I also draw a vague pattern kinda like what it came from on a piece of cardboard and punch the bolts into the drawing about where the bolts would go on the part. There's a few other tricks I use but that's the main one.

With Google and KZfaq you'd be amazed at what the average Joe can accomplish these days. Find some junk and take it down to bits. Another way to learn is by helping some friends make a mess out of their things lol. But the two most important things is to get past analysis paralysis. Matt @ Sloppy Mechanics has some great videos on dealing with this. Last but least is know when to ask for help when it comes to safety issues.

One point on the injection pump, when you take off the front cover plate behind the injection pump to remove the three bolts it makes no difference if the engine turns. The pump will only go back on the gear one way. You are right to mark the pump housing before removing the pump.

Be careful with that gasket tack stuff. I usually only use it on one side of the gasket/mating surface because I've had it actually rip paper gaskets while tightening stuff together before when used on both sides of the gasket.

Great video very informant, I recently bought a Catterpillar 416, it has a 4.236 Perkins less than 1400 Hrs. it starts and sounds good, but I found water in the oil, so now it sits , I found out later it overheated in 2015, they replaced water pump but than it wasn't used much, it set for 7 years the oil pan froze and cracked, so in your expert opinion my question is where else could coolant be leaking from besides the head gasket? Because it started and sounded so good, but i won't start it anymore. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

¿what is that thing below the alternator? At first I thought it was the starter but it has two lines and it looks geared to the timing gear train. Is it the fuel lifter or an air compressor?
@stevefuller1779
@stevefuller1779 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure I agree that it matters about engine position when removing re-fitting the DPA pump, it turns at half crankshaft speed, same as the cam and is keyed to the gear, the is not enough cleanance in the timing case for the gear to jump so you can't get it wrong, I've removed and refitted hundreds without bothering to even check the engine position, never had a problem. Love the vids by the way even if you do blow up Detroits for fun.

Do you spray both sides of the gaskets with that spray-a-gaket? And is there a situation where you don't use anything on the gaskets? (how about with large "oring" type gaskets like the 6.0 powerstroke uses on the front and rear cover?) I'm self taught, and this is something I always ask myself when working on tractors and trucks.
@southjerseysound7340
@southjerseysound7340 5 жыл бұрын
You can but most guys use it to just hold things in place. If you want to do both sides they make the same stuff in a brush on form that makes less of a mess and is great if you've got a less than ideal sealing surface. Just be warned if you do both sides it is a B!tch to get the part off and you could easily break a big aluminum cover like that. So for this reason I only use it on both in RARE cases.

I developed a system recently, because yes I'm that heretical Ford guy who actually works on his own stuff, that simplifies labeling of connectors. BTW, I'm pretty sure Honda is a worse culprit for the same connectors issue, but I digress. You label each side of the connection with some blue tape and a black sharpie with A-Z, then 1-infinity, BEFORE you disconnect it ("A" on one side, "A" on the other, then pull it apart). Makes it really easy to get them back together and isn't super time consuming. I used to label them using words about where they go, like "coil" or "throttle body", but that was really cumbersome because of space constraints and time-consuming because lots of letters. Labeling both sides with the same letter makes it just go back together like LEGOs and is quick and easy. No thinking required when you have high cognitive load.

Quick question, i know the common rail cummins’ have a tendency to ruin their injectors because they need an improved fuel filtration system over stock. Would it be a good idea to get one of those additional filtration systems? Or will that cause extra stress on the pump?
