I know I've done this already. I did a video last year about it but decided to throw the same part on my car.
-
I haven't made my mind up about what exhaust to get, though the #2JRacing GR Corolla exhaust is at the top of that list.

In the meantime, for anyone who wants to keep the stock exhaust and its look (and there are a lot of people who do), the resonated mid-pipe is a nice, subtle option for increased tone, sound, and a bit of power.

WOW! I can hear the difference through your video, must sound AWESOME in person. Mahalo (Thanks) for doing the video as you DIY, I don't think I'd be able to do that. I must say, I was laughing at one point as I could feel your pain going under the car. Me think CarQuicks needs QuickJack!

I was wondering if the video would convey the difference, but it does. One benefit I've noticed after is highway driving is almost... quieter? The tone is much cleaner now so highway cruising sounds really good.

It really does! I recommend this to anyone wanting some more sound, but not liking or wanting large aftermarket exhausts.

I think you’re better off just cutting out the secondary cat. The resonator on this mid pipe is unnecessary in my opinion. I personally had my secondary cat cut out and welded a pipe in place for about $130 at my local muffler shop. It was a slight reduction in weight and small increase in exhaust note.

I actually already been down that road with a friends GR Corolla. Sound is a preference thing, so while I think it sounds terrible (so did he), I can see some people being ok with the sound. For me, after initial startup and driving for a few thousands miles we both opted out. But if that method works for you, all the better that you saved money and are happy.

So both pieces kind of work in unison. - For example, I just did a video on my channel a couple days ago, installing the MST Performance downpipe. However, looking at the piece some could argue it’s more so a high flow cat. This car is designed where after the turbo, you have the downpipe/high flow cat, vbanded to the back, a mid-pipe and then the exhaust. - With that you have 3 sections and they can be separated mainly for sound. The midpipe adds a nice tonality and aggression to the stock exhaust, improves flow and paired with a proper exhaust would benefit from a lower side. - Now throw in the down-pipe and it’s added power and sound and completes the system. You could get one pieces from the turbo back, to the the exhaust, or for an easier install run it as 2 pieces like I’ve done.

I may have missed it but any significant weight difference between stock and the 2j midpipe?

The OEM midpipe is heavier than the 2J-Racing midpipe, weight savings feel like a few pounds, nothing extreme like a titanium piece.

So you only re use the back gasket correct?

Yes. The gasket connecting the OEM exhaust is re-used. The gasket to the downpipe is replaced.

I'm not running the THICC BOI shift knob, but that was mainly due to not wanting to burn my hand off int he summer. The lockout I still run and love it!
