Keep sundew definitely not for beginners. It's dyind without any reason, even watered by less then 10ppm water. Neither fungicide helps to stop rot on drosera. The dionea or pinguicula, are more or less capable to survive at beginners bands.

I definitely disagree here. I have a cape sundew growing in almost all my planters. I actually have to "weed" my planters all the time to get rid of these. I wish I could stop them from just popping up all over the place. They grow with my neps, pings and flytraps.

So.... Everyone says it -has- to be outside, but... can I have it inside and have it survive? Because our winters get very very cold, suck as below degrees...... and its not at all very bright here since its dark most hours of the day in the winter time.......

My darling Carnivorous baby Gertrude is doing better and better everyday, soaking up the sun, meeting other plants outside, and now growing new baby podlets!!! "She's" going to be munching bugs soon. I'm watching "her" closely everyday; I water her as needed (usually every two to three days but that will likely increase as the temperatures and amount of sun increase!!). It had been raining almost everyday where I live, and some days for Gertrude were spent in the house under the Gro-Light. The Gro-Light isn't as good as the natural sunlight but you do the best you can. Nor did I want my darling inundated with lots of rainwater and exposure to long-term chilly temps (especially at night, when it would routinely dip into the low 40°s. Okay, I don't want to bore anyone. I just wanted to sound off on my lovely Carnivorous one as "she" enters, finally, her next rightful phase of life: thriving. It was a struggle early on, with lots of fretting and worrying on my part. My girlfriend bought her from Lowe's, brought her home, and we set it on the windowsill. What did I do next?? Thinking that "she" didn't look so good, and wanting to help, perhaps giving "her" some water would start some rejuvenation. So I poured about 1/4 of a small bottle of MINERAL water on "her". That helped - NOT! You get the idea!! Great work, Marty (Sarcasm! And, yes, that's me!)! No, things didn't get better,...not right away, at least. I'd say once I admitted to myself the next day that I'd better research care for Carnivorous plants or be a failure and kill our/my plant, things gradually turned towards improvement, towards health! I had to become very educated about these magnificent and unique kind of plants - I made sure I got my fill of information and more. Heck, i'm still learning!! Acquiring the water tester/meter was key for me - there's no assuming your Zero Water pitcher is working (mine isn't/wasn't! Not for what my Gertrude needs!). So I bought some distilled water and will continue to do so. And, yes, I tested that, too, before I watered my plant! Always check unfamiliar water with your meter - it's quick and easy to use (thank goodness for that!)! I'm grateful for sites like CPH - a source of great knowledge, given out thoroughly and clearly. Thank you so much for your expertise, enthusiasm, and willingness to help newbies like me, sir! There are other great sites, too, but CPH, here, is truly top shelf with information on all Carnivorous plants. You can tell our host loves what he does, and he loves his plants just like I love my *Gertrude ❤ (*Yes, I chose her name. It just popped in there the instant I saw her!)! And my darling really is starting to look great. It's been about three months since I've had her and the best is yet to come, without a doubt! I'm just so proud of Gertrude's resilience; I know now "she's" going to turn out great, and i'm excited for "her" future!! I will write another update in a month or two. Growing Carnivorous plants is fun & rewarding, and I recommend it for anyone looking for a worthwhile project! Best wishes to CPH, and any and all involved in this beautiful endeavour! Onward & upward, everyone! -Martin and Buggles

How do you mantain the correct level of light for the nephente ventrata? If i put her out of my house her pitchers start to burn if i put her inside she dont grow idk what to do 😢

They prefer more indirect light. If outside, don't put in direct sun for more than a couple of hours.

Thank you for the very helpful information. It's greatly appreciated. I do have one question. Can the venus fly trap be potted with succulents?
@ThirstyBacon2 күн бұрын
Excellent for the flytrap except theres no nutrients in the potting material. Or else they would stay and you would have a start of an ecosystem.
@ThirstyBacon2 күн бұрын
Edit: maybe us growers could add a pot of soil that's in the VFTs pot. One that's Impermeable. So bugs could flourish but also be food? Fast food if you will.

That grasshopper was far far to large for that trap. I feel like you knew this but you still did it. Thats not a typical variety so i would love to see the whole plant. It must be a good one because you dont mind wasting a trap on a weird ass grasshopper.

Ya, it was a bit too big. Once the trap closes, I usually let nature take its course. The plant was fine. It also helps to educate people on what happens when a trap catches an insect that is too big.

Bro ever since I got my Venus I’ve watched all ur videos and it’s thriving now not the greatest shape but it’s came back after losing most of it to sink water 😢 and drying out but ever since I started using spring bottled water mixed with a little bit of organic lemon concentrate juice it’s came back with new shoots and in full sun. I have a question on soil tho I got some from Amazon not what u have in the description but wanted to see your opinion it’s made by perfect plants, it’s called organic carnivorous plant soil.

It’s hard to tell but it looks to be a gauromydas hero which is the largest insect in the direct fly family. They are also known as a mydas fly.they can get to about 6.5 centimeters or 2.5 inches long. They originated in Brazil and are quite common in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, colombia and various other regions. Also don’t ask why I looked this up. I felt bored…

I believe it’s a Cimbex femoratus or a birch sawfly I saw a caterpillar that looked similar so I think they lay eggs in the ground during winter and come out during the summer

How many hours of artificial light are you giving your Pings? Maybe the laueana under lights is in dormancy due to day length. Or maybe it just makes smaller leaves in high-light conditions.

In this video you mentioned you plan to top water the cuttings monthly. Is this the only watering method you are using for these, and are you really only going to have to provide water ONCE a month? Would you recommend having a small amount of water in the tray, or would the closed lid + humidity provide enough moisture to keep the soil moist for a whole month until your next top watering?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub4 күн бұрын
No, definitely not. In the video I talk specifically about watering. While propagating, the tray is always full. I never let these dry out at all. Always extra water. I only top water once a month to help settle the soil around the cuttings.

You might not want to plant flower stalks more than 1/2" deep since you'll get plants burried too far below the soil line to grow properly. I've noticed that the baby plants will strike anywhere the stalk is dark. and you can leverage that behavior to give them the best start. I also strongly prefer the vertical planting approach over horizontal since you have more control on where the plants strike and it's a more efficient use of space. One thing I consistently struggle with every year is a grey fungus that shows up a couple weeks into the process. Not sure if you have the same problem but I'd be interested in hearing how to handle fungal control.

I've cut off some of the flower stalks from my VFTs that seemed to be doing a bit more poorly. Definitely went lazy method and just stuck them in the soil next to the main plants. I don't expect much to come of them but they're still green. Could you do a video on manually pollenating VFTs? I have a few different types and I wouldn't mind getting some seeds.

Oh no! Depending on thr age and size of the plant, it can put out multiple flowers but they usually grow at the same time. You'll likely have to wait until after dormancy.

I've never had success with VFT stalk propagation in soil. Depth and orientation haven't changed the outcome of rot. I have accidentally succeeded to propagate VFTs with false vivipary by allowing dormancy-free mature plants to grow monster stalks in spring. On the other hand, I have unending success with sundew propagation from both leaf, stem, and stalk cuttings left under grow lights or sun in small distilled water containers. I'm curious to see if VFTs will work just as well. Either way, I've been taking your advice for a couple years now. Many thanks.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub6 күн бұрын
Right on! Not sure which method you are using but try giving them more humidity. This gives the flower stalk longer life and allows it longer to start growing from a node. Thank you for supporting the channel!

I have my plants in sphagnum moss. Do you think that the plants would thrive more in a substrate like yours? Also, what depth of pot do you recommend? Thanks.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub6 күн бұрын
For propagation or for adult flytraps? Sohagnum moss is a great substrate. My biggest con is it dries out too quickly. If you are on top of watering, it's a great option!
@qontoh2s8726 күн бұрын
I have three flytraps that are over two years old. Purchased as gimmick "pets" for Halloween. I keep each one in a one gallon aquarium. None of them have ever gone dormant. They bloom almost every three weeks. Which I usually cut after they reach 2" tall. All three are thriving on a diet of isopods. Which I feed about every two weeks. One isopod to a plant. Also, I water with tap water usually aged for two days. The light source is a full spectrum LED reptile/fish light that's kept eight inches above the tanks. I have no idea what I'm doing, just winging it but it seems to be working. They've tripled their original size. I do worry about them not going dormant? I have tried lowering the temps and lighting to simulate winter but they just keep growing. Thank you for the tips on propagating. I have tried the lazy man's method but the stalks either break down or turn black.
@brightbkh076 күн бұрын
I’ve heard from a reputable nursery that they will do fine skipping dormancy for a few years (3-4) but then will suddenly die. You can find videos on here about using the fridge to induce dormancy. I would definitely look into that because everyone says they have to go through dormancy and it sounds like you care about them a lot and wouldn’t want them to suddenly die. Also, your tap water is probably not safe for long periods unless you live in an area with almost no minerals in the water. Even if there are minimal in your water it will build up in the soil over time. I use distilled water and rain water only.
@janstewart20416 күн бұрын
Also they’ll divide before they die
@CarnivorousPlantsHub6 күн бұрын
The more I dig into this topic the more I agree with Jan. I don't think the mother plant is the one that lives when skipping dormancy, I think it divides and the new plant lives. No one I've ever seen or talked to has been able to provide a shred of evidence that a flytrap will outlive no dormancy. I'd recommend it, but a lot of people swear they never do. The problem is, the people swearing only ever have anecdotal evidence and nothing ever concrete.
@janstewart20416 күн бұрын
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I’ve only skipped one dormancy only for tiny tiny vft. Also same size plants I put into dorm do well also
