I’ve tried so many times to replicate my Mom’s biscuits. I’ve made some that weren’t bad, but they also weren’t hers. Flour, lard, buttermilk. She never measured, but it always made exactly 12 biscuits that fit perfectly in her biscuit pan. She was taught at the age of 5 and that was her job in my grandma’s kitchen when she was growing up. I sure do miss my mom.

My 3 year old granddaughter and I made this biscuit recipe. They were the best I’ve ever had. More so, I wanted to share with you something special in my heart. God has truly blessed us with your mission field. My granddaughter has a rare neurological speech disorder. She has minimal verbal communication, and attends four therapy sessions per week. Her disorder affects her ability to eat, and even smile. She uses a speech device to help her communicate. She will never recover from this disorder and will need lifelong therapy. She has absolutely fallen in love with your videos. We have been cooking together, and this special time allows me to work with her speech homework while she learns how to cook. She has been learning more sounds, and putting them together. The most special blessing is watching her smile. Your ministry has a far reach. Thank you! God has a beautiful purpose and plan for my granddaughter’s life. We can’t wait to discover what He has planned for her. You are a beautiful, Godly example of trusting God to navigate us through our journey. I pray God continues to bless you, and your family.

"I don't know any old women who do that" is classic. Keep tradition alive. Tradition is the things that work. And let me say, Becky, that the last biscuit (which I call the "runt") can be stuffed into your cookie cutter or whatever and made into the same shape as the earlier ones and you don't need to do your excellent job of shaping it perfectly while saying you can't :-)

My mother used to talk about how her mother made fresh biscuits every morning (mostly for their Dad), and she said that "Mom never used a measuring cup or spoons, just knew how much of each ingredient to add, by eye". They had one of those "Hoosier" cabinets that were common in kitchens back then. Where the upper cabinet had a door with a canister behind it, that you dumped your 25 lb. (or more?) bag of flour in, and under the cabinet, was a handle, that you cranked and put your bowl under, and the flour would dispense. She said her mom would give it a few turns, knowing just how much flour she needed for the biscuits. My grandfather had biscuits, eggs and bacon every morning for breakfast. They lived in SW PA, but both grandma and grandpap were from Tennessee.

This by far the best biscuit recipe I've ever seen. They are light, fluffy, and have a great flavor. If you don't have self rising flour, all purpose flour, three teaspoons of baking powder and a TSP of salt will do. I always wind up a biscuit shy (I'm a dough eater!).

My sister had two 8 cup bowls with lids. She wasn't strong enough to get the lids off, so she gave them to me, and I was so thankful. My mom cut the biscuits with a lemon can. There aren't lemon cans anymore, and the final scraps were made into a rough little biscuit that was "fought" over.

As a person who lost touch with her faith years ago, I am grateful to have found it again and I realise that the joy of cooking good food for my family is part of my faith and God’s Grace… and Becky, you are an exemplary example for every young woman who wants so much to just take care of her family and make a loving family home for them…Most young women feel the need to “ nest”…but current societal expectations and finances make this very difficult… If women chose to stay home and raise their own children, wages would go up, crime would go down and families would be able to afford to do so.
