We have casted 3 fire ant mounds in this video. They all turned out great. The largest and smallest mounds were vacant and we wanted to see what those castings looked like. Amazing results!
More large Texas fire ant mound sculpture videos coming soon.

Your channel came across my feed and I had to check it out. Great job on the pours. They look fantastic. The big one would make a really cool Christmas tree. I have my own channel where I melt trash and pour ingots, coins, sand casting, and other things. I am actually going to pour my first ant hill tomorrow. If I can beat the armadillos, I have at least 6 ant hills I can pour. One has a big surface area. Might try to do them over a period of time. Will take quite a bit of time. Some do not have water close. Great video. I can't wait to watch your other videos and can't wait to see what y'all do next. Keep up the great work.

We really appreciate your kind words. Good luck on pouring your ant mounds, I hope it goes well for you. We have a few mounds to pour and video coming up, but will be starting a video series on building a new furnace. Ours has worked great for 5 years, but is starting to show its age. Plus we want to build a bigger furnace to cut down on the pours. The only downside to our current furnace is not being able to get it hot enough for brass and copper. Our ultimate goal is to pour a massive ant mound with copper and make it shine.

@@antznpantzcastings That will be cool to watch. Can't wait to see it. I was not able to pour the mounds yet. The armadillos got 2 of them and we had over an inch of rain that we were not supposed to get. Mother nature changed course on us. That is ok though, we could use the rain. Two of the mounds showed some activity today in opening the tunnels back up. Hopefully, this next weekend I can pour a couple of them. Good luck. Can't wait to see what you do.

Gotta dig like an archeologists to get all the off shoots they usually dig. I see you prying the shovel towards it and just ripping it out of the ground and I cringe. Lol but they still look like beautiful art. Good job

@coololdluke3905 - I hear exactly what you are saying. We do take this into consideration and sometimes we break off pieces that we wished we hadn't. Sometimes we dig like an archeologist. Sometimes we are pouring and digging as fast as we can. Each pour is different. We never know what we are going to get until we dig it up. That is what makes this an adventure. Thank you for watching our videos!!!

What diverse pieces. What would have made the large one become abandoned? Where these all created by the same species of ant? Looks like you guys had a very productive day! Nice job 👍🏻!
@antznpantzcastings
@antznpantzcastings Жыл бұрын
@enaidyeltneb369 - Thank you! These were all from one ant species. The fire ant! Mounds are abandoned when a queen dies. Fire ants don't move into old mounds, they just create another one. The large mound had been around for a while and ran over with a lawn mower many times. Because the queen travels all over the mound laying eggs, she could have been at the top when the lawn mower ran it over and most likely killed her. All the other ants in the mound die off when this happens. Thank you for watching our videos and supporting our channel.

Nice work. You don’t seem to be losing much detail in the dig-out. Hard to tell I guess. When you do multiply pours I would guess that the metal isn’t welding together further down as much as it is intertwining and mechanically locking. It may remelt up near the top where you’re pouring, but down further, probably not. On your large ones, have your helper come in with a scoop or tongs right after you’ve finished pouring (30 seconds or so. It’s a timing thing) and pop off the mushroom cap while the metal is still gummy. That way you’ll be more sure to keep the holes exposed for your next pours. Subbed.

Thank you! We don't lose much digging it out. We occasionally break weak pieces off during the dig out, but for the most part the sculpture is more durable than it appears. On multiple pours the aluminum bonds close to the surface, but you are correct about further down. The aluminum cools off too quickly so it intertwines with itself to lock in and stabilizes in lieu of melting and bonding together. We have tried removing the cap on top between multiple pours, but found that leads to a weak bond between the sculpture and base. It eventually breaks off and we are left with mounting the sculpture to wood or some other type of base. The best solution we have found is to vacuum off the top and open up many holes. We divide the open holes up into sections and when we pour we try to keep each pour in that section. We really appreciate you watching and your feedback.

If that was steel could you pour it one handed like that? I mean would it be much heavier?
@antznpantzcastings
@antznpantzcastings Жыл бұрын
@MrWednesdayRC - Awesome question! Steel is much different than aluminum on melting points. There is a 1000 F degree difference between the two. The pot we use for melting aluminum is made of steel and would not be able to hold up to those temps. The weight difference is not as much of a problem as the temperature. It is sometimes painful to be that close to this type of heat.
