To speak well, you need to just do it, with humility, not compare yourself, and make sure you pay attention to the language when you listen and read.

Wow Steve, thank you so much! The truth is, you're one of the polyglot I look up to the most. You have no idea how much you have helped me, especially when you said that "forgetting is an important part of the learning process". Once I heard that, I completely stopped panicking about forgetting my languages and I just did whatever I could to work on my languages. People who criticize your videos have no idea how much value-added content you are offering.

You've had an enormous impact on my life sir. All my life I'd been interested in language learning, but I just didn't know what to do. Now I'm learning at least an hour per day, loving every minute of it, learning more than I ever did before, and feeling like I finally get to enjoy this important part of who I am. Thank you for posting. You've touched a lot of lives.

I live in Japan, I'm from the U.S. My Japanese friend loves learning languages so he watches your videos often. He said your Japanese is good, the guy who left the mean comment is jealous. This video is good advice, I often need more confidence and humility. I think those factors are often overlooked when it comes to studying another language.

My daughter (42) messaged me this Christmas week asking, "Do you have an Amazon wish list and if so can you send me the link" and I wrote back "At this point in my life I have what I want and if I need it, I just buy it ... but any card from you that has the word "Dad" on it I would treasure above anything else I could buy or be given." So funny to hear Steve relate to this same thing at: 0:07. You'd have to probably be at that age in your life yourself to relate. And I enjoyed the video - love taking a break for lunch in the kitchen and setting up my iPhone to watch something, generally something coming out of the White House but today Steve's video popped up on the suggested screen list and I always enjoy Steve's video. Be humble, Don't compare, listen for the differences - got it lol :). I'm on Mandarin Chinese now (my 3rd Lifetime membership at LingQ after Italian and German) OMG - did I actually think in 2015 that German was "difficult?" LOL

A thing I have noticed on my last trip to france is that when I start a conversation with an uncertain phrase or with a mistake they imediately revert to english and it is hard to get them back to french after that no matter how good my french is. It is the first impression that makes the conversation. When I start out with a perfect sentence I can make any mistake I want, they will accept that I speak french. That is my latest insight. It might depend on the culture or of course and per individual though.

I remember when 6 months ago every test online gave me a result of level A2-B1 in English and now, after having watched lots of series and KZfaq videos in English with only English subtitles I understand anything I listen to in English, every test puts me at a B2-C1 level and English grammar is no more problem because it just comes out intuitively.

Hi Steve! You're a very inspiring person. Thanks for your energy and positive attitude to things. To my mind, learning languages is not a sport. Steve. Great advice, specially in the beginning of the video. I'm just 27 and in this point of life I do treasure people and moments rather than material things. Life is simple and we humans make it difficult by adding things which aren't "life" at all. I'm native Spanish speaker. And I managed to learn English and Turkish... But now I'm struggling with Japanese and Russian.. I guess it's because of my lack of confidence but your video is inspirational.

I figure b/c it's painful to listen to me speak in Spanish lol....I know my grammar needs work and I forget words. But I keep trying and making mistakes, some of them kind of embarrassing. :)
