It's time for an ICONIC ENGINES episode on Toyota's rev-happy 2ZZ-GE engine.
The 2zz engine started it's life in 1999, building on the base created by the 1zz-fe engine just two years before. But the engines share very little with each other. The 2zz engine is the performance variant of Toyota's zz engine series, which was made as a replacement for Toyota's very popular and successful A series of engines. The A series spawned the legendary 4age engine among others, and the 2zz can be seen as the spiritual successor to the 4age. But if we compare the 2zz-ge engine to Toyota's older performance four cylinders (2tg, 18rg, 3sge, 4age), we will see that the 2zzge is different from all of them in that it has an all aluminum engine block, compared to cast iron blocks found in the older engines. Cast iron blocks are great and almost never go wrong, and Toyota as a car manufacturer usually prefers simple, beefy, high-mileage resistant engineering solutions that are very unlikely to develop faults. Cast iron blocks are one such piece of engineering and this explain why Toyota was slower to abandon them in its four cylinders compared to many other manufacturers. But times were changing, and Toyota had to make a more modern, lighter engine, and so the zz series of engines got an all aluminum engine block.
The 2zz came during an interesting time for Toyota, but one that can be described as somewhat sad for car enthusiasts. The mr2 mk2 (sw20) had turned from a turbo powered monster into a, perhaps better handling, but much tamer naturally aspirated car that was the mr2 spyder (zzw30), the legendary supra was also almost finished with it's production. The Prius hit the market in 1997 and over the next decade on so Toyota would be focused on developing the hybrid system and making it's cars cleaner and more fuel efficient. But Toyota wasn't ready to give up the sports car just yet and the 2zz engine really reflects the spirit of the times. It was fuel efficient and clean but also really sporty, fun and rev-happy.
So what about the specs? When looking at the specs of the 2zz engine it's very useful to look at it side by side with the 1zz engine. The differences between the 2zz and the 1zz reveal why the 2zz performs better, makes more power and revs higher. Although, upon first glance, the engines look very similar they are in fact very different, down to their bore and stroke. The 2zz has more bore and less stroke. This means it's better at revving higher, and also has more space for bigger valves so it breathes better and makes more power. This also means key parts between the 2zz and the 1zz are not interchangeable. You definitely can't take a 2zz head and put it on a 1zz block. The differences continue in the rest of the engine. The 2zz has very light internals, forged connecting rods and light cast pistons with a special low-friction coating. The variable valve timing between the 2zz and the 1zz is also different. The 1zz engine gets a more modest version that, in essence, only affects cam phasing. The 2zzge vvtl-i system is much more advanced and affects both cam light and cam duration on both the intake and the exhaust cam. Incidentally, the 2zz was Toyota's first engine to receive the vvtl-i version of Toyota's variable valve timing technology.
All of the differences between the 1zz and 2zz add up and the 2zz makes on average 50hp more than the 1zz depending on the particular engine, vehicle, market and tune. The 2zz-ge highest factory power output amounts to 190hp, while the 1zz highest stock power output is 130hp. So the 2zz makes more power than the 1zz, it also makes more torque but only marginally more, with the difference in torque being less than 10 Nm. This is of course due to the fact that the 1zz has more stroke than the 2zz engine.
So what are your options when tuning a 2zz-ge engines? Well there's a bit of sad news on that one as the 2zz-ge doesn't really have a stage one. The 2zz is sort of already "tuned" from the factory and your typical bolt on mods won't really do anything, and will often result in a power loss rather than a power gain. That being said, the 2zz is a great swap into older, lighter, more analogue Toyotas. The Toyota Celica, Matrix and the Corolla were already getting heavy by the end of the 90s. A 2zz in an aw11, ae82, ae92 or even an ae86 makes sense. It's lighter yet more powerful than the older engines so the results are usually very fun! the 2zz is also a super popular swap into the mr2 spyder. But how do you get more power from the 2zz? Do what lotus did and bolt a supercharger onto it. Supercharger kits are still available for the 2zz. What about a 2zz turbo? You can do that too, but you will need new internals or a brand new engine as step one, and turboing some of the older Toyota engines is actually a bit easier.

Learn your variable valve history. Sorry but Honda wasn't the first game out there. Variable valve timing has been a continuous evolution since Man took flight with most aircraft engines using it since the early 1900's. Fiat was the first automotive manufacturer to patent it and the first production car to use it was an Alpha Romeo in 1980 beating out Honda by 9 years.

@Sergio Aguirre thats right bro, at that era most japanese car marque have their own (sort of) variable valve "lifting" which basically is another cam profile, nissan have their neo VVL, mitsubishi have their MIVEC (early mivecs are cam profile-switching), hondas with their VTECs, toyota with their VVT*L*-i, those were the golden age, and i miss that. 90's ~ 00's

Oh Honda k engine must be build by jesus it must be the only engine in the world. The only engine that revs must be the only engine that produces power. K20 2.0 200 bhp. Nissan sr16 ve 200 bhp 1.6. Honda overated. Start to think for yourself.
@ardyshane23
@ardyshane23 4 жыл бұрын
Kevin Jones Most k series motors make about 220-230 whp with the basic bolt-ons. The sr16ve and sr20ve were both awesome motors, but still not nearly as good as k series Honda and still probably inferior to the b series Honda. There is a reason Honda motors are so popular, just like there is a reason the LS series motors are so popular. They very easily make tons of power. The same cannot be said for the Nissan VE motors. The sr20ve with n1 cams, intake, good header and 3” exhaust will hopefully make close to 200whp, often just under that. The k20 will make 230-240whp with the same mods all day long. Both great motors though, and a ve will be finding its way into my g20 soon hopefully.

Their research showed that people prefer torque for everyday driving, so they made a bigger engine. Honda did the same thing with the Civic Si which is also kind of sad. High revving four cylinders are just too hardcore for most people and they want to sell as many cars as possible.

The first engine I know of to use MMC was the C32B in the 1997 Honda/Acura NSX. Honda termed it "Fiber-reinforced metal" or FRM for short, and it was needed to increase the V6's bore to increase displacement from 3.0 to 3.2L displacement. The F20C in the S2000 also used an FRM block. I'm not sure of which other manufacturers employed the technique.

The valve sizes are larger than typical because press in valve seats aren't used. The aluminium seat is "laser clad" giving it a thin sintered finish. This was pioneered in 1997 on this engine and has been continued in later Toyota engines. MMC durability Vrs cast iron depends on your market. In the USA, high sulphur fuel creates acid during combustion at low engine temps. This tends to strip off oil film resulting in accelerated wear. In Europe or Japan the far lower sulphur content does not result in chemical attack so bottom end durability will match expectations for km's driven. MMC seems to have only been used in the 2ZZ allowing an "over" bore without increasing the bore center distance. MMC was later used in the Rav4 hybrid front brake rotors where the weight saving is significant. The Elise S1 had MMC brake rotors all around but returned to cast iron on the S2 update due to design flaws.

I just towed home a $500 Pontiac Vibe GT with this engine. The compression is good, but it likely needs a head gasket due to the low amount of coolant and high amount of oil, and reports that it “gets a little warm”. I’m eager to get it sorted and back on the road and revving high. I learned from your video that it is very important that it be warm before it sings the song of its people. I should also look into putting a 1zzfe oil pan on it and that fancy billet oil pump gear at some point. I would imagine that it also likes wheels that are very light. I’ve never seen anything cheap in a field with a K20 in it, but I would also be happy to flog one of those if I find one.

Thank you so very much for your video! The way you explain makes me smile. And it would be great if you make a separate video on 4A-GZE. As for 2ZZ-GE - in Russia it is known as engine for - let me call it - 'performance, not mileage.

Most engines will be hurt by overrevving bc they're interference engines, over revving will cause valves to slam into each other, the case here is that the factory oil pump was not made to rotate any faster that 8600 rpms, there are aftermarket pumps for that.

Well red line is 8500 and the rev limiter should help but i did miss shift once All i could hear was the rev limiter causing the engine to chatter away as it hit about 8800 until i hit the clutch and dropped power

About 5-7 whp can be gained from indexing the spark plugs. I've seen it on a celica gts I was working with. An indexing kit isnt that expensive, and worth it since those engines are hard to gain power with.

Great Review !!! But even better (and comical but excellent) narration . I really do enjoy watching you videos. Your explanation is so energetic and comical, but it revs up the curiosity and increases the want to know more compression. I had a lecturer in collage that thought natural science. Now, as with most people, you will completely loose me with science and math in the first second. But, with that lecturer, he did it with so much enthusiasm and energy and flair, i just wanted to know more, and all of our marks where really excellent. You remind me of him. Thank you very much. I really do enjoy your videos, and your "energy", and flair !!! Please do keep it up. Take care and catch you in the next video.

Great video men! Could you make a future video, explaing us what is the common sense about engine tunning stages? ☺️
@d4a
@d4a 4 жыл бұрын
There is no common sense :) Basically stage 1 is bolt on stuff ready made in the aftermerket. The things you can do without getting the engine out of the car. Stage 2 is engine out of the car, mods that increase power significantly but still keep the engine streetable. Stage 3 is obscene power level stuff that pushes the absolute boundaries of the engine's capabilites.
