I bought a Zero Water filtration system and test the water regularly before watering. I have hard water testing the water from the tap. The meter reads between 165-185 ppm. I put my water through the Zero Water Filtration, and the TDS meter reads at zero. My plants are alive and waiting for temperatures to rise so I can leave them out overnight. The temps are not stable yet here. Also, buying distilled water from the box store is getting pricey. Going with the Zero Water filtration system was a no-brainer to save money.

I could not agree more. For collections more than a plant or two, buying distilled water just doesn't make sense. It's hard to find and almost 1.50 a gallon now. The zero pitcher is a no brainer for me too!

Been watching your videos for a few months and following your uploads and I want to let you know this is probably the best Carnivorous Plant care channel on KZfaq/the internet! About two months ago I started growing varying kinds of drosera and multiple flytraps in a Vivosun tent and Vivosun light(which surprisingly works amazing and made my Lowe’s rescue traps turn from light green to a vibrant maroon color) and you’ve helped me out A LOT with little yet very helpful details not many other growers talk about. I live in the southern tip of West Virginia and there’s literally nobody around me that grows these plants that I was able to learn from, so figuring out the specific things I needed to do based on my location was made so much easier thanks to you. The dormancy tips you have in some videos have me better prepared now 😅 I hope you start selling plants soon bc you already have a buyer waiting here buddy!! Keep up the fantastic work 🌱

My memories are similar. Although, I was a little older. 15 or 16. I even remember my mom trying to help me but neither of us had a clue. We have access to so much info now, probably even too much at times. It's much easier to learn care than back then.

Yes!! If someone with a small collection asked me if I could only give them 1 tip, the zero water pitcher would be it. Great investment. You can get two filters for 30 bucks. That should last you years more!!

I stopped acclimating them a long time ago. I realized that i was just delaying the inevitable. I realized that the plants acclimate faster by just putting them out in full sun and letting the sun scorch the old growth. The plant will be faster to put out strong growth. I’m actually in the middle of doing this and I’m documenting it on my page. Good info!!!
@CarnivorousPlantsHub

I've actually lost plants, (usually big box rescues) when I expose them to full sun. Especially if it's during mid summer. I've also had the new growth recover, so I know what yoir saying. However, often times it's these people's first and only plant. I think it's a good idea for them to acclimate instead of just leaving and hoping. I completely understand what you're saying though.

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I wonder how much location plays into it. I’m in NC zone 7b. I’m in the process of saving 36 lowes rescues for bat I put in my in ground bog as a foreground plant. Even though it was January and February the original foliage all burned off. I honestly thought I lost them since I transplanted them mid winter but I’ve been slowly seeing the. Reemerge 🤞🏿🤞🏿🤞🏿. I’m actually tracking the batch of 20 so that I can measure how many of them actually recover
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 ай бұрын
I would imagine area is an indicator, but also probably conditions the previous plant was in. The longer it goes without light, the more shocked it will be once exposed. I think there are a lot of factors we can't control which is why I usually lean toward acclimating. You will have to let me know how the 20 rescues go!

Oh and I’m in Arizona growing a sundew and Venus flytrap. My advice for the 115 summer dry heat. Little to no afternoon sun is needed. 3-5pm is when it gets hottest here and at that point the plant is just cooking from my experience. I got a Walmart Venus fly trap to live for 3 years before I started buying from actual growers and every summer the 3pm-5:30pm sun just cooks them

Love ur vids man and I agree with the light thing at 9:02 u can tell the plant needs light desperately. And if they would leave it outside for a week they’d know it needs more light. When do flytraps usually flower? Mine didn’t flower last year? Should I expect them to flower this year? I’m going to cut it but I’d like to know lol Thxs!
@CarnivorousPlantsHub

They usually flower in spring. A flytrap that's struggling might flower at strange times though. They will flower if they think they are dying. Their last attempt to carry on the family name before they croak. Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate them so much!!

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks a lot legit after this I started to see a flower forming! For better and more aggressive growth you would recommend cutting it right? I want to really grow it big this year so I’m thinking of cutting it. Also since you have seedlings growing I’d recommend doing a test seeing if cutting it actually grows faster. Like one you cut every year one you cut every other year and one you never cut would be cool to see! Also just a bunch of tests like fertilizers and stuff would be awesome to see Thxs again!

The Zerowater is good in the beginning but into6 months the filter suddenly degrade to 150 ppm. It's not filtering more even filtering 2 times the same water (I have 245ppm here). I find that I will rely on rain water and using the ppm tester now
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 ай бұрын
Yes, the filters do not last forever. You can buy replacement filters. If I had u limited rainwater, I'd go that route but I don't. Which reminds me, I need to upgrade my rain collection system! You can get two filters for about 30 bucks, I get over 40 gallons from each filter, so the cost compare to buying distilled water is much reduced. That's 80 gallons for $30. That's about .38 cents a gallon, I can live with that!

If it's enriched with fertilizer, you need to repot. Rinsing it won't be enough. You would have to rinse it a lot... I'd recommend just repotting. I will be selling my soil shortly! Hopefully in the next couple weeks!

Hi, I bought my first VFT a week ago. I live on an apartment with north and west facing windows. I've been keeping my little plant on my window sill in my west window. Should I still buy a special lamp for my plant? Will it be OK in the west facing window? I live in Western Canada on the Prairies, it gets pretty cold here but it's spring here now.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 24 күн бұрын
It's unlikely that a west facing window will provide enough light. I'd recommend a good grow light on a timer. Let it have like 5 hours a night after the sun stops shining through the window. It's a slow death and hard to really see at first. But, low light will eventually kill them over the long term.

I bought one last weekend. Moved it from the death box to a small plastic pot with sphagnum moss. I let it outside for an hour and it went full limp. I checked the rhizome, looks healthy still. Is it a total loss or should I be patient and keep the moss damp?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Ай бұрын
Venus flytraps can suffer from repotting shock. It's not uncommon for the older existing traps to fall over limp after repotting. I wouldn't worry too much. Watch for growth turning black rapidly. As long as the new growth coming up seems healthy, you should be okay and it should make a full recovery!
