Om bram brim brom brahmachariniyay namaha. This is the powerful mantra recited on the second day of Navratri where, devotees worship Goddess Brahmacharini, the second form of Goddess Durga. For the second day, sugar is the offering made to Ma Bramhacharini. She is depicted as walking barefoot and holding a japa mala (prayer beads) and a kamandalu (water pot).
People observe fasting and engage in special prayers, reciting hymns and chanting mantras dedicated to Goddess Brahmacharini who is also as the name suggests signifying being unmarried - When Parvati Ma in her firm resolve to win over and marry Lord Shiva, does intense Tapasya or penece in the forest, she thus becomes a yogini or Brahmacharini. As she is also renowned as Devi Yogini or Tapasvini, bhakts are also blessed with knowledge and wisdom. She also governs the planet Mangal, and so devotees pray to her for all good fortunes.
