For anyone asking, the reason both have differing smash factors / efficiency it’s because GC2 can’t track Clubhead speed so calculates it off of ball speed from an iron, therefore increase in ball speed means higher smash factor. I got no reason to fabricate results guys, if anything I want the older equipment to perform better!

One reason for the lower smash factor could be contributed to a softer carbon steel.

Used the Nike VR pro combo set for 6 years ,pure blades up to 8 iron and did really well with them ,changed 18 months ago to AP3 ,My games not much different but the AP3's are easier to hit in the longer irons ,and I can hit a decent 4 iron now more consistenty. Still got a pure Tiger nike 6 iron blade I use for practice .I think you can use anything once you get used to it and practice plenty .A bad swing day on the course is a bad day what ever you use .Nice video Simon .

Hogan Apex II's are my weapons of choice. I only bought them because they looked beautiful! I've demoed all sorts of stuff and don't really hit them any better. Bit better on Poor's strikes, but that's about it. I don't play to a high level by any means, I just love them. Paid £40 for 2-Equalizer in pristine condition. Especially considering they're older than I am. 1979 these came out. Great video. The numbers really are negligible considering the age.

Hogan apex 11 cameo irons were the first irons I used in 1983. My Father bought them for me, thinking that they would be easier to hit than his blades, which were basically thin Scottish blades, with a head the size of a soup spoon, circa 1930s. The feedback was unreal and if you didn't hit them on the sweetspot, it felt like an electric shock running through your arms. Incidentally the apex 11s were the last irons that Mr Hogan used. I sure miss those Baby Blades.

I switched from distance improvement irons to blades and dropped 10 strokes (after 1000 balls at the range hitting accurately for the 1st time). There's nothing as nice as a blade! The feel, sound, ball flight, workability etc are incredible.

Great vid! I think blades give a true representation of how tech has barely moved forward its alot to do with companies using shadowy marketing claims but actually just changing the weight and lofts and it does highlight the importance of getting fit for clubs or at least go for a custom fitting to understand what works for you. I play a set of mizuno mp62 which i spec to my requirements and they perform no different to all the different brands ive tried. ... but it is nice having a shiny new club though 😁

I've got mizuno t-zoid pro's which I love. They were made in 1996, 23 years ago. I've tried game improvement irons over the years and nothing produces the consistency of these muscle backs. While technically not quite a blade, I can't tell even after a blind test. Yes, I hit an MP 18 and my t-zoid one after another as the fitter handed them to me randomly. Blades all the way!

So true about focus. I have a set of Titleist Tour models 1-PW (around 1987) I never got rid of. I bring them out early in the year and they definitely make me focus more on hitting the middle. I don't hit the ball as far as I used to, still far enough. Even with the higher lofts over my AP2s, I still hit them farther. Maybe better turf interaction with the thinner sole. But there's no better feel than a middle strike with a pure blade.

I'm glad to see you're getting a huge jump in distance too - mine are factory loft and I couldn't figure out why my pw was now carrying 145, up from 135 with my 57's. Gapping is an issue now - do you think it's worth getting everything lofted up a little, or should I just get a gap wedge and bench the 3 iron? Thanks man love the channel!

You got it in one! Blades make you focus. I have been using an old blade at the range as a training aid- just to really make my self concentrate on strike and consistency. Not just whaling away with a big GI iron that hides all your mistakes for you.... Now when I go back to my semi-bladed miuras (that I actually play with) im hitting them so much better. But I still have the more helpful inner cavity clubs in my bag from 7i longer... only my semi blades in 8i and shorter.

Ben Hogan equaliser wedges (amazing.) 8/9/Pw = MC 501’s 6/7 iron = IC 601 3+5 hybrids. And yes they are expensive, but it’s my main hobby and they make me happy every time I look at them. So I saved up and bought one iron every second month for a year until I had the set I wanted 😂

I’m not a better player either lol. But playing with a blade improved my golf almost immediately. Certainly within a month my iron play had a noticeable improvement in accuracy and consistently- even if I lost a bit of distance because I was forced to have a more controlled swing and not throw the kitchen sink at it. So I’m now a full club shorter than I was before (eg I use an 8i for 150yards instead of my 9) but I can hit those numbers time after time- which is what matters the most. Plus if you ever get the chance, please do try the Miura mc501’s. They are a thing of beauty and worth every single penny IMO. And I’m not s great golfer and I’m sure as hell not rich lol.

Did you check the swing weight between the 2 clubs? You put a DG 105 in the MP 18 but that's about 20 to 25 grams lighter than the S300 in the MP 32. I dont think it would make that much of a difference, but the 2 shafts were definitely different in weight. Should have compared to a DG120 or even an S400 tour issue for a better comparison

I have played blades for 30 years, cavity back irons are like training wheels on a bike. If you hit it off the toe, thin or high on the face you should be punished not rewarded. I want my skill to shine through not the tech. I have not hit a cavity back iron in a while but from what I remember is you can hit three solid strikes and get three different distances. When I hit my blade 9 iron (which is a degree weaker in loft to most pitching wedges no days) I know it will go 135 yds every time on a solid strike, not 135 then 140 then 142. So if you want to challenge yourself and become a better ball striker buy a set of old blades and play the winter with them and in the spring when you bring out your cavities you will be better for it. In fact during the winter I play hickory irons and persimmon woods to sharpen my skills. Sorry if this turned into a rant, I just get a bit annoyed when reviews bash blades.

If your golf is about the score, use something to shoot your best which will probably be something forgiving. If the score doesn't matter use whatever, this might be same forgiving clubs, it might be old blades and woods with actual wood heads or it might even be clubs with wooden shafts. It is all golf. Just have your definition of fun doing it.

Hmmm love your videos, BUT this one I think what might have happened is that you compared a MP32 with a S300 shaft that weighs 130 grams to a MP18 with S300 105 grams... that will result in the MP18 “feeling heavier” only because there is 25 grams less weight in the shaft and thus the balance severely shifts to the the head making the head “feel” heavier?? Would have been interesting to see the swingweight difference! Cool video anyway! Keep it up

Playing Taylormade TP MB's actually lowered my score when i started. Followed the trend and got the game improvement irons my first year and couldn't play consistently at all. I could always find the center but The yardages were always different. Picked up a used set of the 2011 MB's and immediately started hitting straight consistent yardages and went from a 14 HC to an 8 HC almost overnight. Now on my 3rd year playing i can consistently play to a 4 HC or better with the P730s KBS C-Taper 130x shafts. Chunky wide sole hurts my game. So i started playing "Blades" at a 14 HC when everybody said i was crazy and my game improved drastically. Moral of the story is do not just fall in line with these Handicap ratings that put you in a category that your not good enough to use certain clubs. Test everything and if you pick up a MB,MC,CB and tell yourself i cant hit this then you've already set yourself up for failure. Go into any shot with any club with the same positive thoughts and you will improve before swinging the club.

Also what’s interesting is my 6 iron carries about the same as yours. But my driving distance is still about 70 yards behind you! I’m probably off 13 because I’m so inconsistent. When you button them out of the middle there’s no better feeling. I find if I hit them a bit toe’y I’ll lose around 10 yards but they’re a lot more forgiving than people think! no more words of truth have even been spoken. Tiger is great, but people like Jones, Hogan, Nicklaus, Sneed and Nelson were far better. Equipment then and now is the main difference. Lol you guys sound like old “get off my lawn” guys. No one has ever dominated the game like tiger. His peak is something that has never been seen. That’s why he’s considered the greatest. Tech would not have helped those other guys because the field all had the same - it was level competition.
@jeffhollon4545
@jeffhollon4545 5 жыл бұрын
I'll just put this here. 1. Including this years Masters, Tiger has only 1 come from behind victory in a Major and Jack had 8 on the final day. 2. Jack has 19 runner-ups in Majors while Tiger only has 6. Jack has 48 3rd place Major finishes vs Tiger having 24. 3. Jack has 18 Major victories and Tiger has 15. **This is all FACT, not opinion, if you FEEL Tiger is the greatest of all time, that is fine, but the FACTS say something different** ON TECH. Jack regularly hit drives with Balatas and Persimmon Woods over 320yds. To say this was incredible is an understatement. That was far outside the norm for his day. If he would have had access to better balls and clubs, there is no telling what would happen. AND, if tech didn't matter, then why do R&D departments for all the major makers spend millions every year designing new products (yes, some are money grabs) but you can't tell me that the consistency and characteristics of the balls aren't far superior today than in the 60s and 70s. On clubs, there was no mention of CGI, MOI, weight injection and playing with computers to design club faces for maximum distance and control in the 60s and 70s. It is just a fact that today's game is different and mainly because of advances in club design, materials and ball manufacturing. It is just something that can't be argued on a scientific level. This means the players from the 60s and 70s had to be more precise and do more with their ball to make shots happen whereas today's players can "get away" with hitting off center shots. **WATCH THIS AS EVIDENCE** kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7qffqyBzJy-gX0.html I wont even go into course conditions between the eras. Ask any older tour player and they will tell you today's courses are in much, much better shape than what they played on a regular basis. This does make a difference as well. Courses have had to change layouts and length due to technology changes in equipment. Ask ANY course designer or superintendent and they will tell you the same thing. I'm not saying that Tiger wouldn't have been a top player in the 60s and 70s, but as of now, he doesn't posses the record to justify him having the label the greatest of all time. I would call him the 2nd greatest of all time. When he gets to Jacks Major record, then i will change my mind.

You'd said the 18's had DG105's in them and were 1* stronger loft... Most likely the 32's had ole school Dynamic Gold S300 =135 gram shaft vs 105 gram shaft ... The shaft weight difference and stronger loft are enough reason for the couple of yards difference... If the 32s are strengthened 1* and given the same shaft -- the difference will not be seen .. 18s aren't made of magic metal -- they're clubs -- they look just like many of Miuno's previous offerings with a different # on them...
