This Anniversary Edition 1978 Corvette was abandoned for what I'm told is around 20 years. It looks like someone once did a full build on it which appears to be around the last 90s. I'm going to try get this running and back on the road and attempt to drive 750 miles home.

Two years ago when I was caring for my terminally ill dad Derek made me laugh and smile in a way that I still cannot describe to this day. I wish I had discovered his channel before he passed. Since the only TV I get is the at-work break room...only recently did I start seeing trailers for the show. Apparently it was off-season so I happened across VGG here in stead. Haven't seen any of the TV eps since no way to or about to trying to schedule work tasks around seeing a TV show. But from what I've seen just of the odd trailer...these solo versions are more interesting. No commercial interruptions (YT ads notwithstanding) or network time slot crunches... @@marcusaurelius2770

My late father lost his pilot’s license due to Multiple Sclerosis. He spent his airplane money restoring a 25th anniversary Stingray. It was his pride and joy for two decades. Looked like the day it rolled off the showroom floor when he finished it. Countless car shows where he’d sit under a shade tree, sip ice tea and swap stories with other enthusiasts. I’m laughing because I think he fought every issue you fought on this one! 😂 Thanks for the great video and memories Derek 😎

Derek, C3 headlight door mechanisms are designed to go over center and lock in the upright position even without the vacuum motor working. You can push them up all the way from underneath the front until the linkage locks over center of the pivot. If the mechanism doesn't lock in the upright position, you can make a simple mechanical adjustment on the linkage to get it to lock and stay in the upright position. They were designed this way on purpose in case the vacuum motor failed and you had to manually push up the headlight doors from underneath by hand.

@@ViceGripGarage Derek, If the headlight motors fought you when the engine was running and the headlight switch was on, then you have a bad headlight switch. The easy fix for this is to disconnect the small vacuum line running from the headlight switch to the headlight motor vacuum valve in the front of the car in front of the radiator. When you disconnect the hose, the headlights should pop up with the engine running if the headlight motors work. If they don't, you will be able to push them up from below.

Solution to the rear for me is usually a 14 bolt out of a 1 ton truck or van. They're plentiful at the junkyard, usually less than a grand brake to brake, and pretty close to indestructible in a car. They also help put a little weight in the back end, being about twice the weight of the factory rear.

You need to have a revival labeled “with the help of fans “. Get everyone willing to help to send you their name address and phone number and then when you’re on the road and you need a hand or a tow or a ride you find the guy that’s closest and give him a call. Another great episode Jonny. This takes me back to when I was 18 1987 and had a shit brown 850cc which I soon starting trying to make fast and better looking. I patiently waited for a second hand 1275gt engineto come up and sent it up to Mini Land I think, it was in Yorkshire . They bored it out to 1380cc . I sprayed it myself as I worked in a garage, the same red with a white roof, white mirrors and the same pinstripe. The engine went back in with twin 40 Webber's, rc40 exhaust and cooper s discs under 10 inch minilites. It was a flying machine ....around a hundred bhp... Went to all the mini shows with it. Thank you this brought back so many memories of my youth ❤️

Derek, I’ve lived in Ghana, West Africa for the last 15 years working with widows and orphans. No TV or much of anything for entertainment except a few car channels on KZfaq. Watching you troubleshoot and repair the cars on your channel and your positive can-do attitude is very entertaining and informative. Often here in Ghana bubblegum and wire is how we make do until we find the parts so your channel has helped me one, to keep things running and two, keep my sanity through laughing my way through your episodes. Thanks.

@@ViceGripGarage I've worked on several older Corvettes, if they set for long periods of time, the calipers tend to freeze up completely. You'll have to replace em. They are NOT interchangeable. You have to get the caliper for each individual wheel. They were around $80--85 each. You'll need brake pads also. Good Luck, dude.

Watching your long heroic trip home made me realize how lucky I was, flying into Galesburg Illinois & buying a 68 stored Vette and driving it home to Oakland CA. Just a tune up & fluids change plus 2 quarts oil burned on I 80. A lifetime of wrenching still leaves me way short of Your impressive problem solving skills. Sometimes make up for this by great luck, like finding this one owner Vette with 88 K miles in original owner’s garage. Sold it in CA for ridiculous $. I believe we do share a real love for these old machines. That’s probably the source of the good luck sometimes added to our wrenching skills. Gotta know, Derek, when you make such a long highway haul as this revival was, “Somebody up there” really likes you.

Cool that Derek helped the family with the fire. I had a car where ethanol ate through the fuel line, not long after ethanol was first madated as 10% in pumo gasoline, & the car caught fire in a parking lot. I didn't have a fire extinguisher, but a Georgia Power linesman, just happened to have his bucket truck parked beside me, & he put out the fire with his fire extinguisher, before it spread. It could have been bad, because it was a covered parking deck, so I was really lucky. I replaced the fuel line & injector lines w/ R30, or whatever the ethanol proof fuel line is, & I was good to go. ...I always packed a fire extinguisher after that, even if I was in just a regular car, as I was in back then. Had them in my van & pick up truck, but I just never thought of a regular car as dangerous, I guess?

Hi Derek, while serving in the Marine Corps I had this awesome First Sergeant, FSGT Harvey. He was a brutal Marine and later I found out a huge Corvette collector. He had not only this car but when the '83 came out, he had plans I wasn't aware of. On this day, I didn't know at the time, but he asked if I could stick around after the day was through and of course I said, "Yes sir First Sergeant!" He pulled his silver anniversary Vette out on our company parade deck and said get your ass in here Staff Sergeant. We drove to a Chevy dealer and he jumped out, tossed me the keys and said follow me home. I about died! No idea what was going on. Here he came around the corner in the Brand new '83! He pulled up next to me and said if I passed him, if I put a teeny tiny scratch on that car, he would string me up during morning colors. It was the coolest thing to happen to me while stationed at Camp Pendleton. I'll never forget it. Once at his house, I then got the jest of his home life. Every 5th year anniversary car! At the time I owned a 1971 Vette and thought that's why he asked me to go with but in the excitement I never asked. Great find my friend!! I'd love to find something like that to rebuild and bring back to life. Outstanding! God bless, Gunny GySgt USMC Disabled Veteran

I did a similar trip with a 79 vette. Bought it sight unseen, threw some tires on it and drove 1000 miles from New York to st louis in the middle of January. The driver side brake caliper would build pressure if you used the brakes so I had to bleed the pressure off every time I stopped for gas
