rejection by the masses. They're least bothered to educate the mass uneducated population of the state and work towards true development and progress of the state and its people. Politicians can be corrupt (at least they are _allowed_ to be in India), but at the same time they should genuinely work towards the betterment of the state and its people at large, and not shy away from taking bold moves. That is the case across India. But in Bengal, politicians have cultivated the practice of not doing anything for generations together, all talk and no work. This is the legacy delivered by the Communists, and is being carried forward as usual even today. Mantra to survive is: "Keep your Chair and Keep the Supreme Leader Madam happy, and continue to mint money." And as for development and progress, Trinamool's Motto as we all know is that "Charidike Unnayan - UNNAYAN Raastay Daariye Aache". That's the slogan of all the uneducated leaders of Bengal. Because truly, nothing was done under CPIM era, and now even a blue & white painting by the roadside is considered "Development" to Trina-FOOLs and the entire population of Bengal at large.

They are least bothered about Airport. Rural people in Bengal are not aspirational like their counterparts in the rest of the country. Across the country, people are ready to give away their lands in exchange of lakhs and crores of compensation, so that they can build homes or buy cars, and afford quality education with that money. Landlosers in such projects are usually given at least one job per family, to take their livelihoods forward. No one has any problem, and eventually, sooner or later, even these rural people too have improvement in standard of living, and aspire to get to fly through the new Airport constructed on their ancestral land. In Bengal it is different (as usual). Here rural people have been taught for decades together Not to Dream about aspirations and ambitions - at least not by virtue of hardwork. Communists did an excellent job by destroying the very nature of dreaming to be rich and educated, for both rural and urban Bengal, and they have religiously taught NOT to aspire for higher standards of living. So now, you cannot expect the rural people of Bengal after so many years and decades to change their mentality overnight for some development/infrastructure project (be it roads/highways, industrial corridors, airports, anything...). This is the scenario throughout Bengal - that's why Bengal cannot have world class infra projects like other states of India. Thank the Communists and Baal Selaam company for their impeccable contribution to the society in Bengal.

Not easy project. Navi Mumbai project was initiated in 2002 , but actual construction started in 2018 , so by 2030 it will operational. Same here.. By 2050 or 2060 may be done , hope some where in kalyani or bhangare or some where near Bangladesh border.

See... This is the difference between places with education and places without education: Even within a single state - less than 100 km apart from each other... People from Bhangar are not interested about economic development, and hence will mostly (if not all) will say NO to Airport or any other infrastructure/development work. On the other hand, people in Kalyani (farther away from heart of Kolkata city than Bhangar) are much more educated, and most of the people from Kalyani/Nadia district will welcome projects like Airport. No wonder Kalyani is getting a slew of projects like New Highways, Elevated Corridors, Education & Medical Hubs, Logistic Parks etc. Education ka Chakkar, Babu Bhaiyya, Education ka Chakkar...

ভাঙ্গর এর প্রস্তাবিত বিমান বন্দর এর নামকরণ করুন শেখ শাহজাহান আন্তরজাতিক বিমানবন্দর, দেখুন কলকাতার কাছাকছি ২০-৩০km এর মধ্যে ৭৫০০একর জায়গা পেতে কোনো অসুবিধাই হবে না।

Why not remove the obstruction on the 2nd runway and allow it's extension. The current infrastructure can accommodate much more. Moreover, Bhangar is the heart of East Calcutta wet lands and cannot be diverted as such. So Bhangar has to be ruled out.
