Development of the 2S1 Gvosdika (carnation) 122 mm self-propelled howitzer began in 1967. First prototypes were built in 1969 and in was adopted by the Soviet Army in 1971. Production of the 2S1 Gvosdika commenced in 1972. It was first seen in public at a Polish Army parade in 1974. This artillery systems was deployed in large numbers. It has been exported to a number of Soviet allies. Also it has seen combat during numerous military conflicts. The Gvosdika is currently in service with a number of countries.
The 2S1 Gvosdika is fitted with a D-32 122 mm rifled howitzer. It is a modified variant of the D-30 towed howitzer. It is fitted with a load assisting system. Maximum rate of fire is 4-5 rounds per minute. The Gvosdika is compatible with all 122 mm munitions developed for the D-30 howitzer. These include fragmentation, HE-FRAG, HEAT, cluster, smoke and illumination projectiles. A total of 40 rounds are carried, usually 35 HE-FRAG and 5 HEAT. Maximum range of fire with HE-FRAG projectile is 15.2 km.
The 2S1 Gvosdika SPH has a crew of four, including commander, gunner, loader and driver.
Hull and turret are of welded steel armor construction. Protection is against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection system.
The 2S1 Gvosdika is based on the modified MT-LB multi-purpose armored vehicle chassis. Vehicle is powered by a YaMZ-238V diesel engine, developing 240 horsepower. Vehicle is amphibious, though the ammunition load has to be reduced to 30 rounds in order to cross rivers and lakes afloat. On water vehicle is propelled by its tracks. Maximum speed on water is 4.5 km/h. The 2S1 Gvosdika SPH can be airlifted by An-12, Il-76, C-130, or similar military transport aircraft.
Hope you enjoy!!

Finnish Gvozdika driver here! This thing is the best! The handling when driving can be finicky, but it is easy to adjust and also easy to do field maintenance. In Finland we place for at the back of the turret for gear, basically an open crate and currently we have PKM mounts for the loaders side, before that we had 1 AK per tank plus our service pistols, I guess we would be given the AK as well if things get really bad.

It's perfect. Its relatively cheap to produce, its light and amphibious so it can go almost anywhere providing artillery support to even the most aggressive fast moving attacks. And it's made from existing inventory so it's very little new parts to complicate supply chain problems. What's there not to love?! Why didn't the US just put a 105mm in a turret on top of m113s? Not the same as 2s1, but a budget level infantry support vehicle that can offer more range than 120mm mortars has a LOT of appeal. All the 105mm m108s got converted to 155mm m109s in the '70s to kill soviet tanks. Infantry needs all the love they can get! They're the hardest working MF's on the planet!

the experience of the Second world war made it clear to the USSR that if they want to reach the shores of the Atlantic ocean in the shortest possible time, most of their equipment must swim across rivers and lakes. The implication was that most (perhaps all) of the bridges would be blown up, so it was important for the USSR to attack extremely quickly, so that the enemy did not have time to dig in and build a good defense (I apologize for possible errors in the text)

One thing I would like to see more of are obscure combat engineer armored vehicles like the M728 CEV or the British Centurion based CEV both of whom mount an insane 165mm Demolition gun. I've seen it demonstrated in real life back in the 1990's when I was at Ft. Leanordwood, Missouri (home of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers) and it was extremely impressive. Sadly it's modern replacements no longer have the demolition gun, but they still have some very cool features like the built in line-charges on the U.S. Army's M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicle, another very cool vehicle that could be reviewed.

Missed out 2S34 Hosta/chosta version (120mm mortar) and also under the part of direct fire the 2S1 actually has anti armour HEAT rounds up to 580mm penetration not really able to take out modern tanks but could still be useful against IFV, APC and buildings and in Syria this was one of the main targets in direct fire was buildings. Another well known round you missed off is the laser guided kitolov-2M. The Soviet Union and Russia pretty much have designed laser guided shells for all their systems. Just thought be useful to add info.

Polish made ones are also called "Goździk" - yes the name is takrn from flower - carnation. It's because when you will watch this gun firing in highest up point in slo-mo you gonna see a fireball of the muzzle that looks like a flower itself and long, thin 122mm gun straight up looks much like its stalk. BTW Regular crew for Goździk are 4 guys. When you are in need for lots of rounds to be fired out there here it comes the 5-th guy. Now you have 2 loaders for more ammo work. This additional crew member is practicing with the crew on quite regular basis while still being a team member of the IFV BWP-1 or Rosomak APC of motorized infantry.

@@TheLazyFinn It works the same way in the Polish Army still: - you can't tide suply guys to your positions, they have to go to the next vehicles as fast as they can - you won't take those guys onboard while you change your position - as you can see in video, ammo boxes got about everything inside. (I think you knew it already from way too many instances) That Polish soldier which pulled out powder bags from the cases was possibly the 5-th one. But. Things were changing (a lot) since when I finished my service. Its possible that today the 5-th guy figures out as crew member of artilery unit only on the paper. Do you know the ranges Goździk is used in Finland. Matsimus said about up to 15 km. Which distance is not max range of this self propelled howitzer. BTW. How do you call a howitzer in Your language. In Polish its "haubica". Like: how-bits-aw :)
@TheLazyFinn

@@HanSolo__ We in practice have it so that we are in the position, then when we are moving to next position the resupply point is on the way somewhere and the guys have prepped places for each tank to drive to and take the correct amount of grenades and move to next place, so we don't need a 5th member, basically I parked the tank, hopped out with my commander since our spots are the easiest to exit and we gave the charges and grenades to the gunner and he passed them to the loader in the tower and then put the rest in the back compartment. Then at the next firing position we are given the orders how to prep the ammo, so we take the bags out during that point, if we need to. I think we were told that the max distance is about 15km, maybe like 14,6km, we mostly shot to like 10km, but I think few times at max range and few times to few km at almost max elevation (loader had fun....)In finnish howitzer is haupitsi, like how-pit-se, like sea but without a .

Well, as to direct and indirect fire. The main role of artillery is indirect fire, where the observation with forward observers (which is a dangerous occupation - while it lasts) or a small drone, a radar plane flying at a safe distance. That said: I'm not knocking direct fire - particularly in case of a hostile break through - but concentrating on that means protection is necessary. The defieciency of protection leaves the vehicle unable to follow the tanks: Simply put: If the tanks achieve a break through they will have driven through light forces in dug in positions. Now when the tanks have passed and they need artillery backup the vehicle is vulnerable to the antitank weapons of light forces such as the Carl Gustav. It might be able to scoot forward a fair speed - directly into doom (and the modest ammunition - compared to doctrinial specification) will leave them like a gift that continues to give, as the transport vehicles are only scantially protected. Now, again: I am not knocking lightly protected artillery pieces. Used properly from dug in positions (and switching between positions) is a nifty thing - especially if the enemy obviously plan to expose his bum without trousers.

Has very unique autoloader - possibly the only one, which does NOT - NOT - require barrel to return to neutral position (distinct 'jerk" of barrel after firing). It can reload in full range of gun elevations. There were numerous ugprades - including electronics and ammunition. This is very LOUSY as PRIMARY piece of artillery .... and unmatched neat, small auxiliary stuff to have a battery or two of them.

This reminds me of the Su-76. I'm sure they are formidable in large numbers. I think 122 mm artillery shells are not popular because the 155 mm shells are probably only 10-20% more expensive.
@Mortablunt
@Mortablunt Жыл бұрын
There are some advantages to 122mm, namely carrying capacity and rate of fire. Carrying capacity is important because having more shells available is always a good thing. Rate of fire is important because the side that shoots more is usually the side that wins. Those two things are why the Russians have kept these older systems around and use them so heavily. Given their performance in the positional artillery battles in Ukraine the decision looks very sound.

I always liked calling it the Godiva. Because it's just so sweet and cute. On a serious note. We had a captured Iraqi 2S1 at 10th Marine Regt from Gulf War I. The armor on top of these crates was not much thicker than the roof of a car. You could flex and pop the turret roof sheet metal up and down just by standing and jumping on it. Did the CCCP make an export version?

@@alexnickolaev mate, Sprut is more or less AT weapon for VDV. Do you mean 2S42 Lotos? But there was Vena and Nona for VDV.. They have plenty of artillery proposed. But there's no replacement for Gvozdika at all for military.. Russian military will also purchase shitloads of wheeled platforms for heavy/medium and light mortar platforms that fill the gap for mobility, yet cross country performance might be questionable. But Russian MOD tested artillery capabilities in modern environment and decided that mortars and even more mobile platforms will fill the gap.

Single piece ready primed artillery ammunition is what you want for rapid firing, Having separate shell powder and in some cases a primer as well is not ideal, Having pre prepared or factory rounds of ammunition has the benefit of being able to offer simplified rapid fire with a auto loader.

Not BMP. More like MT-LB with a 122 gun. My father, rise up to a "Gvoszdika"-division head of staff during communist times. He was until, on a morning gather-up he commanded: "Division, fall i! Division attention!" ... and fell on the plats, drunk as a log in front of them all... If he was alive today, He could tell some cool stories!

While the Russians designed a semi-automatic reloading and targeting system for the SPG, the American M107 still reloads and fires manually. The Americans do not seem to care much about artillery fire on the battlefield, which determines a lot more about the damage they inflict on the enemy than the air force, because the US air force cannot always maintain secrecy. dense firepower on the battlefield to suppress the opponent.
