We'll write down 3 short memos and try them out in practice. But first we'll learn a simple improvisation technique for the purpose; arpeggio and chromaticism. Then we'll find out that Music is so much more than just technique...
Learn more about the arpeggio technique in this lesson: • How to improvise an EA...
And learn more about chromaticism and other thrilling tricks we can do to jazz up our solo in this follow up lesson to the arpeggio lesson: • Easy TRICKS to JAZZ UP...
All NewJazz material is free, public and for everybody. No ‘pay walls’. But anyway; you are so much welcome to make a voluntary donation, to help keep me going, at either;

or

Many warm regards from Oliver Prehn

There are other ‘learn jazz’ channels, but Oliver takes his time to help you see what is going on. That makes a huge difference and makes this my favourite channel. Speed snd performance comes later. Thank you once again Oliver for a great lesson. 👏 👍🏻

I follow multiple piano jazz channels, and they all offer something a little bit different. For example Walk That Bass does a great job of breaking down the theory, Open Studio has a great jazz piano player in Peter Martin that you can emulate. NewJazz is very inspirational. Everytime I watch I feel inspired to learn!

It reminds me of the very first time I held a guitar in my hands. I was told actually to NOT do much and breathe from time to time. That valuable lesson always stayed in my mind, even though it was a word of advice far ahead for my knowledge back then. Thanks for putting this together Oliver! Your lessons are really a great help for free playing. Not depending on a piece or anything else. Just sit and let it come.

Thank you Oliver! Thanks to you I can learn what I want to do. Expressing the subconscious contents without any hurdles of the mind through music. And I do really feel happy when you mentioned the 4th note. We all now have the power to empty our minds, but the mind is like a pond, and no one can smooth rough water with an iron, we have to leave it alone, to let it settle itself And through meditation we can achieve a peaceful state of emptiness. Just simply close your eyes, sit in a comfortable position with your back straight, put your hands on your lap or interlock your hand. Now focus on your ears, let just aware of every sound that your hear, but don't name it. Yes, do not give them names, judging them, as if there is a wrong sound, or a right sound, they are all just sounds. Close your eyes and leave them be - just like leaving the pond settle itself. In another words, just let your ears hear whatever it wants to hear. And now when you can leave all of the sounds alone, focus on your breathing, in and out now slowly but consciously. Maybe breathing in beats. 1 2 3 4 in 1 2 3 4 out, and please don't rush yourself in higher bpm Do it everyday for 20 - 30 minutes a day. Start with 10 - 15 or even 5 minutes to see how you feel. I am really glad to see people showing love to New Jazz channel. And I wish through meditation we can all experience happiness and peace in the immediate moment. Best of luck

This is another awesome content Oliver!!! It's obvious you're not only a musician and fine tutor but a philosopher 😀 too 👏 . It's so true we tend to overthink our solos ( just to show off ) and not only that but the whole life itself, therefore this is a good life - lesson as well. Exactly the way you explained it, the beauty is in the balance in everything - thats the most difficult to achieve. Keep them coming !

Hi Oliver, thank you very much again for this nice, clear and joyful instruction. Love them every month!! Playing not only piano but also saxophone, for me playing a solo, I would name it working from a small theme, playing it in different ways while building up the variations, letting space, then coming into new melodies, but....... then back to the theme or phrase I started with, retaking it and going into it again. Recording and listening back myself from time to time helps me a lot to develop the skills on this joyful way to be in my musical world (and hopefully taking my audience with me into it 😊).

Thank you for the continuous inspiration. Your lessons prompted me to come back to music after 10 years break. The progress I made in the last year is unbelievable. And I started on 3 octave midi keyboard with very small and plastic keys. You made me believe again that everything is possible. I think having to much memos might complicate improvisation learning. After many experiments I have only one memo: LISTENING. If I wasn't sure I listen enough I play with my eyes closed. Of course, you mentioned about listening and evaluation. I would only add - listen to the sound and to the silence between sounds. Listen to your body, including fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, heart, lungs... Listen to your thoughts and notice - as soon you begin admire yourself and your amazing skills you stopped listening and music is gone leaving fortissimo notes and stiffed body. So listen even to your listening and when it stops make a brake and start to listen again 😂

Memo 1 As it relates to Dynamic, I tend to play very softly (as opposed to you) and I also need to work on accented different beats on each measure to change the volume shape of each bar. Memo 2 I need to remember to keep recording myself while playing. Memo 3 Practicing to lock with the beat. BTW, I am glad to be part of the five percent

Amazing and thanks Oliver. Just a question. Are you using hand grip concept that you use in previous lessons for fingering when appergiating??
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 3 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks a lot. No I don't use the hand grip method in this lesson. It's not super important how you do the piano fingering but try to avoid using the same finger twice in row - meaning that the fingers always 'change' from one note to the next note... Cheers from Oliver

Another memo could be "Lightness" in the sense, that the keys feel soft and easy to move (not press or chop!). This is not just correct fingering, it's a whole body thing, but also a mental one. Sometimes it's also a question of daily form, but one can improve even on a bad day. "Lightness" is a category only the musician himself "feels". It is better, to have a not too easy-going keyboard to practise this. How to make a hard going keyboard to a "light-weigh-subjective-feel" one. My improvisation gets always way better, wenn i "made the keys fleet-fooded". Maybe you know what i mean. Of course it's almost impossible to make a video about this... :-)
