It's great to see you again, Thomas! Those pistons are a mess. I wonder if the owner used the wrong oil for that engine?

The biggest culprit is probably short drive cycles. That low mileage points to nothing but grocery trips. Gotta get heat into them.

My guess as well.

Is this the case of an over due oil change? Or is this not preventable? Thanks!

2013 Q5 Supercharged 3.0L V6. Dealer recommended service history. By the time it got to us it was an oil burner. Our early oil change service & additives had no effect... so it's time to dive in deep.

Is that the oil ring? Doesn't work too well when it's filled with junk. Good video. Happy Motoring.

It sure doesn't!

HOLY WOW!!!!! This is insane. I wish this was together so we (you) could test some Berrymans soak on these.
@EXOVCDSАй бұрын
Berryman's is not sold in Canada. I've been meaning to order some from the US. Not sure how long it would have to soak to cure those type of deposits. If my revenue / occupation were youtube based, it would be a nice experiment to undertake.

@@EXOVCDS You once sent me stickers for my Passat and helped me solve the issue with the transmission. That car served me for over 5 years bringing my family all across the United States on several vacations and then ultimately all the way here to Maine from Utah. That sticker traveled with me and every time I got in the car I looked at it. It was the one of the baby with the headset on. Anyways it was all weathered and cracked by the time I gave the car up and I scraped all the stickers off except for that one. Reply with a PO box and I'll send you some Berrymans. It's the very least I could do.

@@EXOVCDS I soaked my 2 l FSI rings because the compression was trash. It completely restored my FSI. And I mean completely. I poured 2 oz in each cylinder, 6 hours apart for 24 hours. After getting rid of any residual liquid in the cylinders and replacing the plugs and coils, I started and ran the engine with what was in the crankcase that passed the rings. I let it run for about 15 minutes. I did an oil change with cheap Walmart dino oil. Then ran it for 15 more minutes and replaced that Walmart oil with Castrol Euro. The car is like brand new maybe I just got lucky but it's incredible.
@pauliroha5506Ай бұрын
How can one prevent this? A Castrol oil with spec. 5w40 (A3/B4) can it be substituted with a Castrol 5w40 (C3) when the former is not available. Thank you. As always, your videos are very educative.

Hey Thomas, cheers! Thank you for a great view of bad situation. Was this specific to certain groups of engines? Our '05 3.0 BGN seems okay, but I've only had the heads off to replace the leaking head gaskets at 130K. Cleaned the cylinder heads and piston tops but it wasn't sludgey.
@EXOVCDSАй бұрын
All engines have this as a possibility... short distance stop & go driving is the main reason (IMHO). I don't know the ring design of all VW & Audi engines, so I can't say which engines would be more prone to this from day one. This engine, as well as all the 2.0L chain engines up to 2012, have oil control rings with TINY holes. It doesn't take much for these holes to plug up and then oil burning / usage increases quickly. If your 05 isn't using much oil, keep doing what you're doing. Thank you for watching!

What would be the reason this happened? lack of oil changes or just being used for short trips?

Dealer recommended oil change interval & short trips would be my guess.
