The main thing with this song is it exactly matches the kind of rhythm of the rowed boat of a determined person. Not someone wanting to to break records, but someone out fishing or delivering goods to the Confederate soldiers/fleet. If I ever get to visit the southern states I'll be wanting to play this song whilst exploring the Mississippi River in a small craft.

Thanks very much for the kind words ! Here's a good place to start: www.loc.gov/collections/american-sheet-music-1820-to-1860/about-this-collection/ Please remember, much of this material would be considered highly offensive in today's society. However, it is of an historical nature, and therefore worthy of preservation. Happy hunting !

We are interested in history and share your attitude, that these songs are worth to preserve. Your work contributes to keeping this heritage alive. We therefore wish you success for your work. In a way, it’s sad that this isn’t as popular as the other tunes of the time period. It’s a nice romance ballad. Though, in another way, it’s nice that it isn’t as well-known as the others, since it saves it from being too terribly corrupted from its original form. It hasn’t gone through the multiple adaptations that “Listen to the Mockingbird” or “Dixie” have, which have diluted the original lyrics to the point of parody. It’s nice, it’s wholesome, and it makes for a great song to sing to your true love.
