Glad you went out from KL city and traveling to east coast for more quiet and relaxing time in Kuantan. Those who are nature lovers, should be happy to see the greenery scene mother has to offer. It's totally different from the west coast and yet, beauty and richness of flora and fauna and beaches are splendid, marvellous. Feel like seeing Miami beach but it's not. More beautiful, clean beaches and you can have your sweet time alone/privacy. Thank you Andy. Cheers.

Hello Taylor, thank you so much for taking us along! It reminds me of rural Santo Domingo which is where I am originally from. If you wish to see beautiful beaches and taste fresh seafood that's one of the destinations I recommend and the price is rather cheap since the dollar stretches a lot, its 58 pesos to the 1 dollar last I checked in September when I went. This made me want to visit Malaysia even more!

For the East Coast, it is hundreds of miles of undeveloped beaches and mostly concentrated in the state of Terengganu. Correction: the larger beach portion is in Johor not Terengganu. But perhaps Terengganu may have slighty better beaches due to the lower portion of East Johor is closer to the busy sealanes.

Lovely, was wondering whether in the future you could consider interviewing the big people at Universities or in business in Malaysia to ask some of the harder questions about living in Malaysia. For example, retiring as an expat is a lot different from a local retiring in Malaysia because most Malaysians cannot afford retirement. What is the job market like for expats compared to locals or the prospects of being in business as a foreigner? Hard talk is not as much fun as a trip to Kuantan but may be useful to the over 40's and 50's who cannot quite retire yet but want to set themselves up in Malaysis

Thanks for the trip Andy. A bit like stepping back through a time warp, as downtown Kuantan and the Hyatt look little changed from it last century. We did the drive from Penang to Cameron for a couple of nights, then to Kuntun for a couple of nights, up the coast to Kota Bharu for a couple of days (A bit too long there) and back to Penang (a lovely drive). If someone really wants to experience Malaysia, I would suggest starting in K.L or Penang and renting a car and and doing the that route. One of the pluses of visiting or living in Malaysia is that it's perhaps the most easy, affordable and relatively safe places in Asia rent a car and explore. I loved having a car in Malaysia and some of my fondest travel memories were driving in Malaysia.

In 90s.. Cherating is the most busy beach in the east coast and was called "Little Bali" due to the many western tourist stayed here. Bikinis girls are everywhere, bar and club always full at night. Started 2001 the number of tourists were declined...and no effective promotions were taken by the state authority.

Yeayy you finally visit the East Coast (my hometown). The coastal road from where you stayed all the way to Kuala Trengganu is scenic. Btw, there are nicer furnished units in Timur Bay better than the one you stayed in as I have stayed in a modern hotel like unit with 2 proper bedrooms. There are many 3 to 5 star hotels in town as well as along the Beserah Cherating routes. There are many delicious trendy bistro/cafes coffee outlets too. Hope you will repeat a holiday in east coast again.❤

Hi Taylor..thanks for taking us along. Been some time since I've been to Kuantan. I skip it for Cherating during surfing season. Btw there's a nice cafe run by a French lady and her local husband there. They have the best creme brule and desserts ever...always a queue when it opens. It's called Cafe Marion. Ombok, where you were, serves good meals too. It's also a surfing school. Surfing season is where it gets really busy in Cherating, usually during the monsoon season. Anyways, always fun to be on your travels too...stay safe always. Cheers

Hi Andrew. U r in my home state, Pahang! In case u r not aware, Pahang rivers tend to hav real crocodiles(not alligators!!)esp. in d longest river in Peninsular Malaysia, d Sungai Pahang. By d way, Pahang is d biggest state in Peninsular Malaysia. To u Pahang is under develop, but to me, it has developed to such an extent dat I deplore d beautiful jungle, and beaches being invaded by hotels, restaurants, etc. D road to Kuantan is a whole lot more picturesque if u take d old trunk winding road! In my mind, I still hav beautiful memories of dat trunk road, as well as old trunk road to Kuala Terengganu! U shld try them, but b prepared for'undeveloped' environment! Like no RNR stops.
