In this video, I compare three bushcraft knives from Morakniv: The Mora Companion, the Mora Companion HD, and the Mora Bushcraft Black. These three knives are very similar (and all of them are great budget friendly bushcraft knife options), but each knife has some subtle design features that make them unique. Definitely a good one--simple and fuctional in design. I also think there's something about how inexpensive it is that helps people actually USE the knife without worrying about scratching it or breaking it. The more use a knife gets the more familiar it becomes which increases its value and usefulness.

I started with the companion. And because I did find this video too late, I also bought the companion HD. For backpacking, I'll stick to the companion. It's lighter and fits my hand better. The HD is good for people, who have larger hands and pay less attention to blade abuse. There is also some attachment to the first companion, that keeps me from switching. I took the time to grind the back of my companion to a nice sharp 90° mirror finish, that works well for making wood wool and use a fire steel. And it's the one I learned to use best. Since I got it, my 3d printer catches dust. And a lot of scrap wood looks like it wants to become something useful.

I keep the Companion in my "10 Essentials" kit when I go hiking, along with a Swiss Army Knife Huntsman. Between the two, you can handle most out in the woods knife tasks if the need arises. But, when I go on a multi-day backpack trip, I take the Bushcraft Black for its superior capability. It's always comforting to know you have a quality tool when you're way out there in the woods.

I was just out with my companion and a Swiss Army knife the other day. I agree-it’s a nice and capable combo (and light too). Like you though, for certain trips, especially if there’s a little more of an unknown element, I tend to carry something with a little more tough (even though I rarely end up needing that extra toughness).

As far as I'm aware, the bushcraft black, although a rat tail three quarter tang, is a bigger tang than the others. That was the marketing hype years ago when the bushcraft black first came on the market, which is why I bought it.

Great video. The value of a non-full tang knife has been downplayed in the West by those who don't know how to use a knife as a knife and an axe as an axe. I own all three knives and they work. For a time Morakniv made their red wood handle classics with less than a full length tang, that was a mistake in my opinion. If it is not going to be full exposed tang (end to end, top to bottom), I do prefer hidden tangs to go the full length of the handle. many Northern countries use what is commonly called a rattail tang leaving the handle full wood with no contact in cold weather with the metal tang. I find the handle on the HD to be a bit odd, the palm swell should be more in the middle as it is too near the front. Bushcraft Black has a perfect handle for the blade.

The only time I've seen any Moras give out is the ones used over and over on bushcraft course's and if they're owned by the inexperienced or idiots. My first, a HD is a disgrace to look at and has been through hell but it still works fine.

I only have one, the bushcraft black and I do have a new one, but I've never touched it. I'm pretty sure I get at least another season or two out of it, I teach bushcraft and I literally use it everyday of the year for either bushcraft or farm work, and I've never had an issue at all, it's solid , sharp and intact. I have sharpened it a few times, rarely nore then a strap, occasionally a but of stone work, but never much and I mean I am rough on it, I have started using saws more lately and an axe , I do teach how to use the knife for everything, but I've also shown unless it's absolutely a survival situation, be prepared.

Nice comparison, all great options, well explained. I prefer the 511 basic for camp/general use, the shorter blade just feels more nimble and the 2mm stock is freat for prep, like the Companion. It's hard to beat the value of any of these, and modding them becomes fun too.

Yeah, the 511 is very similar to the Companion, and another great option. That was my very first Mora I ever owned, and I loved it. I actually found it in a forest when I was a kid. The knife was without a sheath (probably why it was in the middle of the forest), so I took it home and rigged it up with another sheath I had laying around. It served me well for several years, but then I lost it to the wilderness of the Kenai peninsula. Maybe someone else has found it by now and the story continues--ha! Never lost a knife since though, so I guess the lesson was learned.

Each of the 3 have their unique features that make them what they are, but like you, I end up using the Companion way more than the other two. If ever I’m needing something with more “beef,” I reach for something that also has a full tang. But for most tasks, the companion does great.

I have the bushcraft black. It has become my do-everything knife. Good in the gardens, the orchards, the workshop, camping, and fishing. I also know hunters who favour it. My only complaint is the scandi grind has a tiny micro bevel. Not a major issue, it comes out quick enough on a water stone. For the money, there’s not another knife in its league.

Was using the regular HD as I liked the closeness to the work the shorter blade allowed but got a Mora 2000 and it was just about right, liked the thinner blade stock, the handle and the chisel grind. Got the Bushcraft Forest with the same handle as the Bushcraft Black and wasn't thrilled with the bigger finger guard and the M2000 just fits my hand better and if something works for you then run with it.

Yeah there's a lot of knives from Morakniv that I left out by only reviewing these 3 knives. I might have to do another video some day that covers a few other models as well. And I agree with you about the Bushcraft Black--the handle is a little...different. I like the knife for a lot of reasons, but there's a certain bulkiness felt near the finger guard. It still works just fine, but kind of works against you when using anything but a basic grip (it's subtle, but its something worth noting, for sure).

On Moras hompage the regular companion is rated with 2,5mm thickness. But it its the stainless version. The carbon version is rated with 2mm. So the stainless would kind of in between.

@@AdventureRyan I own a companion and it is my "go to" for backyard wood processing tasks. I have baton'd that knife more than any other I own and it is performing fine! With the exception of no coating on the blade, I think n k its one of the best $25 I ever spent.

My favorite for all general tasks is the mora robust. It can really a beating and like the button connecting option. If they made a large robust (4.25-4.5”) with a slightly longer handle it’ll be a perfect duo

I use the HD companion for Bushcraft but my son uses the robust. I got it for him because he's only 11 and I like the more dramatic finger guard on it, so he doesn't slice his finger off.

To me if I was going to spend more money than the companion HD I would go straight to the Garberg so now I have the HD and the Garberg in stainless and I love both but my Garberg is my favorite

That's kind of how I feel as well. I haven't yet used the Garberg, but it definitely has a lot going for it and checks a lot of the boxes for what I like in a woods knife. The Bushcraft Black is a nice blade though. Now if the Bushcraft Black was full tang like the Garberg, and priced the same as the Garberg...that would be an interesting comparison.

Great review. Thank you for sharing. My own personal preferences: *1. Eldris *2. Kansbol 3. Companion 4. Companion HD * The Bushcraft I haven't tried yet. It's my next purchase. * Neither the Eldris nor Kansbol were mentioned in this video. For me, I do seem to reach for them more than my companion and companion HD, especially the Eldris. Never would I have imagine that a 1.5" blade would be a goto knife for me. Cheers.

Thanks for commenting. I haven’t worked with the Eldris or the Kansbol yet. But I can relate with you reaching for that smaller blade a lot-one of my most carried knives ends up being my little Izula 2. There’s definitely situations and tasks where longer blades are required, but a small blade gets a lot done and rides light.

How much more would a Mora knife cost if it was full tang instead of partial tang? Maybe $2 more? Why is everyone afraid to ask Mora; "why can't you make your knives full tang?" Does less tang give better balance to the knife? Is a partial tang "a feature"?

Morakniv actually does make full tang knives. The “Garberg” and also a line of knives with ash wood handles. And you are correct to assume that there are advantages to a partial tang knife. In terms of balancing the knife, while a partial tang knife can potentially shift the weight distribution, I haven’t noticed much in terms of better balance (mostly because partial tang knives tend to be smaller blades intended for lighter tasks) but I definitely notice the blade being lighter in hand. A lighter blade moves easily in the hand and reduces fatigue during long sessions of work. A lighter blade is also something I look for when I’m trying to keep my pack weight as low as possible. So in my personal opinion, lighter and less expensive is what a partial tang offers. Some people need a full tang based on their use or preference, but if not-lighter and cheaper is always nice. I will add that while Morakniv does a great job fixing their handles to their partial tang knives, not all companies do. Some cheap blades will become loose from their handles even with light use. This is another benefit of the full tang-it’s just easier to secure the steel to the handle.

I can see getting the Companion if there is an ergonomic issue. But it seems to me that with only about a $4 difference between it and the HD currently on Amazon, it's a no-brainer to get the thicker HD. Then maybe it's a matter of price again regarding whether the HD is enough or if you want to spend an extra $32 on the Bushcraft model. Based on this, it doesn't really seem like it's worth the extra money, so I feel pretty good about getting the Companion HD. It's nice when decisions like this seem easy. I'll go into analysis paralysis just like the next guy on these small things. I'll buy about any car put in front of me, but if I need to get a knife, I'll break out some spreadsheets to figure that bastard out.

Haha! I like picturing all those spreadsheets out. But yes, the HD kind of hits the best of all three knives with the extra durability and the low price. It really comes down to personal preference over which features you prioritize most. As far a function, all three of these knives will get the same sort of jobs done. The variations between them are subtle (but just enough to make the spreadsheets flow).

It holds up pretty well against rust, in my experience, but once you sharpen it the sharpened edge will be exposed carbon steel and that portion will need to be care for. Personally, I don’t find that to be much of a problem because as long as you’re using your blade and honing it from time to time, any surface rust won’t build up. Also, you can easily wipe of the surface rust with some steel wool or sometimes even a scouring pad and not have to worry about scratch lines on your blade since the actual sharpened edge of the blade will always have scratch lines on it (unless you’re a mirror finish kind of user). Bottom line, the DLC gives a durable form of protection against corrosion without making your steel thicker and while still allowing to you have all the great benefits of a high carbon steel.

Great review. I assume that you left out the Garberg because of the higher price point but I think the Kansbol and the Robust Pro are great options to consider as well. The latter is particularly compelling given its sub $15 price point.

Thanks. Martin. And yeah, I left the Garberg out because I wanted to focus on these more budget-friendly options. Morakniv has a lot of models that fit in this category, of course, but these three are all very common ones and I thought they deserved a bit of a breakdown. I might do another video in the future comparing a wider range of Moras--like the Garberg, Kansbol, or even the Edris. Would that be a good idea? Or would "thumbs down" my video for it? Ha!

There are definitely plenty of reviews of the Garberg on KZfaq but knife junkies like me would always watch another one! You could compare and contrast it with cheaper full tang options like the Condor Terrasaur. I own both and have thoroughly used and abused both and have found the Terrasaur to be every bit as capable for half the price.

They all have their pros and cons. I do find the Companion carbon 2mm to be the best slicer. The Companion's slice better than the Bushcraft Black / Buscraft Survival Desert. This has to do with the sharp angle on the blade of the Bushcraft . The Companion's have a more smooth angle (scandi to flat part of the blade). Thus slide easier through wood. All have extremely comfortable handles, the Bushcraft has the finger groove. I like the Companion/ Pro series handles better.

@@AdventureRyan The Mora Companion carbon , and Pro C are my favorite Mora's at this very moment. Thin slicers, carbon steel. Sturdy enough. Really good knives. And all very affordable and reliable knives. I do have preference for the carbon versions. But when working on a boat. fisherman etc. The stainless would definitely be a better choice.

@@spitchgrizwald6198 I noticed this with the Bushcraft also. The difference is immense. It has also to do with the sharp angle from the bevel to the flat side of the blade. It has a really sharp corner that causes drag when cutting through wood. The Companion HD does better right out of the box than the Bushcraft black, is my experience.

@@spitchgrizwald6198 Btw.. how do you convex them? On stones, or the sandpaper soft backing system. I use a sanding block with the spring clips, it has a somewhat softer backing, but not as soft as the mouspad. Works well.

Once you sharpen the bushcraft black the dlc coating will come off the scandi grind

The DLC coating is pretty tough. And yes, once you sharpen that scandi grind enough the coating/treatment on that portion will be gone and that steel will be more exposed to the elements. However, if you’re using the knife regularly, it often keeps the rust from building. Also, since it’s the edge and it already has a “scratched” surface from sharpening, you don’t have to be worried about protecting the finish there and so you can easily wipe away any light surface rust with a rag, scouring sponge, fine sandpaper, fine steel wool, fine sand from the river edge… But if corrosion is a big issue for you because of you location (humidity or salt water…) you still might prefer more stainless steel option.

I have a Hultafors OK4. I got it for $22 on Amazon. It was much cheaper then the bushcraft black. What gets me is I paid $50 for Garberg. I wanted a backup. Everyone always raves about the bushcraft black. I'm starting to believe youtube is just a long commercial. People act like you must get this. Yet when you dive in. Most don't even use their knives ( judging by the blade they show with no scratches or sharpening marks). The other crowd seems to get free equipment. Anyway the black cost $5 less then my Garberg. I got the Garberg because it's stainless. I wanted a no maintenance blade for river camping and winter. I also wanted a carbon wood monster. Seems Mora uses gimmicks to raise prices. The 511 is still $9 and is very sharp. The Hultafor is sharp but not like I like. I want Lazer. Just saying you might wanna give the Hultafor ok4 a try $22 is worth a try. It's got a sharp spine if that's important (I use a scraper) it's got a 3/4 tang it's about indestructible. My other knife is a BPS adventurer they are a deal at $38-40. I don't think they are going to stay that cheap. They are leather to that has its downsides as well. But they are beautiful leather. The sheath is worth the price of the knife. You won't believe until you actually get to hold one. Anyway nice video great points. I agree I'm just offering another alternative as well.

Thanks for your comment. You made lots of great points here. I also get annoyed by how artificial most of the reviews are out there, and I try my best make my approach different--more real, for one. And yes, I also agree with you that the Bushcraft Black is far from the only good knife in its price range. And while I do feel the Bushcraft Black has some solid features that add value to the knife, it also brings the price point up enough to make other options worth looking at. This video was made primarily to compare and contrast three very similar knives from Mora. I purposely use other knives from other brands here because I was trying to add a little clarity as to what these three knives have going for them and what there subtle differences are. Thanks for you recommendations on the Hultafor and the BPS knives. I hope to do a review in the future comparing the Bushcraft Black with the Garberg (although I don't own the Garberg yet, so...waiting on that).

The Garberg 80 euro is in The Netherlands twice the price of the Bushcraft Black 40 euro which is my favorite. Near perfect knife. As I do like the Companion carbon a lot also. It's mostly about preference. A 511 can do a LOT. No discussion about that. But I do prefer the Bushcraft Black. The handle , the blade. Yeah.

@@Ve-suviusyou should try the BPS adventurer. I can't recommend it enough. After buying one it's hard to justify what mora claims. Bps had the best edge I've ever gotten on a knife. The steel is just as good the sheath is unbelievable. I'm not a fan of leather. I do a lot of fishing in the woods so I prefer kydex but there leather is extremely well done. Just saw you comment from a few months ago and I just wanted to share what I've found to be amazing.

@@richardhenry1969 Good that it works for you. Though I do prefer synthetic handles. Not wood. I'm fine with Mora. Perfectly fine. The Mora 511 is under 10 euro. There are higher priced Mora's as the Garberg etc. What claim of Mora is wrong? What do they claim. I can't see what you're talking about at all. They are fine knives and praised by many who are knowledgeable. Also a lot in use with carpenter's and men who use their knives as tools for a living.

Best knife for me would be a Mora Garberrg with a Bushcraft Black grip...used both ones and they should melt those together

@@AdventureRyan well if you combine those two...a very strong knife like the Garberrg and the Superb grip of the black you get a winner. Yes the Garberg grip is not so nice as the black..I hear more people about it. So I thought the design could be upgraded in this way

Hello , late at picking up on your great video (have subscribed). I have a question for you ; have you ever tried to spark up a fire by striking sparks from the back of the bushcraft black , with a piece of flint ? If you have how was the experience ?

I haven’t tried hitting actual flint with it, only Ferro rods. But it’s high carbon steel and sharp at the edge so it should work. If for some reason that protective treatment gets in the way you could hit with a bit of sandpaper to bring the raw steel out.

Blade thickness for Companion is 2.5mm, not 2.0mm.

I’ll have to do some more research on this, but I believe the high carbon steel model (the one I reviewed here) is 2.0mm, but the stainless steel model is 2.5mm like you mentioned.

Some people find the bushcraft black to not be worth the increased cost, but it really comes down to which features you value in a knife. The bushcraft black definitely has some unique features, and if those fit how you roll, it’s a great knife.

Ha! Just did a quick Google search and it turns out I was unaware of this starchy reference used to criticize the cameras used in filming. So now that I’m up to speed, I’m sorry that the quality of the film wasn’t high enough for you. I use two different cameras for my filming and shoot both in 1080 HD. I’d love to upgrade my camera gear as well as the computer I use to edit my footage as it currently struggles even with 1080 and crashes with 4k and up. But alas, you get what you get for a free video. I’ve always worked hard to provide the best videos I can with what I have to work with. With my knife reviews, it’s my goal to provide honest reviews based on real experience with the knives. My approach comes at a cost of not being able to build my channel’s views and subscriptions to the level that I could if I cranked out hundreds of unboxing videos or backyard cardboard cutting sessions. I’m fine with this, because this is my channel and this is what I want to share. But if you’d really like to see some higher quality, video footage, I’m sure I can find a way for you to donate to the cause. In fact, jump on that “super thanks” option and you can be an active part of removing the roots and tubers of my filmmaking.

@@AdventureRyan the rest of your videos are fine, but this one for some reason, when i try to click on quality, it says unavailable and is greyed out, i Apologize if it sounded like i was completely degrading your work, its just it was a bummer to not be able to see the video clearly, ive tried watching it on my tv and laptop as well and they all say unavailable where the quality adjuster is

Thanks for the clarification. Thanks weird that it won’t let you adjust the quality. It works on my end for some reason and should give you the 1080p60HD option. Which if that’s not selected you would definitely be getting some potato-like effects. I’ll check around with some other viewers and see if they’re having the same issue, but like I said, it appears to be working on my end. Thanks again for the clarification.

I have a couple of Mora's, not knockin the knife nor the owner but from my experience in combat and survival it is reserved for lite duty!

Agreed. I have a bit of experience in both those areas and that’s not how I’d prefer to use these knives. Bushcraft and camping are where I like to use my Moras. If it’s what I had on me when a trip becomes a survival situation, I could make it work. Combat-no (everything breaks in combat).
