In this Revit tutorial video I explore 3 methods to modeling wood decks in 3D! This tutorial was inspired by Angelo, who is a member of the BIM After Dark community. Angelo asked if anyone had "any tips or tricks for modeling decks to emulate the actually gaps and boards?"

It is cathartic to see someone who’s seemingly very experience with this software also having to just jimmy rig this kind of stuff together, and shrugging away the many shortfalls of every function in this software and brute forcing solutions left and right

Great video, and very timely as the next step on a current project is to build the deck! I usually use your first method, modeling it as a floor. On occasion I have used the dimensional lumber to model each board rotated 90 degrees, but rarely. I use LT so I can't do the beam system unfortunately. I love the curtain wall idea, I'm going to try that.

@@TheRevitKid That third option with the Roof by Footprint using Sloped Glazing worked great. Really quick to model (it was a simple design), just took a minute to work out the "mullion" sizing and the grid spacing for the deck boards. I will definitely be using this regularly now. Thank you!
@TheRevitKid
@TheRevitKid Жыл бұрын
@@JoshuaDStewart Cheers! Yes, you have to massage the mullions for your use... You may even want to make a different mullion type if you're going to use borders, etc...

I see you were focusing on decking, was going to say structural post and beams and beam systems for main structure and Simpson strong ties plug in for post anchors and ties Detailing directly from model, not sure if that’s the most efficient off course I tend to over model for better or for worse I do always have issues with decking at ends, will try curtain system next time Thank you as always great content

Agreed… I’m a big fan of “over modeling” in most cases… with enough interest maybe I will expand on this one and just do a video building an entire wood deck from scratch in Revit… seems like it would be valuable to many!

Old comment, but I've also found it handy to make one off families that work with my normal families when I find new structural components or when I have to schedule them. For example, I add hangers onto the stock dim. lumber families as a shared family that can be turned on or off per side. That modified stock lumber family is now added to a random rvt that holds all my structural conditions for future use. Almost all my posts have top and bottom caps as a generic feature too. It isnt over modeling if you get to copy and paste it to make money off it :) Keep Calm and Model On

I’ve used beam system for this, but hadn’t considered using slopped glazing family for this. This would be ideal for composite deck with curved pieces.

For me, i prefer using generic model and use array tool to make a timber wood deck. 'Cause i find it hard to manipulate that beam system specially on the edge part

Any thoughts on just modelling in place? Possibly quicker and would allow greater control perhaps.

It's easier for short term, if it's a sketch model that's fine, but you lose the ability to automatically revise a number/all of it by parameters and importantly - quantify by schedule.. Bottomline is it's no longer BIM 😁

When I modeled my wooden deck for my house, I did a structural beam system. I started thinking if it would be possible to add ‘Joints’ similar to Steel joints. But ‘wood joints’ such as L-shaped brackets or nails in the connections of the wood deck rafters. Any ideas? Maybe create a ‘steel beam’ that looks like Timber, and then create a ‘steel connection’ that looks like a L-shaped metal connection? :)

Simpson has some decent families out there … I’ll see what I can dig up and maybe make a full video on wood decks

Do you know if there is a way to apply and change materials when inserting an In -place mass that is from another program? I can only get it to show in default grey and don't have the material option available. I insert the model which is a 3D of a timber frame model by clicking in-place mass, then insert CAD and select dxf file
@TheRevitKid
@TheRevitKid Жыл бұрын
It all depends on the file type and source… but it can be done. Check out this live stream I did last year that touches on a few different file types and processes to modify the materials: kzfaq.infok7uj_XDnb6w?feature=share

In all but the first option the decking is embedded into the framing, not above it. I think you said that is an issue for using a beam system. Is that also an issue for curtain, or can that be raised up to sit on framing?
@TheRevitKid
@TheRevitKid Жыл бұрын
That is just simply because I did not offset either the beam system or the plank methods... its an easy fix for any of the methods... Either offset the 2x10 framing down lower or bring the floor/beam system/curtain wall higher... All three methods can have their offsets adjusted.

@@TheRevitKid was thinking of nested family where you would have two arrays: one for the structure (like the beam system) and one for the flooring

@TheRevitKid Жыл бұрын
@@samuelbras1 Quite honestly, that's a waste of time when you have tools like beam systems and curtain systems... plus, the performance of an array family like that would make is a DOG to use.
