3 Forgotten Muscle Cars That Could Smoke Modern Supercars!
First up, the 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 L78. This car was all about speed and power, perfect for young drivers back then. It had a powerful engine rated at 375 horsepower, though it was originally said to have 425 horsepower. The L78 was easy to spot with its unique hood, wide stripes, and Super Sport badges. It was built for drag racing with advanced suspension and tough transmissions, making it one of the fastest cars you could buy in 1969.
Next, we have the 1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst. This car mixed muscle car power with luxury car comfort, which was pretty rare back then. Built with Hurst Performance, it featured a powerful 440 cubic inch V8 engine that made 375 horsepower. The car stood out with its Spinnaker White and Satin Tan colors, fiberglass hood, and trunk lid. Inside, it was fancy with leather seats and power windows. Only 485 of these were made, making it a rare find today.
Lastly, the 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II was built for NASCAR racing. This car had a special design with a long, smooth front to cut through the air. It came with a strong 351 cubic inch V8 engine making 290 horsepower, and some even had the more powerful Boss 429 engine. The Cyclone Spoiler II was available in two styles: the Dan Gurney Special in white and blue, and the Cale Yarborough Special in red and white. It's a rare car, with only a few hundred ever made.
These cars were all about speed, power, and unique designs. They played a big part in car racing history and are still loved by car enthusiasts today. Buckle up and enjoy the ride as we explore these incredible muscle cars!

The L78 cars had no special trim. If you chose any of the three 396 engines in the SS396 package the exterior trim was the same. To find out which engine it was you had to open the hood and the hp was on the air cleaner.

L78 had solid lifters and therefore had a noisier valve train sound. Also more duration and compression.

I love the older muscle cars , I had a few . I was at a car show (Carlisle) a week ago and truly loved the cars from the mid ‘60’s to the early ‘70’s . They couldn’t come close to the car I own today ! It wasn’t outrageously expensive , under $69K , and has 717 hp . A Dodge Challenger Hellcat Jailbreak in Plum Crazy purple . I’m an old ‘Cuda guy but this is as close as I’ll be able to get with any real muscle for the money . And it has plenty ! I’m still amazed at how strong this car runs ! In fact , I gotta go .

Had a 1969 SS 396 Chevelle in 1975, 400 turbo tranny and was never beaten in street drags, never did take it to the drag strip, but it would pin you in the seat under acceleration. Also couldn't tell which needle moved the fastest under acceleration, the speedometer hand or the fuel gauge hand. The only car I still wished I had.

The monster engines of the day had the capability. But not a single car had the transmission, and traction control necessary to compete with today's cars. So much was lost from the flywheel to the the tires. In comparison.

A lot of those performance cars from the 60s had potential but we’re handicapped by lousy tires, suspensions, and exhaust to name a few. Still, considering the performance capabilities and power ratings of modern iron, the modern cars are faster. Just don’t necessarily do it with style.

@@georgegrill3262 So back in 68 any Schmoe off the street can walk in and buy a 700-800hp monster with a warranty, and they're selling them right next to the 4dr sedans and the public is buying them like hotcakes? That never happened. You needed to know someone to get your hands on a hemi dart. Yeah that was the musclecar era, but the average hp numbers dont even conpare to today. As much as i hate the amount of plastic they use in modern retro, these days are truly the glory days of horsepower.

Lots of muscle cars far more forgotten than the SS396. Should have included something actually obscure, like the AMC Hurst Rambler or AMX, or a Studebaker Avanti or Hawk. That said, KZfaqrs often make things controversial on purpose to increase engagement for the algos.

I grew up in the muscle car era and drove a wide variety of these. Owned GTOs, my brother had a 68 Camaro, Torino, and others. My best friends had Cudas, Super Bees 440 six pack, Firebird, Boss 429, Chargers, etc etc. None of these can run with my 2007 BMW M6 e64 Dinan, and it isn't considered a super car, but will run 212 mph and stop like a chute was opened.

@terryoquinn8199 That's funny, but the point is these old cars can't cut the mustard against modern cars that are designed to perform. At this point in my life, I don't race. I enjoy the sound, handling, and feel, but I avoid the behaviors that cost me ridiculous penalties and expenses. As the testosterone level falls and life experiences rise, the desire for "Hey, y'all watch this!" goes away. Enjoy your youth, and I pray you survive it.

The 71' Montego as far as I can tell, has the most super speedway wins of any true production car. David Pearson won about 15 super speedway races from 72' - 73' in the Wood's Bros. 71 Montego.. The 1972 second race of the year at Talladega featured 10 71 Montegos, one won the race. That being said, there may have been two Wood's brothers #21 71' Montegos. They may have been built on an older Ford frame, from a late 60's model Ford. Only one is known to exist today. Money was tight back then, so damaged race cars were sometimes rebuilt from cars bought off the street.

Stock for stock the 69 351W 4V was quicker stoplight to stoplight than a 70 351C, but any distance greater than that and the Cleveland would blow past. The high compression, small valve 351W made it's power right off the line

JIm Wyman raced in Omaha at Sunset Speedway and in the track at Harlan Iowa. He was a Ford dealer, and a big 351 Cleveland guy. He raced a 68 and later a 70 Torino, both with 351 C.s, Then he started driving a 71 Mustang with a 351 Cleveland. His cars were always white with green numbers, #14. He won 6 consecutive races in Harlan with the 351 Mustang.

Gabrielback; you obviously don't know what your talking about, I could take a 1970 hemi cuda and give it slicks, electronic ignition, and a tune and make a pussy out of any hellcat that is supercharged. Don't believe me there is a green 70 cuda here on the tube who does it often. Also there is a 1964 car called a thunderbolt that ran 11's in 1964, also check out dragboss who runs a 351cleaveland Cougar that turns 9sec 1/4 mile. Yes because of modern computer controlled cars they are obviously faster than most older cars. But thats the only reason. You take an older car and give it modern tires and a tune you will discover that newer cars are not as fast as u think. Plus older cars look better. Myself knew of a 289 powered Fairlane at Detroit dragway in the 70's that turned 125mph trap speeds. Then there was gto, buick gs cars that you can witness destroy the latest and fastest modern cars, not to mention many 427 chevys I know of. I could list em all day but it doesn't matter because I know fact over fiction. 😂

@top.intel0 I was referring to your statement about modern cars I explained everything in my post. As an avid Drag racer and Mechanic; for every new car you believe is fast I know an older one that's faster unless of course it's a modern nitro car, they are insane 340mph+ in 1000ft. They used to run 1320ft but they were exploding too much. If you have never been to a nitro event you should treat yourself. You will never forget it. As you can see I don't care much for modern cars they absolutely suck to work on 😝🤣

Ridiculous. And which of them could handle or brake with anything close to the capabilities of, say.....a base Honda Civic of today? NONE. ABSOLUTELY NONE. These sleds are useless for anything but going fast in a straight line for very short distances. And hopefully not have anything at the end that required short stops.

Any and all Chevelles made were NOT rare. The whole point of Chevrolet to make cookie cutter cars and they did exactly that. If you wanted a genuinely rare and FAST car, 68 LO23 Dart and BO29 Cuda both with hemis and well less than 100 of each made. These were the race hemi and not street hemi with either of these being able to keep up with modern Demon170s No other car you had mentioned could do that.
