Try these things when your mix just isn't working. Sometimes we don't know what we don't know.
But these few things can make almost any mix better pretty quickly. These are meant to be introductions to topics especially if you're new to mixing. but these few things can certainly help any mix.
Filtering, Space, and Saturation the main things can change how your mix feels, hits, and vibes.
Filtering - using high pass and low pass filters to unmask, declutter, and make room for other mix elements.
Space- using things like panning, reverbs, or delays, to either push things back or pull them forward in a mix. Chorus or modulation comes into play here. Anything to manipulate how mix elements sit spatially.
Saturation - This can be a rabbit hole for sure. At its core... saturation is turning up the temperature on your mix. Most affordable interfaces are sonically transparent... BORING. We need saturation to add color and excitement to an otherwise BLAND sound.

Saturation is the secret weapon. Not only does it add a character that is pleasing to the sound (when applied properly) it also helps add perceived loudness!!

Yes! And it’s one of the only tools that can incorporate characteristics of the others. Saturation can seemingly make EQ changes. As well as dynamic range alluding to compression. Super cool!

You are really good at this. One of the first things I learned from an in the know friend decades ago, was masking. How it is your enemy in your recordings. I’ve heard so much reverb I often don’t even notice it anymore. Not good! Saturation. Well my very first studio electric guitar track was done by running my guitar into a mic input on a cassette deck and cranking the gain while putting the mic up against the headphone speaker. It worked great! You just never know... Creativity is the Magic button for everything everywhere at any time. Nicely done once again! Keep doing these, cuz the universe will not let you go unrewarded....

I love that you demonstrated each effect as you said the name of it, which is especially helpful for people who are new to mixing or not fully acquainted with the terminology yet. In my experience, it’s really important to have these various effects more or less internalized; if you’re familiar with the sound and the impact of these basic effects, you can more intentionally and deliberately sculpt the sounds in your mix to create a cohesive whole. It’s so much fun exploring all these plugins and discovering the differences between them all-they work together to create exciting ear candy for the listener! That’s what helps keep people engaged with the music 🎶 Thank you for making this video-it’s a great resource, and you present things in a very clear, tangible way!

Thanks man! I appreciate that. I didn’t want to get into a typical mix example with these things... but rather just ingrain the ideas and plant that seed. Sometime people take mix examples too literally... I hope it comes off like that.

I'd say people like buying vinyl nowadays because it's more special than having it as a saved album on Spotify. It's a physical thing. I think that's one of the main reasons people buy vinyl but hey it's my gut telling me. I'm sure a lot of them think they sound better, that the vinyl sprinkles some magic on the production or something. Which is true often, as you mentioned there's the distortion and saturation that cutters and pick ups introduce. Oh and a lot of those vinyl masters have no or much gentler limiting on them so they often have more dynamics, which can be more pleasing (depending on the genre...).

Great explanation and method of delivering advice. Explaining the fundamental improvements made by the technique is was more useful than just showing a saturation plugin. Maybe another video on each subject could be great too, but love this principles style video.

Great advice! I often try to get most of the sound I'm after on the way in, but I've become so obsessed with this I think I become hesitant to alter things much. Taking some chances really does improve the listening experience for the 99% of people that won't notice or care how much effort you put into recording a perfect sound. You have to realize you're mixing for other people, not your own sense of self-worth. Awesome video!

Yes! Same! It always starts with the source tone... That in my mind is like the foundation. But when taking a step back, later in the process, you have to be willing to bend tracks to suit the song. That said the intent is never to change someone's creative vision... but use those tools to enhance it. (hope I said that in a way that makes sense!)

Love everything but the background "Music for your video!". I feel like you are testing a lens in a B-Roll. A cool loop from one of your songs would work better! Amazing tips that used to take time to learn, condensed in little more than 10 minutes. Guys, write everything down!! As for the production and image quality (grading, lightning, etc): Top notch!

Awesome dude! Do you think you can achieve a good organinc sound RECORDING in the box? Cause we all know mix in the box is perfectly fine as long you got a decent recording, but that's not exactly a reality in budget home studios. In my case, I like my mixes using drum samples and amp sims, but think it could be more depth and organic. I just bought a cheap analog compressor and a console just for analog summing and see what happens. Thanks!

Hey man! First off, Yes. I do think you can. Too many records have been made in home studios and gone on to change the landscape of popular music as we knot it for it not to be possible. I think most of the time we overlook the easiest solutions to our problems. What can be difficult in a home studio is your listening environment. There’s nothing you can change that will affect your mixes more than the ability to actually hear them accurately. That’s dope you are expanding your gear setup. But don’t look for those things to change anything drastically. When I’ve noticed huge leaps in my own mixes. It’s been through room correction and tuning, and a converter upgrade. And that second one isn’t really cost effective for a home studio. Buuuuut. I’m still a gear nerd..... so... What compressor and board did you pick up? Take it easy man!

@@RecordingStudioLoser Hi man! Yes, it's funny how we all think we need more gear to get a great sound and sometimes, we buy it, and a few months later, we understand that was just a matter of knowledge or practice. I definitely don't wanna go that way, specially 'cause I'm from Brazil where things are ridiculous expensive by now. My setup by now is a Jackson/EMG+Epihone Les Paul+Yamaha Bass+Midi Controller+Focusrite Scarlet Solo+Reaper! So I'm just acquiring used gear, like an Alesis 3630 and a Behringer Xenyx 802 from my brother for free. Real cheap stuff. I also have an old Sony Tape Machine stored back home waiting for restore. Thanks again man!

One thing I have been noticing in music being produced at home is everything is way to clean. Way to Clear. I find this a major problem when people start using GGD and OKW for their drums without separating the track and mixing it form the bare bones. Take the time to mix it. IF you start to clean then everything becomes to clean and everything sounds the same. Do the weird and try something different. Loved the video.

Thanks for the videos. I feel like the biggest thing I'm struggling with is the tone of my kick drum. It just sounds like a basketball and lacks the low end and punch that I enjoy in some of my favorite bands. When I compare my mixes to reference tracks, the overall mix just sounds dull and narrow. It's so frustrating and disappointing.

@@RecordingStudioLoser Hello! So I have a 22" kick and I use a D112 (in), Bluebird (out) and a Solomon sub. I've made sure to check the phase and nudged the kick out and sub to be in phase with my kick in. My reference is a song called Gods of American Success by John Mark Mcmillan. Here's a link to my first mix. www.dropbox.com/s/qa8bkixwnr6vqzw/A%20Mild%20Wildfire%20Mix%201.wav?dl=0

Loser, I like when you talk music to me. I'm so sick of the "perfect" and "technically correct" side of music. Like I said in my other comment. Make some damned music already. I cringed having to put out some of my music just a bit ago with mistakes and all, but I had to get over my perfectionism and procrastination. Just make some music y'all, and learn with your ears, not your eyes. Welcome and enjoy!...SBN
