Dont touch the ac compressor. It doesnt need to be unbolted to get the tc cover off. 2 bolts broke on mine and i couldnt even remove it. Then i realized i didnt even need to attempt it. Stupid. My fingers are crossed that when i reassemble this that the compressor is fine how it is. I tried prying it a few times and it wouldnt budge so im hoping its fine. Dont touch the compressor. Wasting your time.

For the water pump pulley, you can stick any bolt through one of the vacant holes, spin the pulley and the bolt will "catch" on of the indentations on the motor side, this will hold the pulley still while you break the 4 loose

ATF makes a great engine flush. I mess around with Nissan 300ZX Z32s pretty heavily and they're really bad about getting lifter tick when they get sludged up. I dump a quart of ATF in the oil, drive it around for 20-30 minutes easily and the tick goes away. Then I drain the oil with the atf in it and change the filter. It usually does a really great job of getting rid of sludge. Also, Harbor Freight has a really cheap pick set that's great for extracting dried up gaskets. There's 4 different little picks in the set. They have orange handles. A lot of times they'll be free if you get their coupons in the mail.

Great video. Thanks for the easy to follow commentary. Got to do exactly this on my UK Celica. Think someone below mentioned an EGR and you said exhaust manifold, so will check for that. Just a question about jacking the engine - did you let the engine sit with the RH engine mount before jacking to take out the timing chain cover? Just wondering if it's safe to do that.

In UK i believe all 2zz engines had the secondary air injection system and confuse it as an EGR system. i let the engine sit without the rh motor mount. all 3 transmission mounts can hold the engine

What gaskets, parts, etc, do you recommend replacing while doing this job?
@andrea981
@andrea981 3 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial! You have helped me a lot with this. I have to do the same job to my 2004 Celica ts. It is leaking oil in the passenger-exhaust side corner. The valve cover probably is leaking in that corner, but maybe the chain tensioner or/and chain cover are leaking too. My drive belt tensioner is stained in oil too, and when I start the car the belt squeaks a little for a minute or two (I think some oil fall on it). For making this job on my car I have to take out the exhaust manifold too, and since in your video this part is not needed, can I ask you some advise on it? If you have any tips & tricks or things that I should watch in taking out the exhaust manifold, can you please give me advise? For example, are the bolts easy to remove? Should I replace the exhaust manifold gasket too? If I should replace the gasket, should I just put in the new gasket and place the manifold on , or there are some things to do first ? Are special tools needed? If you could make a video about the exhaust manifold would be awesome, but any advice is appreciated. Im a little scared about the fact that the exhaust manifold is quite deep inside behind the engine, and I hope I can reach (maybe it is easier if I lift up the engine with the jack a little?). Thank you again !

Super useful video. One tip, loosen the 4 water belt pulley bolts before you remove the belt, that way you don't have to grip the pulley to get to loosen them later. I wonder how different this process is for euro cars that don't have the cruise, but instead have the stupid secondary air injection system?

One tip not many know. The extra holes in the water pump pulley are so you can stick a long bolt or allen key through them to prevent the pulley spinning while removing the bolts.. just in case anyone is reading this after theyve already taken the belt off :)

Thank you for doing close-ups of the bolts, assuming yours is correct. Too bad you didn't measure them, I ended up counting the number of threads from your video to make sure that single bolt is probably 20mm (also based on MWR website). Because many of us are the second or third person in there and somebody pretty much mixed up all the bolts before me. I was shocked to find different lengths of valve cover bolts scattered randomly across valve cover, ignition coil, water pump, and timing cover.

Hey :) i m a new fan of your channel. I had no idea about vvti . From a video i saw on your channel u said the " lift " activates at 6k rpms. And the oil needs to be ( x) temperature. This web page indicates that engine coolant also need to be 60 degrees celcius too. So yep. Also, i m kinda shacked about the " lift" at 6k 🤣🤣🤣 I never ran my gts anywhere 6 k for any period of time long enough to activate the lift. So have i been missing out??? Lol i just i m kinda surpriced. I had no idea how vvti really works. Fan fact i learned from scotty kilmer is that " the higher the rpm the faster the engine wears out". So i kinda avoid the hi rpms therefore did not know about the lift. I will .... maybe try it ? What does it feel / sound like when it activates. Lol. Also, do u happen to be in california? Where r u located. I m wondering if u could refer any decent mechanics for future refrence. Any way thank you for making your videos. Sinceraly, santa.

DEFINITELY will get worse. Oil will get into alternator and short out, could cause engine fire.

I'm doing this same job on my 2zz xrs. The timing chain along w/ rest of the timing chain accessories appear to be in good condition still, but should I go ahead and replace those anyways since the cover is now off and accessible?

You dont need to remove the ac compressor! Don't try it! The 2 bottom bolts broke on mine, so i couldn't get it off, then i realized i didn't even need to attempt it. The ac compressor is a completely external bolt on. The crank position sensor wire runs between the ac compressor and the block but u don't gotta remove the compressor. Don't end up screwed over like i did. When i put this back together im just hoping that it'll hold its place good enough or i gotta remove the condenser and the bumper cover to be able to come straight at the broken bottom bolts for removal. Potential nightmare. Hopefully it dont need it. DONT TOUCH THAT COMPRESSOR. THANK ME LATER.

@@2zzlow Yeah definitely. I've owned a 82 Celica myself back in the day then traded up to a 85, then 97 Supra. Went from there to a Nissan 300zx, i turned into a show car for 19yrs. Also had 86 Mr2 and 87MR2 Super charged. Currently on 2nd MR2 spyder with Tein Electronic Suspension and Garrett turbo with Greddy piggy back ecu and much more. Not my 1st rodeo lol. But love to see how other do stuff before I dive in. Saves a lot headaches sometimes. Great job btw! Still waiting on New MR2 release, they prilly make it electric if Biden has his way. Geezzzz. If only folks could see the cruelty of the folks mining these metals for the batteries for electric cars. Batteries that would cost a fortune to recycle and very difficult to do as well compared to gas burners which are 100% recycled and much cheaper to do. But they don't talk about that do they?
