Mossy Oak to me is the clear winner. I collect knives. And I was a butcher 30 years. And to me its the only one of them I'd be happy to put on my belt.

The Mossy Oak doesn't work for people with large hands. It's a good knife. It goes by multiple brand names (Mossy Oak, Swiss Tech, Flissa). They're all the same knife, likely manufactured or distributed by SZCO. I've seen the guy and finish on both the Mossy Oak and Swiss Tech, which are identical. For people with small to medium hands, they're good. I have XXL hands. I literally can't grip the knife solidly without thick knife gloves.

If I ever delve into making custom handles, I'd be inclined to practice on one of these low budget models. Nice to know that those edges can survive the test. Every truck should have one.

These would be great for honing the skill of handle making. I might choose the SZCO because it has the better sheath. All of these would be usable blades for self defense or just a beater. Appreciate the comment. Happy New Year

I plan to get the SZCO knife at some point, as a project knife. I'll fix the loose S-guard problem, (which seems pretty common) and put some new wooden scales on it, maybe with screws instead of pins.

Entertaining video for the regular knives us regular guys use on regular stuff. While all three are cheap, the classic Western style Bowie such as the SZCO is a gotta have in any Americans collection. Several manufacturers make a copy but a cheap one sharpens as well as a more expensive one. Your one in particular needs to be sharpened.

Thanks for the tough testing of these budget bowies. I own a number of these types of bodies. They have held up well only needing some sharpening. Of course the more expensive bowie blades hold their edges longer.

Nice review. I give it to the Mossy Oak. The pommel damage was from another knife hitting it during the throwing test. I have other Mossy Oak knives that perform well too. The brand appears to provide great value and performance. I have the SZCO bowie. It sharpens up very well. A good beater blade.

I have procured about 4 of the szco Bowie's. A buddy and I did some test cutting w a year or so ago. While targeting a bottle of water it flew out my hand and hit a cinder block wall next to me on the tip...it didn't break (?) They are 1090 carbon steel. Amazing. * They lend themselves to custom modding nicely as well.

Some people may find these tests ridiculously overkill, but in all honesty: Have you ever been out in the bush clearing trails and keep them clear year after year after year? My grand dad has bowie knives he bought in the 70's... never sharpened, pretty much always in use for hacking, chopping, carving, skinning, food prep, you name it, and they still hold up to this day. Sounds unrealistic right? But go out there and try to find some well made knife from the 70's and earlier and you will be enlightened. I don't see ANY Becker BK7 or Gerber, Esee, CKRT, Cold Steel, SOG or what ever they all are called, doing or withstandng that when we look at these "hard core tests" done to them on KZfaq. When you put them all to the test in these "hardcore tests" they maybe simulate really just a couple of weeks or months of usage the way my grandpa does in real life and are not the unrealistic overkill tests you may think they are. Basically saying, a lot of bushcraft enthousiasts out there are pretty much FOS when they claim they really do some tough work with them botaning for their little camp fires once a month, but they mostly are just in the usual gear tuber realm and try to sell you sh t without acutually having any clue about what a knife needs to be able to withstand in real life. There, I said it.

BTW, this is a fact many knife reviewers either don't know, or they don't disclose (I'm definitely not making accusations). The SZCO company, either manufactures or distributes every inexpensive large outdoor/self defense knife on the market. For those who like knives, I'm 100% positive you've come across identical knives, that are marketed under a different name and manufacturer. Those knives are exactly the same, and they all come from SZCO in some manner. If you see an identical-looking knife to the popular Timber Ratttler Outlaw Bowie Knife you want, buy the one that costs less, because they're identical!

Think I'm gonna pick up a SZCO bowie and save myself about 80 bucks over the Cold Steel Wild West made in India bowie. They are both W49 pattern with large brass S-guards. I slightly prefer the 1090 carbon steel of the Wild West over the SZCO 420HC, but not 80 dollars more! I am not seeing that same sheath though. The ones I see have a similar black leather sheath, and the brass handle scale pins are beefier on the ones I am seeing for sale today. Thanks for the review, and I wish I had your winter temp problem!

Love the way You test knives . Your tests are a great way to test a Bowie knife. You and Donnie B All Day really put knives through serious testing . Don't knock cheap or budget knives they can do as much as a high dollar Bowie will. Can you depend on them for survival the answer is yes . I carry a Timber Rattler Bowie with a 10.5 inch blade and have used it in the woods and lots of other things . It holds up to a high dollar knife and I think I paid around $ 25.00 dollars for it . John you say your in Texas . What part ? I'm from a small town in N.E.Texas called Timpson

The SZCO high carbon Bowie will perform better than the other 2, if you're willing to put in some work. You'll probably have to remove some rust, sharpen the blade, modify or replace the handle scales, and JB-Weld the guard to the knife. I know, I have 2. But, when it comes to taking a beating, the other 2 Bowies don't compare to the SZCO. The sheath is okay. It'll do the job, but having a Kydex sheath would make sense. You might ask "why make an expensive Kydex sheath for a cheap Bowie knife?". The answer is: no inexpensive Bowie knife can compare to the performance of the SZCO high carbon Bowie. If the handle scales break, buy another one, sharpen it, and put it in the same Kydex sheath! They're so cheap and functional, who cares?

The brass pummel IS brass. Brass is very forgiving and malleable. It likely got the dent when you struck it with the other blade when throwing them. No knife handle is invincible when being struck by another solid hard object at speed. Come on, they're all cheap by design, and worthy of punishment, but something is going to break when they're mistreated.

@ Fit 4 Knives - Are you 100% positive that Ridge Runner Bowie has a plastic liner in the nylon sheath? I'm asking because I bought one about 2 years ago (maybe longer), and it was just a cheap, thin nylon sheath with rivets. I returned it for that reason. I actually quite liked the knife. It was a good size blade, and had a large grip for guys with big hands.

Take it off and put some proper glue or find some longer pins and rivet them or thin the scales and rivet the original pins. If you find some whashers you can peen the pins on you get extra points
