Solid tips. These are things that are easy to ignore. Beginner produces will often focus on their sounds and mix while ignoring arrangement. Heck, even I need to be better about the first two tips (arrangements and transitions). Have fun everyone and make something you typically wouldn’t once in a while ;)

Gain staging is making sure the source signal is loud enough for the next plugin in its chain and not at all with its relation to other instruments. Back in the dawless days if you didn’t do this you would introduce a lot of noise to the final sound because there was always a noise floor with analog equipment.
@soyjuanfz
@soyjuanfz Жыл бұрын
yeah but there isnt in a daw lol
@aboliguu1168
@aboliguu1168 Жыл бұрын
@@soyjuanfzit doesn’t matter that daw’s don’t have noise. Gainstaging is still gainstaging and not level balancing. Also analog plugins, saturation plugins and compressor plugins (basically plugins with nonlinearities) all care about the input gain so gainstaging is still needed.

Here is a tip i wish i would have known sooner: less is often more Human ear can only focus on 3 things at a time. So make only 3 main sounds for example: lead, bass, drums And every other sound exists only to support them Only one instrument can be in the same place in the freaquency spectrum. Meaning if you have to overly EQ to make it fit in, you have made a mistake. And if you have to constantly add more stuff to ur track for it to sound good the core idea is bad. It needs to sound good in its most basic form. Dont add reverb to every single mixing channel but makr one mixing channel for reverb and route all the instruments trought that channel for all the sounds to be in the same space. And also makes you have more control over the reverb Dont get egotistical... be always ready to learn more. And dont judge other peoples work.

What I do: -Select an scale -Do a chord progression -make a loop that sounds good as main loop. -expand the loop... That's your drop. -Do a verse following the chord progression. -Do a build up connecting both verse and drop -Do a break that connects both Drop and Verse/Build up.

There are better and worse way of doing things and anything could work, in my opinion you need to think about if the thing you're adding is changing up the soundscape in an interesting way, or if it's just a tiny thing that compliments the existing arrangement. If it's the latter there is a risk it just sounds boring since the arrangement is not developing in any meaningful way

This is true I’ve been recording and producing music for a decade now it’s only been the past year or so I’ve been confident in what I’m doing. In my experience the best thing to do is to work really hard mastering your skills for 2-3 year and then put it all to practice as much as you can. Work with musicians and get feedback from others. The BIG game changer too is to use reference tracks listen to the volume, width, tone everything and if the song is similar to the one you’re working on then copy it. Try to get your mix to sound as close as possible and then you will start to learn how to mix and master properly. From a creative point of view just try stuff, reverse guitar parts, automate a massive reverb on a vocal for one powerful word. Work hard and experiment, don’t think too much about it and if it sounds good it sounds good. Sending love from Glasgow ❤
