You dont have to bleach if you're going darker! I dyed my hair red (i also have natural dark brown hair) and it showed up good! I think its hard to go lighter once you dye them black tho, so i wouldnt reccommend it unless you'll keep it for a long time and are willing to let it grow back out your natural color or to bleach them afterwards!
