3 Light Modifiers Compared - Reflector, Umbrella, and Soft Box

I came into the studio to shoot some test footage comparing three light set ups to see just how much difference there was between modifiers of basically the same size, placed at the same distance. It seems like something that might be useful to others, so here it is!
In this video I compare a 32" reflector, a 33" umbrella (with and without diffusion) and a 34" Beauty Dish style soft box. For these tests, all of the camera settings and placement of the modifiers remains the same. The only thing I've changed is to the intensity of the light output - adjusting it to maintain a consistent exposure on the subject. I hope this is helpful.

I'm always surprised that people don't talk more about distance and placement. It seems like we talk about light fixtures and gear but not the practical things. I think distance plays a really big role.

Thanks Eduardo. This was fun. I really thought I'd get a wider range of results and didn't think that I'd see such a wide range of power needed. I think I'm going to do more tests with the reflector. I'm curious to see if the distance of the light from the modifier makes a big difference in power/spill. Thanks for watching!

Ha, I just realized that you posted this on MY video. When I saw the notification, I thought it was a reply to my comment on your book-light vid. I shot some stuff this past weekend with the diffused umbrella and was not pleased. Small lights just always look 'sourcey', there's no way around it. So I ordered a couple of those 3" baby-pin clamps and I'm going to compare what I did with the one stand book-light. I just hate how much you have to flag the light to get the ratios right. Hi, I have a question : Is the lighting of softbox almost the same with umbrella covered with diffuser ?

A softbox will give you more control over the light. The diffused umbrella tends to spread light out more. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.

1:42 interesting that the diffusion cloth on the umbrella doesn't do very much. I was surprised that the power didn't have to be as high versus the reflector. Does the umbrella have the black back cover on it? I don't see any light on the ceiling behind it. I like how you compared lights of all the same size and at the same distance. Thanks for controlling that. I was a little surprised how hard the reflector was. I guess it is hot-spotting, but it doesn't really look like it at 0:54 It doesn't seem like that there's very much background spill even with the umbrella. Have you tried using the Umbrella in shoot-through configuration? I like the guitar test also

Thanks for the comments. The reflector and the non-diffused umbrella have more specular highlights. The compression on the KZfaq footage hides some of that I'm afraid.

I bought my 90mm f/2.8 Macro off a dude in Anderson - met at the Arby's there at exit 27 I think. My mother-in-law used to live there. Nice town. I do hire PAs for smaller commercial jobs that I do. I'll keep you in mind for the future. Thanks for watching!
