Some thing ive been meaning to ask is whats your thoughts on all this spotify stuff recently with getting caught in bot playlists and artist getting removed, seems to be linked to the playlist wheel spin..
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 2 ай бұрын
Yeah I have one eye on it. It seems to be a tunecore problem more than a Spotify problem as far as I know. They claimed Spotify provided the data on these 'fake plays' ,but never provided any evidence. As a purely 'organic' artist myself who never pays for promotion I'm worried but I haven't been affected. We have already been questioned by distributors a long time ago about our success as given how unknown I am some of my numbers looked too good to be true. But we just told them to look at the data, it's clear to see my plays all come from users own playlists, and spotify's own algorithmic choices. they backed off when they saw that, and we've been fine ever since. We've always used Distrokid and Ditto.

@@Bthelick I have also moved the goalposts for monetisation you have to have every track get at least 1000 plays before any monetisation
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 2 ай бұрын
@RewindRich yeah I'm not too worried about that side. If music is your living then it's actually not a factor. 1k plays is 4$ a YEAR!! so if you can't hit 1k plays in a year then it's not a living is it. You need to be hitting 100k plays per month before it even starts to become a career possiblity. And if you have a couple of tracks that manage that then the rest is negligible. And the rate goes up slightly for those that do earn. I can speak more than most as I have hundreds of tracks out in the world , Even if 100 of them couldn't reach 1k plays then same argument a) that's still only $400a year, and b) is it really a career if $400 a year is the difference maker? I don't see it as a greedy play honestly. Most artists on their servers aren't making a living, or even making back server costs probably! 85% of profiles on Spotify don't have more than 50 followers, and some of the rest were earning via non-music like "10 hrs of pink noise to help dogs sleep" style tracks. I totally see why they did it.
@onairrecordings
@onairrecordings 2 ай бұрын
@@Bthelick i heard the change was that if one of your tracks doesn’t meet 1000 plays then none of your tracks will be monetised, guess if it doesnt get 1000 then there must be something wrong and you need a new hobby 🤣🤣.

Before proceeding further, I believe the main difference is the swing, to be exact: first one seems to be just 1/8 notes, the second one are 1/16 notes but without much swing and the last one is swinging a lot.

Hey question: So do you figure out the chords that your sample is playing first? For example in your advanced uk garage sampling video you get the sample into a 6 5 1 harmonic minor then you would write the bassline follwing those chords?
@itskittens
@itskittens 2 ай бұрын
oh nvm I think this is answered at part 4:43 in the video
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 2 ай бұрын
Yes you'll need to know the chords , well I say that, there's no rules really. If it sounds good then all fine. If you haven't developed the relative pitch recognition yet then just playing a bass along with small sections of the sample until each section seems to fit will get you close enough. Obviously it's just far quicker if you know. I only wanted a 651 specifically in that vid so I could emulate the Virgi vibe, it's not a requirement for garage in general.

Yes, presumably because it came out of house first, before it merged with bass music / sound system etc. The modern stuff like Virji seems to be a nice mix of the 2 I think.

There's also difference between 4x4 and 2 step bass lines. I would argue that modern 4x4 bass lines like Sammy draw a lot from 2 step. E.g. Listen to the classical anthem "moving too fast" by Artful Dodger and Romina Johnson.

I'll certainly try! It's not like they aren't related! (Well, jungle is) You'll have to let me know who/what specifically, OG UK dnb or American sub focus vibes etc? as with any genre it's a broad spectrum. (I covered it a lil bit in the "how to drop video" btw)

@@Bthelick True, if I had to pick a specific sub genre of drum and bass that I personally would like to see deconstructed, I would say the two candidates for starters would be Break Feat. MC Fats & Cleveland Watkiss - We Are The People, because I'm interested in how they layer their drums and it features melodic elements as well as solid bass parts, and another example would be Andy Skopes, Madcap & Singing Fats - Trouble ( Dub Mix )

I forgot to take the transient processing off it , amongst over things it's probably too pokey or in too higher key as is.

Sup Bthelick!! The last few days I've been delving a lot into the garage tutorials you made and they've inspired me a lot and helped me a lot, but I still feel like I'm having a really hard time creating new chord ideas. Not that I haven't learned about 7 chords and 9 chords, sound structure, but I feel like it's been difficult to come up with the idea, put it on paper and develop it. I have the impression that there are no Pads, or that there is space left on the tracks. Any ideas on how to get past this? Btw, thanks a lot for your tutorials, thanks to u I finished a track, still isn't quite I wanted to but its a progress! Peace

if you can't create a good bass line on your own, you need to listen to more music. Bass lines should enter your brain in less than 5 seconds if you've done enough studying. If you're a budding producer, you would serve yourself so much better by just listening to your favorite music, and playing back the notes on a keyboard. A video can spark inspiration, but learning happens at the desk, not on your phone. (for beginners)
@G8tr1522
@G8tr1522 Ай бұрын
veteran producers ofc should be watching these vids to break their habits and get new ideas. I'm just issuing a PSA for a newbies: PLAY YOUR PIANO. You don't have to learn scales and chords and all that (but it helps). Just learn how to play your favorite melody, your favorite vocal lines, _learn to play your favorite bass lines_ and you will learn so much more than you could by watching this video.
