Hey guys! Sorry for the crappy audio, we shot this quickly on an iPhone... BUT! I got a lot of questions about each individual component of the Buchla system from the previous video. As usual, things change quick in the studio so I wanted to get this one out before we publish videos of it in action. And don't worry, those videos will have high quality audio so you can hear it in all its glory. As usual -- leave questions below! Thanks!!

where is this studio located ? You seem to move from one studio to another but you never mention in which studio you are ? Perhaps you could edit the website and location of each location ? Also, since you are in the Netherlands, is there a way that fans can approach you physically, like a meet and greet ?

Now you need a FOURTH 24 panels boat!!! 🎉 Love this video. It’s VERY useful because a ton of people get very confused when they (try to) get into Buchla. I know, that was me about 18 months ago. This video would have been a goldmine of information. I love my Buchla so much… but it felt overwhelming. Have fun!

I've been programming synths since the earl 80's. This to me is like miniaturizing yourself and jumping inside the circuity of a Hydrasynth Deluxe or a Novation Summit and start re-routing things at the micro programming level. Sounds like my version of a Wonkasynth.

It may take one (yeah right) or more years to learn how to patch it and even if you'd know it inside out, you'd have trillions of possibilities. When you have something cool you can be 100% certain there's something much cooler hiding in there. So how would you define 'done'? It will provide many hours of quality time - with no useful results - so I can't help wondering how you'll get production value from it. I guess you'd create your own sound library and work from there. It would be super cool and extremely useful if you'd share how it integrates in your workflow as a composer.

But the synthesis engine is west coast. So more additive instead of Moog which is subtractive. Filters are much less in the picture, the complex oscillator can create spectacular harmonics all by itself. But it is not as easy to manage. And indeed, it always makes you feel that there is more lurking beneath the surface.

That's quite a system. I had once 18u of 200e. 3x24u seems a bit of overkill considering that one of the main USPs of 200e is the preset management system. So there should be no need to triple systems when working on multiple patches at once. Probably the reason why he did this is because of systems lockups. 200e is quite buggy. Filling big (original buchla) cases with 200e modules only, you will likely run into system freezes. Super annoying. From a pure sound perspective, there is nothing you can't achieve with Eurorack system. I've been there and know what I'm talking. Especially since there is 292t and 296t from tip top. Of course there are some nuances, but the oscillators 261e and 259e aren't that special. I always prefered the raw sound of the 258e (DPO) or the easel oscillator over these. It's a matter of taste I guess. The only thing that I'm really missing is the 223e tactile controller. This thing is unmatched in modular world and by far the best tactile input controller for modular out there. I'm wondering why there is no keen, studio-h and soundfreak stuff in his case? Especially the CSR? By far the most exciting modules in the 200 format. Unfortunately Buchla seems to not extend and develop the 200e range any further.

Tom, cool video! I enjoyed this. I've got three questions for you. 1. How do you feel the Buchla compares to your previous modular gear in terms of play-ability and experimentation? 2. In terms of aesthetics I think Buchla is really up there. I've never seen one in the flesh, but to me it looks playful and inviting. Unlike say MakeNoise, whose modules are fantastic but their aesthetic is too busy and messy for my tastes. After all your years of working with hardware synths, is how synth/modular looks still a significant factor in how you approach a machine? 3. Buchla systems are notoriously expensive. Prohibitively so, for most people. Part of that is that Buchla is a small company catering to an exclusive crowd. But what makes this system a worthwhile investment for you? Other than that you had not mastered this system yet. In other words, what makes this premium instrument worth the price of admission (for you)?

Yes it feels like a totally different world. Its amazing. I’ve never felt as inspired as I have for the last 18 months since I started building my own 200e system. You can do a ton with just a few modules. The Easel Command + a 218 controller or even a Linnstrument or other USB midi controller will take you into a brand new world. Don’t need much more

I’ve been a bit of a hardware synth enthusiast for the past 12 years and finally took the great Buchla plunge earlier this year. I started with an Easel, then quickly began building a 24 panel system. I feel like I had to relearn synthesis on the Buchla. It’s a completely different and almost alien approach but I feel it’s actually taught me more about synthesis in one year than the last 12. It’s one of those instruments where you let it guide you to your destination.
