3 Essential Effects Every DJ Needs To Know

Back in the days of vinyl, a DJ would have to add another piece of hardware outside of the normal two turntables and mixer in order to add effects to their set-up. Now, every DJ app on the market comes with a plethora of effects that can be used in a simple press of a button or click of the mouse.
Using different effects can add creativity to your set, and every DJ has their favourites; but it’s good to learn the ins and outs of a couple of essential effects which can be used in different situations.

I play a lot of happy and UK Hardcore, so I tend to use the flanger and phaser a lot to highlight buildups before big drops.

I definitely relate with the part about how djs used to have to plug in an outside source for effects. I just started deejaying with a controller the past three years after deejaying with vinyl and turntables for 30 something . I found this useful seeing that I'm new to controllers, serato and all. When i started, the low cut echo was by far my favorite in RekordBox. But than I discovered a while ago that with delay and reverb combined can mimic an echo effect with more subtle control to the sound.

I have every FX Pack Serato had to offer (5 in total, counting the default FX pack), but my main 3 effects that I save in my slots are (in respective order): Twist Echo, Epic Reverb, and Flanger.

I use the eco to transition with eco out. I also use the noise effect to add texture to a song while also using the fader to create waves and make transitions smoother.

reverb i use a lot. i tap my foot four times then throw in the next track, but you tap the beat from the ending track, not the one you are about to drop. you can also use the screen to let you know when the beat should in as well

Hi Marc, You have been using the Mixars Primo in a few of your recent video's. How do you find that controller? It's just dropped to around £400 in the UK. I have been tempted by it, especially because of the sound colour effects on each channel, and separate AUX input on the front. How is the build and sound quality? Cheers

Hi there, cool video by the way. I do have question. I noticed you were using the mixars Primo dj controller in the video. I wanted to ask, How do you like it compared to other small dj controllers out there? Does it work well with serato dj pro? How is the soundcard, is it strong? Also do you use the primo at your gigs or just at home? And how much is the primo?

THIS is WHY we djs do a hole LOT more than just push play! U can make 2 sets sound the same or very different wirh just these effects imagine what lil tricks the best in the world do! This is why I respect armin van buuren every yr he makes the best trance yr mix comes out next week or Christmas or Nye lol 1 of those.

I'd personally not use much in the way of effects when playing salsa but there is no hard and fast rules about this stuff, experiment and see what sounds good to you!

Hi, i feel slow and behind , havent mixed for 3 years. Hardly have hours behind me also , formey only a bedroom dj with 2 public gigs. I dont use software or laptop , is this a problem? I only use straight forward pioneer djm mixer and cdj cd players

In this video yes but in many no - hot cues, loops etc are used extensively and you need modern digital DJ gear to make use of them

The three you mentioned are the ones I use most often. Using the reverb the least out of the three because it gets annoying to the dancers. Also when it comes to echo I tend to cut out the low in frequency so mid and highs are the frequencies are the ones being effected.

Pioneers filter is so junk. Gotta crank down the mids when filter sweeping or it sounds so harsh.

@@bhaveshkhatri1481 Was just about to reply the same. @MMMGrower, go into the utility settings for your mixer and reduce the parameter for the filter. For my S9, the default was 10(max). I set it to about 6 or 7 and it's much better.
