I like how this applies to much more than melee, even than only gaming. That's some really good advice too, great stuff !

I always struggled a lot with the C.Falcon matchup as a Marth main until i myself started to play Falcon a few weeks ago, which, just as you said, helped me not only to get better at the matchup, but to keep the game fresh and interesting in a time where it was starting to feel a little monotonous for me. I am definitely looking forward to put all this tips in practice! Thanks for always doing this great videos PPMD! Also, Sorry for my bad english. This is not my first language.

Your English is literally perfect, dude. I just got done peer reviewing capstone reports (high level senior college reports related to your major) and you have way better grammar than they do. Would have had no clue you’re not a native English writer. Also glad to here it livened up the game for you :)

Concerning the first point of playing my opponents character. Lets say that I play marth and struggle with technical, rushdown falcos. I can try playing falco against marth, but my falco techskill is so bad that I will lose to options that wouldn't work if my techskill was as good as the people I am playing that give me trouble(such as shield grab for example). Is it worth it to invest time into getting my other characters to a level of technical proficiency that I can do the options that I lose to on marth or would that time be better spent just practicing more marth? Hopefully this makes sense, Thanks PP.

Personally play falco so you can feel falco maybe even after youve been tilted. Play the scummiest version of falco. Otherwise stay on that main
@xlilsasuke4x

The whole idea is not to become proficient in someone else’s character but to see an opponents character, the position they are in and have a good understanding of what they want to do and what they are looking for.
@douwemusic
@douwemusic 2 жыл бұрын
EDIT: You can reduce the time you invest in the other character by only practicing specifically what makes you lose to that character! But besides that: I think it's worth putting in time to learn another character's tech skill. First of all, it will improve your tech skill for the whole cast. To give some examples: Like PP said, getting Marth movement down helps your movement skills in general. In your case, Falco is more reliant on intense tech skill than Marth and learning this will help your overall gameplay. For example, Falco has stricter L-cancel timings because he is a fastfaller, which will help you get more consistent L-cancelling on Marth. It also helps that you won't only rely only on muscle memory for the cancel timings. Falco generally has way smaller hitboxes so you will get better at precise spacing. It will help with smaller dash dancing and learning good wavedash spots since these are more important on Falco. And then there's all the benefits PP listed that come with actually knowing what your opponent's character wants to achieve, their options and where they are strong or weak. It's hard work, but I think it's definitely worth your time to do some intense training on characters that are not your main! In my case, practicing some Peach tech and neutral has really helped me improve in the matchup as Marth because suddenly I would recognise tough spots for her, see her coverage options etc. (though this was less tech skill related than practicing e.g. Falco or Fox)

Play more melee, get better tech skill, then learn the matchups
@davidkociak5242
@davidkociak5242 2 жыл бұрын
I think being comfortable with consistent tech skill across the whole cast just will take time, focus on solo practicing with marth and eventually you’ll understand system wide mechanics well enough to practice other characters for matchup knowledge.

PP, your comment about explaining it out loud is similar to the "Rubber Duck Method" that programmers use- keep a rubber duck on hand to explain coding things to, so you might figure out your problem while explaining it all out. I might decide that mine plays melee now.

1st tip is already different from everything I've heard. I never would've thought to do that, but my ego gets in the way of me doing that. I add an unnecessary layer of stress to playing a game I love. I actually took a break to play other games JUST with the purpose of having fun IN MIND because I get too competitive in Smash.

Hey everyone I want to play melee, but every time I practice, it hurts my left index finger. That's the finger I use to wavedash and L-cancel, unmodified controller. Do I need to mod my controller to prevent this, or am I just doing it wrong?
@firstlast-wg2on
@firstlast-wg2on 2 жыл бұрын
If it’s actual pain maybe figure out an alternate like a box controller, but if you are simply just experiencing fatigue keep practicing cause your hands will get stronger and have better endurance. Maybe check out some hand exercises to practice long-term.
