This video is a test of old vs new golf irons. Mark Brooks, a 7-time PGA Tour winner and 1996 PGA Champion, joins to conduct some testing of old vs new golf irons. More specifically, Mark tests his old 1999 Apex Forged Blade 7-iron against his current gamer, a PING i230 7-iron.
In this video, Mark and 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald use Trackman technology at 2nd Swing's Dallas store location to identify the similarities and differences in this old vs new golf irons test.

Amazing to see the tech improvements. But to also see how excellent of a ball striker tour level players are, even into their older years. Great video.

By far, it's one of the best episodes. There's nothing like a master of the game sharing their skills. If you notice that quick squat before his catapult.That's something to be noticed. Thank you for sharing your experience. That's one of your best days at work, I'm sure.😉

Great interview!!! What knowledge. Most players of this day and age want longer and higher just like the modern irons produce. For a guy like me…Marks age group…I have struggled with modern irons. Recently went back to 1986 Wilson Staff blades and it’s like going home. Lower ball flight, no wild distances to deal with. I am now scoring well again. Crazy isn’t it.

There was a golf ball well before the paradigm shift in golf balls (Titleist Pro V1). It was the Spaulding Tour Edition. It was sold in the middle 1980’s, and it was basically a solid core ball as well. The primary user was Greg Norman and he would basically thin the irons shots on purpose to create gobs of spin. Cost him at least one major, the 1986 PGA Championship. Then later, the Strata replaced the Tour Edition. But of course when the Pro V1 because of the large volumes of tour players who played Titleist anyway, the rubber wound golf balls would become obsolete.

Titleist have ALWAYS been the best balls and always will be.......The only reason any tour pro has ever played any other ball is when they are getting PAID $$$ to play it.

I used to list after the Hogan Apex irons. Never good enough to do them justice. Played Ping Eye 2 Copies! currently transitioning from MP20-MB’s to i230 irons. Very different “feel” but the forgiveness and consistency is impressive. Still get good results from some pretty poor strikes! Hoping they will help me shave the last few shots into cat A.

Great episode, but I'd like to see a little closer apples to apples with the Hogan Apex with the Nippon Pro 105. With the S400 at 132g you are certainly going to have a slower swing speed, lower launch and peak and less carry.

Firstly great video.. what a player. Amazing to see his control with that Hogan, BUT question…there is 3 degrees of loft difference between those heads and the shaft on the Ping is probably lighter. Easily hit a club further?
@2ndswing
@2ndswing Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes, 3 degrees difference and a lighter shaft. So the increased distance is expected. But the spin numbers and the height/landing angle are what impressed Mark the most. That's where the updates in club design and technology helped in this case

I came to this video in hopes of finding an answer to this question. I am a beginner golfer looking to buy my first set of clubs. I recently talked with my grandpa and he offered to give me his set of ping irons and callaway clubs from the 90s and I wondered whether a set of cheap modern clubs (looking at a nitro set from walmart) or an old set of callaways and ping would be a better

I will say that the PING doesn't sound good in this video, which echos my experience. It felt very firm, if not HARD in my testing. The feel alone kept me from going to an i230. (4.6 cap). This is different than the iBlades and the i230 which felt fine for being cast. The i230 do not feel fine.

@enzy6434
@enzy6434 Жыл бұрын
You seem inexperienced at golf to be thinking that way. It isn't all about "distance". The newer, modern clubs are consistently hitting higher spin then the old clubs (thus giving more stopping power), and are hitting the ball a lot higher (even more stopping power to hold greens). And are overall a lot more forgiving for thin / fat shots and will get a lot more distance on mis-hits. So the difference in reality is a LOT more then just "5-10 yards of distance gain".
@ooojonooo
@ooojonooo Жыл бұрын
@@enzy6434 LOL are you serious? Did you not watch the video at all? The tour pro had hit most of his shots pretty consistently with pretty much the same spin and with a pretty tight dispersion. Not only that he was able to shape the shots to his liking for both models. My point is that the biggest differential between the two and 20+ years of innovation was the distance. Is that not true? And to be fair to the other guys point, the lofts definitely played a role in that so I guess 20+ years of innovation in the hands of someone who is a good ball striker is minimal to say the least. Higher MOI might play a factor if you aren't a good striker but as you can clearly see in this video, in the hands of someone actually good, it means little or nothing. This is the same reason why you don't see pros playing "super game improvement" clubs on tour. Oh but go ahead and make wild assumptions based on one line of comment.
