Today, we resurrect a project that has been sitting for way too long, my 1997 Lexus LS400 with over one million miles on it. Famously owned by Matt Farah and driven by nearly every automotive journalist on the planet, it has the most history of any Lexus LS400 on Earth. But this needs a full restoration, and we have just the person to do it - Michael Elsea from Elsea's World. This is gonna be fun!

@@TheJohn8765 I have a W140 Mercedes, the model this car was meant to compete against directly. It's a fantastic piece of engineering and I like it better than the LS400 strictly because it has a lot more character and frankly the interiors cannot be compared, but as far as reliability goes it's not even close.

So glad it’s getting restored, the car deserves it. These 1st and 2nd gen LS cars are some of the greatest cars ever made. I sold mine with 320k miles for $500. And the sad part was it was running like new, just an extra car. I’m still kicking myself.

Even if their stuff is built to last the marketing and business philosophies still apply and they will never endorse a OLD model haha. It's either new or nothing.

The LS400 was my favorite car of all the cars I have owned since I passed my driving test (first time) in 1975. I exchanged my crysler grand Cherokee for it. I have been driving lexus ever since. Unfortunately due to the side effects of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy neck and throat cancer I haven't been able to drive. I love that you are going to save it. I have been following your KZfaq channel for a long time and your enthusiasm is infectious. Looking forward to seeing the final result. I live in the UK but I seem to be more connected to the US since I was 17 and all being well I will be celebrating my 70th birthday on 8th October 2025 in New York and your welcome to come and have a beer. The Lexus LS is NOT a boring car, it’s the greatest luxury car ever made, Toyota engines (especially their V8’s), are bulletproof. And for a car that’s done over 1.6 million kilometres, it still runs well.

I worked as a Lexus Tech for 7 years and im here to tell you that those cars are made to last the test of time in almost every aspect. All you guys are so Leary to push buttons and operate things in fear of them breaking and then shocked when literally everything works besides a power steering issue.

Good, I have a 1991 with the wheels and brakes off of a Series 2 and I love that car. It's on Eibach springs and it handles really well compared to stock. People love to ride in it because it is so smooth and quiet.

I am blown away that a lexus (toyota product) hasnt rotted out with those miles! Our most current toyota disaster has been with my wifes 2009 highlander (its been a handful since 88k). Its maintained on schedule but now, with 112k, it will no longer pass inspection due to frame rot (even with undercoatings). Im done with toyota (except the 4 runner or land cruiser). May have to check out lexus. With an insane amount of miles this 400 is impressive!

I had a 98 LS400 I've had over 40 cars but that one was easily the most reliable comfortable and cheapest to run. We owned it for 10 years used it daily apart from tyres and service item it cost nothing, we sold it for more than we paid. I miss that car..

Smoke out exhaust is likely power steering idle up valve when it fails will feed power steering fluid through vacuum and radio and climate control is under hood fuse box large square fuses to left of box should be second one up
