3 DIY wood projects that anyone can do! This video shows how to make three easy woodworking projects.
(1) A Piet Mondrian inspired clock
(2) A coat, hat & scarf rack
(3) A key holder.
They are easy to make and a good way to practice marking and cutting wood accurately. You only need a little amount of wood for all three builds and very limited tools. All 3 are easily customizable and can be adapted for your own design ideas. You can find most of the sizes below but not all as I believe part of the learning process is being able to judge sizes and scales and the best way to learn is to make a few mistakes!!
The Piet Mondrian inspired clock is simply all butt joints. There are a good few connecting parts so its an ideal way to test and practice your marking and cutting skills. The abstract colors really make the clock stand out. When gluing it together I used regular wood glue (for strength) and some fast acting activator glue to speed up the gluing process.
Tip!! When purchasing the clock mechanism make sure the spindle is long enough to go through the thickness of wood you are using!
YELLOW section: 10 inches x 5 inches (255mm x 128mm)
BLUE section: 10 inches x 2 inches (255mm x 50mm)
RED section: 5 inches x 2.5 inches (128mm x 65mm)

The coat, hat and scarf is probably the easiest of the three to make. Again its just some straight cuts and all screwed together. The bright colors again make it stand out, which I think adds to the piece. The hardware is just regular hooks which can be picked up at your local DIY store.
Two horizontal pieces (white) 22 inches (560mm) long
Four vertical pieces 26 inches (660mm) long
The house shaped Key holder is a nice way to store your keys. I wanted to show how to glue up some pieces of wood without any clamps in case people don't have any. All you need is some scrap pieces of wood and some wedges. Its a super easy way to do glue ups on small pieces of wood. I left the pitch of the roof at 45 degrees so it would be easier to do the miter joint on the top. To add the writing I printed the word home (font of your choosing) on regular paper and then transferred the outline of the letters to the wood with carbon copy paper and simply filled between the lines with paint. The white part of the house 10 inches (255mm) wide by 12 inches (305mm) high.
I really hope you enjoy making one or all of these projects and that it helps you get started, or improves your woodworking skills. When learning or practicing I think it's nice to have a finished product that you can say you made and maybe it may inspire you to make more things! 😊
