3 Mics vs 1 Cherry Brown - Mic impact on sound tests

This is maybe a bit of a behind the scenes thing. This is one Cherry MX Brown being pressed in my hand as close to each mic as possible. This means right at the tip for the NTG5 and the ECM8000. This is a little bit of a distance away from the actual capsule but that's unavoidable.
Interface is Scarlet 2i2 3rd Gen, recording environment is an untreated and very loud Manhattan bedroom.
The ECM8000 seems to be the best for this particular application. The proximity effect on the non-omnidirectional mics should taper off at a reasonable distance, but for next-to-the-ear recordings, they are almost entirely unusable.
I'll be using the ECM8000 for sound tests until further notice

Yeah mic set up has a HUGE impact. Even just how the mic is mounted has an impact. For example, if your mic is on an arm without a shock mount, the vibrations of the keyboard go up through the arm and add extra bass. Putting the keyboard on a towel or something can get around that. Part of why soundtests don't mean a whole lot, anyone can make their keyboard sound good in a recording.

I use an nt1-a and usually manually remove the sub-bass from my recordings because desk vibrations still get to the mic a tiny bit even with a shock mount

interesting. To me, the first shotgun condenser seems to record the clearest details with the least amount of self-noise. the NT1-A is way too bassy. the ECM8000 has too much static/self-noise.

as a person who records sound tests with a condensor mic, i need to stop doing sound tests with a condensor mic. although i do try to make it sound most like real life.

I have the NTG and the NT1 both work great but the NTG seems to pickup a little extra of that background noise which could be bad or good for sound tests

Look at Keybored, his sound tests started sounding a lot better after getting a new mic.

kids, this is why you don't trust "thoccy" keyboards on youtube. they use dynamic plugins, eq, manipulate sound etc. on top of that, each room and mic combo changes how a switch would sound drastically. the dumbest way of recording by these keyboard enthusiasts is when they place the mic right on top of the keyboard as if that's how people hear things. do you extend you neck and get close to the keyboard with your ears when you type? no.
